Lucas McCain and his backstory are so interesting to me considering what we know we only get from a combination of episodes. More specifically is what we learn about him in EP18 S3, The Actress. After traveling all day Beth sits down with Lucas at the makeshift camp and talks to him about loneliness. Lucas says something along the lines of "I know how loneliness tastes and smells" followed by "it makes people do funny things sometimes. I'm not saying it's for certain but what if he had past issues with alcohol? The idea of and use of 'taste' and 'smell' when referring to loneliness are an interesting combination considering the feeling is usually amounts to more of something inside that has less to do with senses. We have seen it more than once where drunks come into town with some story about how they started drinking to diminish their issues. Its possible that Lucas even considers helping these people time after time not just because its out of the good in heart, but because he struggled with something similar. He talks in multiple episodes what a hole he found himself in after Margaret's death and how he struggled to keep himself going. He never says anything about what he uses to cope but some inferences can be made. In an episode where one of Margaret's old friends comes to visit North Fork she mentions how Lucas practically left with Mark under one arm and didn't bother saying goodbye to anyone. Was moving south from the Nations a new start to sober up and be a better version of himself? Later in The Actress Mark asks what Beth meant when she said Lucas 'had some human in him too'. Lucas explains that he, like anyone else, has flaws but Mark can't believe it. Mark was only 6 when his mother died and around 10 when he and Lucas moved to North Fork and it's entirely possible if Lucas had fallen into an alcoholic stupor after Margaret's death Mark simply wouldn't remember. He says himself in The Vision that his memories of his mother are fading as he gets older. Despite how important these are he has no control over forgetting so it's possible if something formerly happened with Lucas he would have little to no memory of it. What we see of Lucas as well with his relationship to alcohol is interesting as in some episodes the alcohol he does have is put away under the cabinet or if he steps into the saloon with Micah he is only having a little bit of a beer. Some of it might be directing choices but others it feels entirely conscious.
i absolutely love this interpretation, i never knew what he could have meant in that monologue especially "how (loneliness) tastes and how it smells." it also would totally recontextualize lucas's "tough love" and apparent anger towards micah pertaining to micah's alcoholism; he sees himself in micah
Well, I thought even more about this and have some more thoughts I want to spill out somewhere
In alcoholics anonymous, recovering alcoholics who are further along in their sobriety seek out and help other alcoholics who are new to aa/are earlier in their sobriety. It seriously helps them to stay sober themselves, gives them a newfound purpose and for many of them if they didn't help out other alcoholics they would be liable to relapse themselves.
I thought that could also be an interesting re-contextualization to explain why Lucas makes the effort he does to try to help Micah sober up the second they meet each other, it helps HIMSELF to stay sober
Lucas doesn't like his own name
LUCAS: Well maybe I oughta buy you another bottle first.
