Second trip to It’s Java!
I was so excited when I heard that there is a cute cafe in town that serves Indonesian food (I’m a sucker for anything to do with Indonesian food especially if it’s the one close to home). And one day I came across their post about Bebek Goreng Madura (Madurese fried duck).
It’s like my go-to every week I am back in Surabaya. So I went there to try it with my 2 Indo gals...they didn’t disappoint! It’s so tasty!
You can smell the deep-fried smell from afar just like how it is walking on some streets in Surabaya. Tahu isi, bebek goreng with fried tempe on the side, sambal and ice tea. The presentation is so classic with the Ayam Jago plates, Indonesian music and decor, Indonesian chatterboxes lol...omg, what more could I ask for!
So, it’s only fair to take my Kiwi boyfriend there for lunch today as he too fell in love with the duck when he visited Surabaya 2 years ago.
He enjoyed it! (though he sucks at picking on the duck flesh lol!!)
I definitely highly recommend this place for some authentic Indonesian cuisine that is different to your normal Indonesian food offerings around. Make sure to check out their bubur ayam, iga penyet, pecel, nasi rawon etc....and the lychee ice tea...some kopi aren too (that’s like....you better try everything on the menu pretty much😉)
Deliciousness of homemade tempe kecap (tempe with sweet soy sauce)...yay to healthy lunches!!! 😀 #homemade #tempe #vegetarian #kecapmanis #foodie #geniuseatingmachine https://www.instagram.com/p/B82ynqxhcVD/?igshid=61f8vb1hlzt9
Nasi Padang...a mixed of veges, meat, rice and sambal cooked in different ways, served as one! (I would say this might be one of my examples of ugly delicious :p)
Cooking Shows, It’s a Long One :P
I found myself liking to watch cooking shows since Masterchef Australia was booming. I didn’t follow it religiously at the start as the coverage in Indonesia was limited to cable tv (I think). So I saw the occasional replays then. Then there was the Indonesian version that I started watching, but I thought the judges was unnecessarily being brutal, so then I stopped watching it. Until I then moved to NZ and a few years later I watched Masterchef Australia season 9, 10 and 11 and some occasional MKR too haha.
I really enjoyed watching the competition and am often bamboozled and awed by how those contestants and the chefs came up with the dish. If you put me on the spot to think about a dish and give me a timeframe, I’ll definitely freeze and probably end up making scrambled egg! I’m not a great cook, I cook out of necessity lol.
I was sad to know that Masterchef Australia season 11 was the final season that the 3 musketeers judges (Matt, Gary and George) were judging. For the most part, I not only enjoyed watching the dishes being made, but I really liked the fun judges. They’re critical but not unnecessarily scream at the contestant as such. I just found that their comments are pretty constructive.
I then switch to Netflix (thank God for Netflix and for my bf for sharing his account haha!). I found the show Ugly Delicious by David Chang. Honestly I didn’t know who he is until I started watching that.
The thing that drew me into watching that is because I grew up Asian and most of our food look kinda ugly (well, not ugly, more messy I guess....not fine dining type of presentation), especially Nasi Campur. But man, the taste is super delicious! The food that he was tasting is pretty much our day to day food we find on the street, but I feel that many would take it for granted. You know, it’s pizza for example. But, I found that you can find beauty in those daily food you consume. It’s just amazing.
Whenever I see Dave’s reaction to the great tasting food, it was like “oh man, that’s so me!” moment. I can relate to it in so many levels. If you saw the food I eat when I’m back home in Indonesia, you’d probably think what the hell is that, but if you taste it, I think you’ll like it.
I once told my colleagues at work that I eat KFC wicked wings with rice and coleslaw. Some of them gave me such weird looks lol! Only my friend from the Phillipines understood since KFC original recipe etc is normally served with rice in our countries haha! (plus chilli sauce too in Indonesia). So, I dared one of my friends to try eating KFC with rice next time and tell me what he thinks of it.
I particularly loved his reaction eating fried chicken. I can’t help myself but salivate and wish that I was living somewhere in America with all access to any fried chicken I want. Though, living in Auckland with a big range of Korean fried chicken is a blessing too!
Cooking is just a different form of art to me. Be it the traditional one, the messy one, or the most precise, amazing fine dining ones. I don’t understand how they could come up with those ideas, but man...for those who don’t understand why you have to pay so much for such food, think of it as you’re eating a creation almost like you’re enjoying looking at Michelangelo’s painting, but this one you can see, smell, touch and taste.....utilising your senses to the max! Kudos to all these chefs working so hard in creating amazing pieces of art!
P.S. Here is my list of cooking shows, it’ll probably grow overtime so feel free to talk to me if you’re interested :) :

3rd anniversary dinner at Ebisu Saturday, 30th June 2018 was our third anniversary. That day, we were meant to be flying down to Palmerston North and was planning to then celebrate it there. But the Auckland fog got us stuck. Our flight was cancelled and rebooking was a nightmare. The blessing in disguise was that we got to celebrate it here in Auckland. We had done some research beforehand - was planning to do a late celebration after our trip down. We then decided to go to Ebisu. The reasons were: it is fancy (Britomart area), we love Japanese food, the food selection is great and it is very close to home (yippe...works best for a person who can’t walk on heels like me but wanting to wear them just to feel more special..still dunno what I was thinking as I still can’t walk on them lol). We started off with their special Sake accompanied by Edamame (Willem’s fav) and some vege tempura, then we had the beef short ribs and seared duck breast for the main and some shredded cabbage salad on the side (the beef short ribs were OMG!!! Sooo good and highly highly recommended!!). The cabbage salad was huuuuggeeee...make sure you’re hungry! It seemed like we ordered a lot, but I’m telling you it was nothing if you look at the selection..we were so indecisive as we would love to eat all of them (sounds greedy I know), but y’all should really try it. The vibe was so nice and homey. The service was great too 👍 Overall great experience ❤️
Long time due post, Sydney, 1-5 June 2018 This is the summary of my short trip to Sydney last June. The trip was intended for me and my bestie to shop and eat. It was literally filled with so much good food. We really made the most of it filling our bellies with Indonesian goodness that we missed so much and some that we could not find here in Auckland. Then followed by 3 days straight of shopping (mostly by me 😂😂😂). The food trip started of with our all time favourite, classic Chinese food (fried rice, braised tofu and soft shell crab). Followed by our Indonesian goodness and another favourite of ours, Korean food. Not forgetting the Australian specialty, seafood basket and chicken salad. Oh my, the salad was so tasty and fresh, and the seafood basket was great. I literally suggested us both to revisit the place I visited in February 2017 - Searok Grill at Circular Quay. And then some amazing ramen nearby and summed up with another Indonesian goodness - ayam tulang lunak (check out my Instagram @geniuseatingmachine for the locations of each dish). After all that guilty pleasure, of course we did some workout just to feel better, cause we’re good eh 😜 Overall, it was a much needed break and such a successful trip of our original intention of eat and shop (no fuss, stick to the plan - or no plan - just go with the flow). Wow was that worth it! 😍
