grace, starving: “i’m sorry rocky but i literally cannot bear to eat anymore of this chalky coma slurry stuff anymore. i think i’d rather starve.”

rocky, picking up the spoon in his hand: “grace want rocky do human-air-ship, question?”

grace just glares at him, rocky pretends not to notice as he does his best impression of an airplane as he pushes the spoon closer to grace’s mouth. that gets a smile out of grace as he begrudgingly lets rocky feed him. even though it still tastes horrible, this childish act somehow makes it better. rocky taking his airplane duty very seriously is rather funny to witness.

stupid stuff like this makes grace glad he’s making this trip to erid with rocky.

gracerocky can be the bestest friends in the whole universe who love each other in the most platonic sense possible and they can also be romantic partners who love each other soso bad that they want to climb into the others skin and stay there forever. but thats not all. they can fuck nasty in a platonic or non-platonic manner that changes everything or not very much at all, their relationship can break every known societal rule that both planets enforce and defy definition, their relationship can contain sex or no sex and romance or no romance, whats important is that theyre each others entire world. And the joy i get being able to slip seamlessly in and out of these different interpretations is like no other

aroace culture is desperately wanting the relationships others have, even with a platonic partner. knowing they may eventually want to move on to a different sort of relationship and wondering if you'll ever find anyone else like you.

I love how the entire aroace community latched onto Ryland Grace with no hesitation and have used his character as an outlet for frustrations regarding real-world politics surrounding our identities.

Dr. Ryland Grace was arguably the perfect backup candidate for his mission. Stratt got that right. He had no children, no life partner, no family, not even a dog. All he had was his students and that was enough for him, but that made him replaceable.

Right?

Not only were Grace’s wishes completely ignored, his life and his value as a person was undermined. Simply because he had no one but his students to care for his wellbeing, because he wouldn’t have someone at home waiting for him to come back.

Aroace people deal with similar treatment simply because romance and sex are seen as essential to the human experience, completely disregarding any and all other types of connection. One’s inherent value as a person is not lost when they choose to live life without romantic or sexual relationships. One’s value is simply in existing.

Aroace people know this well, which is why so many have become so attached to Ryland as a character. Many of us see his way of life as the end goal for ourselves, so any one of us would have been seen as just as dispensable, by Stratt and by society as a whole.

Aroace people love Dr. Ryland Grace because his life mattered just as much as everyone else’s, and so do ours.
