lestats the kind of guy that believes hes incapable of sexism because he read a bunch of simone de beauvoir and harriet taylor mill when first wave feminist philosophy was building in europe and because he believes, of course, in the equal rights of sexes, that he would never do anything sexist - he knows so many terrifying, strong, incredible women, loves the art produced by women, etc - but he doesn't examine how he perpetuates misogyny, and specifically in the context of season 1, how he perpetuates misogynoir in the post-slavery american south, and then how his wounded ego and trauma-frazzled brain continues to lean back on misogyny - judging regina for her hustle, demanding to be coddled by gabrielle, specifically hounding tough cookie about her musical ability, using the memory of claudia as a muse after conspiring to kill her, how he touched akasha in her sleeping state - because he will not self-examine further. he would join the revolution but he wont do the dishes.

the writers did so fucking well at portraying and deconstructing the over abundant amount that lestat in the text romanticizes his abusers. he calls it the "seduction of magnus" multiple times throughout the vampire chronicles instead of admitting he was preyed upon. when you read the books you have to look between the lines of his flowery prose and avoidance but the show took a corny over the top music video style approach and then slammed it next to a full blown ptsd flashback to make sure the audience did not have a chance to misinterpret or mock anything and i respect them for that

i actually don’t mind not having armand chop off nicki’s hands because i think it furthers the idea that armand’s fatal flaw is his inaction. he spends two hundred years keeping a coven in the dirt not doing anything to change it until lestat shows up and does it for him [while armand fails to intervene]. he doesn’t like nicki but doesn’t do anything about him and waits for that problem to resolve itself. fastforward a few centuries he’s refusing to make a fledgling and betrayalmaxxing by failing to do what the coven wants him to do (get rid of louis) but also not doing what louis wants him to do (get rid of coven) . eventually it’s decided for him. even when louis goes down to confront lestat and armand knows that lestat might just be like You know i saved you in there he still doesn’t do anything and just waits to see how it plays out. then seventy years of trying to keep a failing marriage going “picking lint off the sofa” as louis is at least out there investing in real estate and fucking/killing san fransisco boys. only real initiative he shows is torturing/turning daniel.

unrelated but interesting how this episode is showing us more than ever how daniel’s fatal flaw is his impatience and inability to pace himself which leads to him baiting others into acting out, all while the one person he wants a reaction out of most is staying firmly out of his grasp. not that they have anything to do with each other
