Hey y’all, welcome to my rangers apprentice blog. I’ve loved the series ever since I was a kid, but only really joined the fandom recently.

I've just realized something about Gilan

I think, and I believe most of the fandom agrees, that Gilan exudes sheer chaotic energy. Something about that man guarantees he is a menace when he wants to be. But, interestingly, whenever we see Gilan put into stressful situations in the series, Gilan keeps his shit together better than Halt does! He may be more expressive, but he takes far less drastic actions and covers all of his legal bases more thoroughly. By this I mean that Gilan, in that one short story I have forgotten the name of, gathered evidence and attempted to go through legal channels, where as Halt at roughly the same time period is straight up forging documents. Halt is way less afraid of getting in legal trouble, and therefore kinda just Does Shit, and Gilan doesn't.

This leads me to two conclusions

One, which is actually reasonable: Since we primarily see Gilan through the perspective of a young, impressionable apprentice who is almost always in a very scary situation, Gilan holds himself to a higher standard when around Will than when he is with his mentor. This leads to him looking more responsible to the audience than he actually is.

Two, which is much much funnier: Gilan saw past Halt's blank demeanor and actually realized how batshit insane he can be and went "Nope, not doing that", and now specifically tries to be more reasonable than his mentor. This is in direct contrast to Will, who picked up those behaviors immediately and simply does the same thing as Halt but with a massive smile on his face

I still don’t think I’ll ever get over the fact that Will and Horace’s most popular ship name is whorace. Like whore-ass. 10/10 no notes whoever came up w it is a literary genius

I just found out John Flanagan passed away - his Ranger’s Apprentice books were hugely influential for me getting into fantasy, and were really a staple of my childhood. My parents read the first one or two to me before I got too excited to wait and read the rest on my own, and I had a Ranger’s Cloak I’d always wear to Renaissance Fairs.

I got to hear him speak once at a Barnes and Noble event and remember how funny and genuine he was. Someone asked a question about character names, and he said something to the effect of, ‘your main characters names are the ones you’re going to write the most often, so they should be as few letters as possible’ that always made me smile reading about Will and Halt.

Very sad to hear of his passing, and incredibly grateful for the tremendous legacy he left behind.

Wow. Don’t even know how to start this. I knew this day would come eventually, yet it still feels so surreal.

I can’t accurately express how much of an impact Flanagan’s stories have had on my life. From giving me exciting stories to read at recess, to fueling my interest in storytelling and media analysis, to forging new friendships, to exploring Europe, to inspiring me to create my own work. My current long-term project wouldn’t even exist if it hadn’t started with me playing around with RA characters and my own OCs.

Though my thoughts on the RA and TRR series have grown more cynical over the years, I keep turning back to them. There’s a magic in those words that will never fully fade, even when every character has been met, every surprise spoiled. These books have had such a profound impact on me and it hurts to think no more is coming.

My heart goes out to his friends and family. I’m sure they don’t need me to tell them this, but he created something incredible. Rest in peace, John Flanagan.

I didn't expect my day to start with the news that our Head Ranger, John Flanagan, has passed away. As I shared it with others, I then got to know he passed away two months ago.

Dear John, thank you for all you've done and for the world that you created. Ranger's Apprentice has meant a lot to me and helped me when I felt lost. You'll be greatly missed. Rest in peace, beloved Head Ranger🍂

The only reason Halt can handle eye contact is because even though it makes him uncomfortable, it also makes the person he's looking at uncomfortable when he stares into their soul and he gets joy from that
