Most Pop Up Parades are about 1/10 - 1/9 scale, but based on the announced height of PUP chimera Falin and the official product photos, I calculated that it was about 1/12 scale, like a Figma. I preordered it based on that assumption, and I was right! (I did also find out today that GSC implied this on twitter a year ago.)

They may not quite be exactly in scale, since Falin is canonically taller than Marcille, and her body looks a bit small when they're together. I think GSC tried to make the figure as big as possible without altering the proportions of her chimera body or raising the price even higher.

This figure is HUGE, by the way - please excuse the messy background in my photos, because I've got a huge styrofoam cube from her package in my way, and I can't figure out where to put this enormous monster in the first place. You could probably fit her on top of an Xbox One with all four feet and her tail touching the ground, but her wings stretch out even further. Based on the official photos, I thought the wings were folded against her sides, so you could turn her sideways to stand on a reasonably sized shelf. But she's actually over 12" / 30cm from front to back, and around 16" / 40cm wide.

The Falin heads are almost exactly the size of a Figma head, so the extra bonus head from GSC direct preorders could potentially be used for a custom human Falin figure. I'm going to wait and see if they release an actual Falin Figma before I do any cutting and drilling, but that could be quite a while - the Senshi Figma didn't go up for preorder until a year after the second cours of the anime ended. Lately a lot of prize toys and other cheap items have been about 1/12 scale with great sculpting, too, like Relax Time figures, Furyu noodle stoppers, and various Sega items. We might end up with a really cheap Falin that's perfect for head swaps.

King Gainer doing some treetop acrobatics. this is a pretty bad figure as Robot Damashiis go, but it can still do all this without any support aside from its own body and the branch it's on. i only had one part break after dropping it a few times, and i managed to still get the shots by propping one hair tendril up with the others. i wasn't having ANY fun with this figure before i took it outside, so it's worth it!

(i’ve been trying to dig up all the illustrations of eva characters in modern fashion that the evangelion store uses on merchandise and in promotional materials. most of it is pretty classy but this one from 2018 is an exceptionally dumb item)

i've been rewatching The Expanse

So a friend of mine recently came into possession of “Tic Toc”, the Gobots alarm clock. The figure itself is a bit of an oddity, though not too odd - it’s a large figure of the same basic robot design as the Gobots transforming wristwatch. (Both contain working digital clocks.) 

The really odd thing, though, was on the side of the box - aside from cross-sells of itself and the wristwatch bot, there’s a promo for “Roll-Bot”, a digital clock robot that folds up into a sphere. This was never released as a Gobot, as far as anyone knows, and there don’t seem to be mentions of it in other marketing materials from the period (such as scans fans have made of newspaper ads that promote the alarm clock).

I figured it had to be another existing toy, not an unproduced original design  -there were a lot of American companies licensing and renaming obscure robot toys at this time. Maybe it was something from a different Japanese manufacturer that Tonka had attempted to license, or had licensed but couldn’t get distributed.

I still don’t know the origin of this item, but I have found photos of the real deal, as well as some info on how it was released at one point - Wolfsbigbadgarage on ebay has a copy of what is clearly the same robot, distributed by a company named Nelsonic under the name “Playtime Robot Clock”.

While the box shows the Playtime Robot Clock in red and blue, the actual item inside is chromed silver. As a silver and black orb, it’s actually quite reminiscent of Metal Man, from Takara’s Meteor Robo, a series of small toy robots that transform into spheres. 

Unlike many other items from Takara’s Microchange toy line, these weren’t included as part of the Transformers franchise in the 80s - though they did appear as Transformers many years later, in different colors. With this history,  evidently coming close to but not quite becoming a Gobot, the spherical Robot Clock makes a very odd counterpart indeed.

when Mario arrives in New Donk City, the scraps of paper fluttering in the wind are flyers for Bowser & Peach's wedding. if you zoom in via photo mode, you can see that they're not only readable but the textures are quite high-res.
