When I was a kid, I once walked around an entire mall with gum in my mouth that had almost immediately turned to liquid for some reason. I didn't want to bother anyone to find a trashcan.

You see a "low maintenance" child and I see a child too afraid to ask for their needs to be met.

STANDING ROCK INDIAN RESERVATION, S.D. — Ray Taken Alive had been fighting for this moment for two years: At his urging, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council was about to take the rare and severe step of banishing a nonprofit organization from the tribe’s land.
The Lakota Language Consortium had promised to preserve the tribe’s native language and had spent years gathering recordings of elders, including Taken Alive’s grandmother, to create a new, standardized Lakota dictionary and textbooks.
But when Taken Alive, 35, asked for copies, he was shocked to learn that the consortium, run by a white man, had copyrighted the language materials, which were based on generations of Lakota tradition. The traditional knowledge gathered from the tribe was now being sold back to it in the form of textbooks.

I’m reblogging this again because people in the notes are focusing on the wrong things.
This isn’t about books. This is about an organization founded and led by two white men using the work of indigenous peoples to create resources for their endangered languages and then not giving those people access to those resources. It’s about them literally copywriting the words of Elders and other indigenous people and refusing to let their tribes use them.
People are fighting to have access to the recordings that deceased loved ones gave to this organization and being denied because those recordings are copywrited. These men are literally taking aspects of these communities and saying, “these are ours now, no one else can use them, not even the people who shared them with us.”
And it’s not just one or two people who have issues with this. It’s not just one tribe. It’s multiple accounts of this organization and its founders violating the boundaries of both individuals and tribes and taking what wasn’t theirs to take.
This isn’t acceptable under any circumstances.
The Lakota Language Consortium is trying to strip Ray Taken Alive of his teaching license. His hearing is on June 27th and his wife is on the 29th of this year (2024)!
He is a little less than 50% of his $50,000 goal to fund his legal fees if anyone can donate here.

I am so fucking SICK AND TIRED of these paternalistic “charity” folks, pretending to give a single flying fuck about Native peoples. Sick of people putting on this helpful mask, when all they want to do is own more and capitalise on Indigenous peoples and their good works.
I am not a rich person, by any stretch. I make ends meet, and that’s about it most of the time. I was paid for work I put into an educational art book to help keep my language alive, but the book is and always will be a FREE resource, not to be sold or resold, but to be handed out for free at schools and organisations in my home lands. Thankfully, the people who paid to create this resource have the same goal of keeping it free. But my point is if I can barely afford my electricity bill but refuse to make money on keeping my language alive, then you know these fuckers who are LITERALLY STEALING the words and work of the Lakota people to resell as their own property can afford to keep this resource free for this community.
But they aren’t. Because they don’t care about the people that the language they are “trying to save” belongs to. Just like all the museums trying to “preserve” native artefacts and bodies by stealing them. Just like the government trying to “help” Indigenous people by funding things WE DO, only to take full credit and then cancel the projects/programs later.
Stop treating us like our culture is yours to rescue (steal), and being offended when don’t thank you for it later.
We don’t need you to rescue our culture from ourselves. We need you to let us rescue it from you.
Some good news! He’s kept his license and received enough donations to pay his legal fees.

finally decided to sit down and watch the incredibles again. there will be no commentary because i’m gonna be too busy watching it
okay i just gotta say
having been married for 3 years now (almost), i really love how bob & helen argue. when i was a kid it just came off to me that everyone in this movie was being super mean for no reason but when you watch it as an adult it’s different. i really appreciate that even when bob is frustrated/angry he basically never lashes out at helen or the kids, his problem is he’s withdrawn and existantialling. i also really appreciate that when they do fight they’re actually more expressing their frustration than attacking each other. it’s only later when things get real that helen (understandably) gets really angry.
also edna’s advice is actually really good, helen’s just melting down over the idea of losing her husband (which is sweet and helps us understand her character) but edna tells her to confront it immediately, hold bob to account by leaning into his concern (all his heroics being forgotten) and reminding him that she’s a super, too. direct action is a blessing in communication.
i love how the movie communicates bob’s competency, like he’s actually handling all the twists and turns of the situation rapidly deteriorating very well, the only thing that throws him off is when his family gets involved. we also see helen’s competency in the plane scene and how she immediately knows something’s up when no one responds on the radio
syndrome is such a fucking good villain, saying ‘i seem to recall you prefer to work alone’ and laughing at him when he believes he’s murdered the guy’s wife and kids???? holy fuck
as previously mentioned bob breaking down and sobbing alone in the containment room shaped my personality
ah the good old days of 2004 when having a voluptuous mom ass was a bad thing. good riddance, we don’t miss you.
also the it’s a neat little parallel to bob’s body image struggles, they really went to great lengths to showcase that these people are equals & soulmates
the kids are really well-written too, they feel very authentically their age and they both have motivations, the writing does a great job of showing how the gravity of the situation sinks in for them and forces them to rise to meet it. dash especially fascinates me in this movie because he’s just the right balance between immature and starting, just starting to get that life is a big deal and stakes are real and you’ve got to care about what you’re doing and try to do the right thing in every situation. the way the kids instinctively protect each other even though all we’ve seen of them so far in the movie is antagonism is just *clenches fist* so good

Fellow Windows 11 users: how to disable newly-installed Microsoft AI!
Folks, with the new updates that've come down recently, Microsoft has installed its "Copilot" AI app on your machine. It apparently cannot be removed.
But it can be disabled.

The slightly more complex and risky approach (as regedit is never entirely safe) comes via the excellent Pihko Misit, aka @smokepaw.bsky.social over at Bluesky). I've just done this to my own desktop machine, and all's well with it now.
Here's what to do:
(1) You need to have Admin rights for the machine and be logged in to the administrator account.
Now, right-click on the Start menu (Windows logo on the Taskbar.) A menu pops up; about half way down it you'll see Terminal and Terminal (Admin). Click on the Terminal (Admin) option.
(2) A DoS-like box will open. (For those of you who've never interacted with a Windows terminal window before, it looks like this:)
On the command line (i.e. the first empty line), copy and paste this:
reg add HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot /v TurnOffWindowsCopilot /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Then hit Enter.
If successful, you'll see a line pop up saying so. Congratulations! But you're not quite finished.
Now you need to close all programs and fully shut down the machine. A restart isn't enough, it needs to be fully powered down and started back up.
"And now," Pihko says, "ou have a NSA-like AI spy dormant on your machine. Stay vigilant, odds are it'll turn back on with future updates! Big Corporate wants you to be compliant. Don't be!"
