1. Compound words in English usually maintain the enunciations of each component, although the first part is usually stressed a little more than the rest. With the word "sunflower", for example, you would still pronounce the word "flower" normally, but would add a little more stress to "sun", like you were saying "it's not just any flower, it's a sunflower". Does that make sense?

2. Fun fact, "..." (or rather, the pause which it indicates) is called an ellipsis! An ellipsis is an omission of words that indicates when attention fades or the rest of something is implied. When used in quotes, it indicates where words irrelevant to the message have been omitted. You can also use an ellipsis to indicate certain moods, like dejection, displeasure, befuddlement, contemplation... (see what I did there?) It's quite a versatile trio of dots, so honestly, I doubt you're over- or mis- using it.

This is all really cool but the english-speaking obsession with whether a word exists is usually (at least in my experience) along completely different lines than in this post.

When an english-speaking person asks “is that a word?” we aren’t trying to find a word to communicate an idea*, we’re checking if the way we have modified a root word is correct. It’s a game.

English is such a mish-mash of other languages that when you need to change the part of speech of a word or make a noun plural or something, the way to do that isn’t always obvious.

For example, an eternal question in my part of the world is “what is the word for more than one moose?” The obvious first attempt is “mooses” but you immediately know that can’t be right, because some similar words change in a completely different (but still consistent!) way, ie goose → geese, mouse → mice, louse → lice. This would imply that the plural of moose is “meese.”

But we know that’s wrong too, mostly because it just sounds silly. So what’s the actual answer? And why do these similar-sounding and similarly-spelled words work differently? If you look it up, you will find that it’s because they come from different languages. Goose, mouse, and louse all come from Old English, a Germanic language. But no european had ever seen anything like a moose until they came to north america, which gives us a clue: “moose” is a word from the Algonquin language family (which includes about two dozen languages), and the plural of moose in those languages is… (drum roll)… “moose”

Oh

So sometimes in english the answer to the question “does this word exist?” is No. But in the process of finding that out we learn a lot. It’s a fun game.
