Form 6 is pretty complex - it’s a Welsh form called an Awdl Gywydd. Four line stanzas with seven syllables per line; the first line must rhyme with the third syllable of the second line, and the third line must rhyme with the fifth syllable of the fourth line. Additionally, lines two and four must rhyme at the end. I call this one Rat Killer, based on a recent conversation. I know it’s a bit silly, but damn, I’m proud of myself for writing in such a complicated form.

And just like that, I’m done with all the “A” forms in the challenge! Excited to move onto the B’s!

lipstick on my blue checked dress hand between my legs, in front of my house, eyeless in the dark my breath held like gauze to a wound whenever I get myself off sweat that carpets my skin, moss and dead brown leaves, even in the thick of summer the answer to womanhood buried somewhere there, in between my pores, small as a cell, large and windowed, that secret lodged underneath my fingernails the long white scar underneath my breasts exists only when you're looking for it

God give me a lover with two hands broad as kites wide enough to catch on the wind of my expression able to stand against me at my boldest able to soar when the storm dies down / God give me a lover whose eyes are gasoline leaking straight from the engine of her heart to meet with the inferno rising up in mine to set off a reaction visible from space / God give me a lover with an enchanted tongue that slides like a curse word past my parted lips let everything he says drip with good intention let his teeth give just enough that I can pull the goodness out / God give me a lover whose shoulders form balance beams strong enough to bear my thighs like battle gear the river's mouth poised at her waiting smile the tension of muscle as she leans in to drink / God give me a lover with a voice that carries through walls across planes of existence like a butter knife through margarine light enough to lay across a whispered promise light enough to wake me when morning rolls around / And God when you have given birth to this monstrosity set him loose on me like a plague of frogs in my bedroom, in my bed, into my house and inside me in my heart to make his home there, never to be torn out

sleep on sweet tigress

tell men to guzzle piss and drag out the grindstone to arch your back against scratching that itch right above your left shoulder blade be burnished copper and blind them with one good glint from the devious sun warm yourself in the light as you watch them burn bring your tongue to every battle bring the thorns in your paw pare flesh from bone like a butcher would no blood to be lapped up

most of my memoryis apocryphal: i’m surethe fan wasn’t spinning slowly. i’m not surethere was a fan at all. all i can swear into existence was thehorrible shag carpetthe color of licked stampsand light moving pastthe slits of her monstera. my hands, meanderingup to the hem of herdenim shorts. she hadn’t shaved. each hairglittered like asphaltunderneath harsh sun. i remember the wayher mouth tasted, the beachsand grit of her lip scrub,the way her words landedin the cavern of my chest.i’m sure she doesn’tremember this: my eyesalways fixed on hers, even when she wasn’tsparing me a glance.

Hera

would you recognize my name

if it was something said over

the hurricane, all my husband’s

great boons and booming voice

if it flitted past a woman’s

vocal cords, little more

than a terrifying whisper,

sounding a bit like Here

or Hair, or a slight variation

on biblical and household names?

would you know immediately

the work I do

or that I am other than wife

and mother, stewardess

ushering you in

through the grand foyer of heaven?

Would you know I am always

picking up my husband’s mess?

His socks, the argyle broken hearts,

the women who beg

for their skin to be bark

after he makes them

not want to be human.

Do you think I hate these women?

Do you think I loathe these nymphs

as much as self-indicted heroes?

I do not claim the ichor

in that killer’s body -

yes, Heracles, near son of me

sharer of a moniker

and murderous beast.

I did not raise him to slay lions.

I did not ask him to

obliterate his seed.

All he wanted was

to leach off me

until I birthed the galaxy.

Would you believe

men always want you to think

the pain they cause you

is for your gain?

Because I would rather

a starless night

and a name people knew me by.
