New Zealand Becomes First Country to Introduce Paid Leave to Domestic Violence Victims (July 26, 2018)
Any worker who is subjected to domestic violence is eligible for 10 days paid leave so they can take the necessary actions to separate from their partner, protect their family, move locations, or take legal action…the legislation will also require employers to offer additional workplace safety measures, such as changing work locations or contact information.

Doctors, nurses group relieves patients of $1.4M in medical debts
Hundreds of people in Kansas City were surprised to learn recently that their past-due medical debts had been taken care of, thanks to a group of philanthropic physicians.
Midwest Direct Primary Care Alliance, a group of doctors and nurse practitioners dedicated to growing primary care in the area, announced the debt relief this week.
Providers donated more than $10,000 for the project and partnered with RIP Medical Debt, a New York nonprofit, to forgive $1.4 million in debt for nearly 800 people in Kansas City.
The doctors and RIP Medical Debt bought the patients’ debtsat a discount because they were years old. The patients then received a golden envelope in the mail, which contained a letter informing them of the payoff.
“That debt forgiveness letter is your proof the debt has been abolished and is no longer collectible by anyone,” RIP Medical Debt states on its website.

Newly discovered shark species honors female pioneer
Eugenie Clark was a pioneer in shark biology, known around the world for her illuminating research on shark behavior. But she was a pioneer in another critical way, as one of the first women of prominence in the male-dominated field of marine biology.
Fondly labeled the “Shark Lady,” Clark, who founded Mote Marine Laboratory and continued studying fishes until she passed away in 2015 at age 92, will now be recognized with another distinction: namesake of a newly discovered species of dogfish shark.
The species, named Squalus clarkae, also known as Genie’s Dogfish, was identified from the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic Ocean. The confirmation of this new species was reported this month in the journal Zootaxa.
