I feel like not enough people realize that people under enormous strain act really really fucking Weird
If someone is doing things that don't make Sense, try to understand that it is entirely possible that their brain is probably under an enormous weight and fracturing under the pressure. People who have been stabbed will sometimes talk a circle around the fact that they've been stabbed because stress and shock prevent you from recognizing the distress you are in and what you need to do to seek help for it. PTSD will do this also. You will find yourself repeatedly jamming a bag of frozen fruit into the same spot in the freezer where it doesn't fit and keeps falling, over and over and over, focused on nothing but that bag. You will decide that a beanbag chair is 10000% necessary to your life. You will lose your entire shit because you stubbed your toe on a table and that means the whole setup of your furniture is wrong. These are largely harmless examples. People under strain will also hurt themselves and others. Cornered animals bite. And it doesn't heal the bite to go "Hey, are you okay?" But it might get you to an animal that stops biting, so you can start to heal. And before you had an animal that bit, you probably had an animal that kept doing shit you didn't understand as stress signals
Mental illness is Off-putting. Trauma and stress make people hard to be around. There are no perfect victims. If your framework for someone under pressure are people who cry photogenically at home in the bathroom or at night when everyone else is asleep and then wake up and act like they're fine then you will fail to recognize it when your coworker who's normally really nice suddenly blows up on someone for leaving forks in the company sink.
Everyone is going through shit. And it doesn't make it okay for them to treat others badly, but it also sometimes makes it difficult for them to recognize that they're treating you badly, like the person on the phone with 9-11 who no longer realizes that he's telling the operator about his day and not answering questions. When your friend of ten years who has a new boyfriend suddenly starts being a massive bitch to you about your weight maybe she's just being a cunt, or maybe she's internalized some bullshit. You don't have to take that, but you Can go "Hey, what the fuck?" And that is often more helpful than you realize. It is easy to assume that someone who does something cruel is acting with intent, but especially in cases where someone's behavior changed in a short span of time, they aren't, any more than the person who is convinced the beanbag chair is going to fix them.
You don't have to give people endless chances. But you should give them at least one chance. Because on your worst week, it's going to be you crying at your friend's birthday party because she ran out of chili before you got to have some, and you're going to want some grace for yourself.
All of this and also, sometimes you just cannot control your reaction even if it’s harmful or mean. Which also doesn’t make it acceptable to treat people poorly, but it does tie into the give people a second or third chance and communicate before deciding they’re just terrible now
hey nonbinary parents u kno how there’s shortened terms for mother and father but no good shortened terms for parent?? well i have the solution for you!!! instead of “parent” u can call urself “guardian” which can be shortened to “guard” and then when ur kid says things like “sorry i can’t go my guard says no” they sound rich and mysteriously important and u dont get misgendered and everyone wins
Additionally, when your kid has a bad influence trying to get them to do something they know you would be against they could say “Sorry, I don’t want to let my guard down” which is both mysterious AND a pun

College freshman’s mother identified his body after he was reported missing following 4 July boat trip with friends
On 4 July, Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and a group of friends went on a boat trip to Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf coast. Wells’s friends all returned back home that evening, but Wells did not, prompting his mother to report him missing and ask for help on social media, triggering a two-day search that caught national attention. That search came to an end on Monday, when a body was found on the island. On Tuesday, Wells’s mother, Christine Wonsley, identified the body as belonging to Wells.“ His father, our family, friends and I are absolutely devastated,” Wonsley wrote in a Facebook post. “My heart is broken for my sweet son who was always willing to cheer and uplift others. Nolan was a special soul, God took his time creating our son.” No cause of death has been reported and an investigation is ongoing. Wells, a college freshman at Southwest Mississippi community college, would have turned 19 next month. While the search was still ongoing, Wonsley posted photos of Wells and the rest of the Horn Island group on Facebook. Social media users quickly suggested that Wells’s disappearance was due to a racial incident: per the photos, Wells was Black, and the other three men on the boat were white. National civil rights organizations have commented on Wells’s death. “His name was Nolan Xavier Wells. He was 18. He was loved. He deserved more time,” the NAACP wrote on Instagram. “Our hearts are with Nolan’s family, friends, and community as they navigate this devastating loss. Every Black man deserves the chance to grow old.”
What happened to Nolan Xavier Wells, and do his friends know anything? That’s the question his grandfather, Christopher Wells Sr., is posing
“Too many unanswered questions how can a Island that was searched yesterday produce my grandsons body this morning,” Wells Sr. wrote Monday. “There’s nothing right about this, Nolan Xavier Wells deserved the same things that people he knew and associated with will enjoy in life.” [...] “Where is the video of the big fight that occurred Saturday evening before everyone left the island?” he asked on Facebook. A viral video circulating online shows a panoramic view of water, but at one point, an argument can be heard in the background. The camera then pans to a group of young men in swimsuits talking on the beach. There is one Black man wearing a blue swimsuit. Many online believe that it is Wells. However, Atlanta Black Star is unable to confirm the identities of the people in the video and the original source. One witness, Matthew Lamp, claimed on Facebook he was in one of the boats when he heard the fight. “One of my passengers is pretty certain he was part of the group that was almost fighting around 5 p.m.,” Lamp wrote on Facebook. He said the boat that Wells’ friends were in left the scene very quickly after the fight. “The three people on my boat that saw it all say [the fight] was amongst themselves,” Lamp wrote on Facebook. In the video, you can also hear swearing from the group of young men on the beach. “One of the boat drivers did mention [Nolan] and his friends was fighting amongst themselves,” Deidra Archangel, another witness, wrote on Facebook.
An independent autopsy of the body of Nolan Wells shows that the cause of death is undetermined pending an investigation, according to attor
An attorney representing the family of Nolan Wells said on Wednesday that an independent autopsy failed to identify a clear cause of death in a case that has drawn national attention. "These findings are inconclusive ... pending further investigation," said Benjamin Crump. Speaking during a press conference at an NAACP gathering in Chicago, Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney, said the body wasn't in a state that would allow a complete forensic review of the remains. The autopsy was performed by Dr. Roger Mitchell, who was not present. While Crump acknowledged the autopsy found no evidence of wrongdoing, he described the findings as inconclusive: "This pathologist cannot rule out if any intervening non-accidental factors contributed to or caused the death of Nolan Wells," he said. [...] During Wednesday's press conference, NAACP President Derrick Johnson accused investigators of mishandling the case. "We are accusing them of being derelict in their duties to follow up and to ensure that, regardless of what happened, there was a proper investigation," he said. Last week, the NAACP passed a resolution urging law enforcement, including the U.S. Department of Justice, to "complete an in-depth and openly transparent review of how Nolan came to be left on the island and of all activities" leading up to the time when his body was recovered.
You can make a movie with where the only white character is a man named Ray Cism whose one line of his 16 seconds of screen time is “I seriously hate women and minorities.” and you’ll find fifty bajillion reader x Ray Cism fanfics and renaissance style drawings of him with a halo of golden light
This is probably going to be an unpopular opinion, but here it goes anyways. A lot of you are making up people to be mad at.
Let's take sinners for example. There is a white guy with like 2 lines exclusively about hating minorities in this movie. His name is not Ray, it's Bert (I had to look that up on imdb), he is the kkk-vampire and not a single person on earth is writing self-insert fic about this guy. They are writing self-insert fic about the central antagonist, who is also a vampire. Girls like villains, what else is new.
And sure, maybe I am being to literal here, but yelling at people that they are liking a thing in the wrong way is just the fastest way to kill a fandom. The underlying things this post is pointing at are real and they do exist. Societal beauty standards center white people, a lot of (white) people have are harder time sympathising with people of color. But those things are not fandom problems. They are just general problems of living in white supremacist society and they show up in all facets of or society including fandom. But you are not gonna fix them by telling people they are somehow bad for liking the sexy vampire.
I really liked Sinners. But if I look at the top text posts for example 4 out of 10 are wank about how people are problematic or racist for the way they like the movie. And to be completely honest, I think that this atmosphere is also a huge factor in why Sinners fandom is not a big as it could be. Which is really fucking sad.
@ypsilion I can tell by the points you brought up in your post that you have a very surface level understanding of the world, and that you either lack critical thinking skills, or are being willfully ignorant, because YOU feel bad for liking the """sexy vampire""" and because YOU feel called out by this post.
Anyway, I'm not sure if you're white but if you are, I think you should consider deeply how white supremacy has benefited you and hurt others, rather than just accepting it as part of society. I think you need to begin the internal work of questioning why you always latch onto white male characters, even if they are not the main character, or are horribly misogynistic, racist, etc. You should consider how your underlying beliefs or racial prejudices affect your fandom choices or what you find yourself gravitating towards. Ask yourself why you are so deeply programmed with white beauty standards, and how you can grow past that.
This can help you interact with fandom in a more critical way, like the original post is doing, rather than claiming the original post, which calls out racist patterns in fandom, is part of what's killing fandoms...
Lastly, fandom doesn't exist in a vacuum, nothing does. White supremacy does in fact inform your opinions and thoughts, as it does to us all. As an adult, it's your job to begin deconstructing these ideas in order to truly push back against it.
