your !! comments !! on fics !! are !! important !! to us writers !!
i’ve been seeing a lot of people saying they feel bad for leaving comments, especially on older fics, because they’re afraid to bother the author.
but i’m here to tell you this: BOTHER US!! you have no idea how much writers appreciate the interaction. every single time i get a comment on one of my fics, it makes my entire WEEK. it’s how we know if people resonated with our writing. writers love talking about their work and about the original media! so please, BOTHER US. even if it’s just emojis. don’t ever feel bad for interacting! that’s literally how you keep fandoms alive.
wattpad really gave ao3 a huge free promo with their new policy update that makes things even worse for their users. so to all the people who are now moving to ao3 due to this…
welcome! here are what you need to know about ao3 and how it’s the complete opposite of wattpad
trigger warning for the mention of contents that are allowed on ao3 that can be triggering to some.
ao3 is a non-profit organization. it’s run by fans (people like you and me), for fans.
fans donate to the site on their own free will to keep the site up and running smoothly.
ao3 is not a social media. it is an archive.
ao3 doesn’t have ads. it doesn’t have algorithms. it doesn’t have “going viral.”
everything is endlessly free on ao3. there is no “ao3 premium.” you will never see a single ad on ao3, and you can download as many fics as you want to read offline for free.
ao3 doesn’t have an app. and ao3 doesn’t need an app. any “ao3 apps” you see are third-party apps and are not affiliated with ao3, so be careful giving these shady apps your login infos or other personal information.
ao3 was built with the main purpose to 1.) be completely against censorship and 2.) host fics that are banned on other platforms like wattpad.
the reason ao3 doesn’t have an app is because for it to have its own app, appstore and google play store will have to approve it first. and due to the contents ao3 allows, chances are that it won’t get approved. which is actually a good thing. it doesn’t need an app. it works more than fine without an app.
on ao3, every single thing is allowed as long as it is fanfic or fan work (original works, fan art and video edits count as fan works, but if you want to post a video edits on ao3, you will have to post it elsewhere and then link it back to ao3 — ao3 cannot host video edits on its platform due to copyright issues)
by every single thing that is fanfic, I mean every single thing:
the filthiest smut without plot that is written purely for sexual pleasure is allowed. it has its own canonical tag called “plot what plot, porn without plot.”
fics that focus on non-consensual sexual intercourse are allowed, doesn’t matter if the fics glorify or romanticize the act, doesn’t matter if they’re written as kinks. they have their own canonical tag called “rape/non-con.”
fics about characters who are minors are allowed, even if they’re portrayed in a sexual manner, even if they’re non-consensual sexual intercourse. even if the minor characters are romantically and/or sexually involved with characters who are adults. even if the fics are written in ways that glorify and/or romanticize the thing. they have their own canonical tag called “underage sex.”
fics about incest are allowed. doesn’t matter if they glorify or romanticize the relationship. they have their own canonically tag called “incest.” fun fact: the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
fics about self-harm and suicide are allowed. doesn’t matter if they glorify or romanticize the act. they have their own canonical tags called “self-harm” and “suicide” also “suicidal ideation”, “suicide attempt”, “implied/referenced suicide”, etc.
fics about violence and gore are allowed, even if they were written for the sake of shock value. they have their own canonical tag called “violence”, “blood and gore”, “blood and injuries”, etc.
rpf is also allowed. doesn’t matter if the content of the fics are dark and taboo. they’re treated the same way as any other fics.
every single dark and taboo fic you can think of is allowed. and it has its own canonical tag. because it is the main reason why ao3 was created in the first place.
“but what do I do if I don’t wanna see fics about xyz?” you can filter out any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
“what do I do if I wanna find fics about xyz?” you can search for any specific tag, character and/or pairing you want.
a lot of ao3 users rely on tags to search for specific tags, pairings, characters they want. they also rely on tags to filter out and exclude specific tags, pairings, and characters that they don’t want to see.
ao3’s tagging system is by far the most efficient one I’ve ever seen.
on ao3, our main principles are “don’t like don’t read” — which means YOU have a responsibility to curate your own internet experience. yes, ao3 allows all kind of messed up fics, but they also allow you the ability to NOT see anything you don’t want to see, by filtering out specific fics, pairings and/or characters.
no. you cannot harass authors who write about things that disgust you. you can and will be reported for harassment, and ao3 takes harassment very seriously. they will not take your side. because fucked up fics are allowed on ao3—fucked up fics are the main reason ao3 was created—whereas harassment is a direct violation of their terms of service.
ao3 is a house of the freaks and the perverts (affectionate). you ARE in the house of the freaks and the perverts. so don’t think about harassing or being rude to the freaks and the perverts who built this anti-censorship house and are kind enough to let you in.
ao3 is proship, profic, and anti-censorship.
any writer can write whatever they want, however they want. the only etiquette is that you tag your stuff properly and accurately
mistagging for visibility is heavily frowned upon here, and it won’t get your works more views. people will either block or report you if you deliberately mistag things with the purpose of getting your fic more views. as I’ve said before, ao3 is an archive. it’s not a social media. it doesn’t have algorithms or going viral.
there's a big difference between "&" and "/" in relationship tags: "Character A & Character B" tag means the relationship between Character A and Character B is neither romantic nor sexual, whereas "Character A/Character B" tag means the relationship between Character A and Character B is romantic and/or sexual.
if you come across a fic that has the tag “creator chose not to use archive warnings” it means the fic may or may not contain topics that can be triggering, but the author won’t tell you what these topics are, or if there are any at all. so proceed at your own risk.
that said, because ao3 is a non-profit site that hosts millions of works about others’ copyrighted characters, you CANNOT link a monetization platform anywhere on ao3, you CANNOT mention any donation, commission—or anything that involves money—anywhere on ao3. no, you cannot imply donation, commission, or anything that involves money either. that is against their terms of service.
and because ao3 is a place for fanworks, the “work section” of your post has to actually be fanwork (fanfic, original work, fan art, link to a video edit count as fanwork). anything that isn’t fanwork is not allowed.
you cannot post something on ao3 that is not fanwork. so no political statement, no call-out post, no “I’m looking for fics about xyz”.
ao3 is anti censorship as long as what your post is actually fanwork and as long as you don’t violate their terms of service that I’ve mentioned above.
ao3 has their own team of lawyers to protect them, their users, and every fanwork that is posted on their platform.
last but not least, don’t write directly onto ao3. write and store your works elsewhere before copy and paste them onto ao3 once they’re ready to post!! because ao3 does NOT autosave drafts for you, you risk losing everything you’ve typed if there’s a glitch, if the site crashes or if your device unexpectedly shuts down for whatever reason.
that’s all for now. have fun and happy writing/reading!
I don't think people who come from wattpad after the purge and now want ao3 to have its own official app understand that one of the main reasons behind the recent wattpad purge that drove them to ao3 was due to pressure from appstore demanding wattpad to be more strict and follow appstore's policy. wattpad complied in order for its app to be able to remain on appstore. thus the wattpad purge.
ao3 doesn't have an app because for it to have an app, appstore will have to approve it first. and if, hypothetically, ao3 needs appstore to approve it, it will also have to abide by appstore's pro-censorship stance and start banning dark and taboo fics, which is against its own core principle of being completely against censorship.
ao3 doesn't need an app. it works more than fine without an app. the reason ao3 can allow dark and taboo fics, the reason it can allow the most disgusting and shockingly vile fics, and be completely against censorship is because it doesn't need appstore's approval. it stands on its own as a non-profit organization with functioning site and a team of lawyers protecting its platform, its users, and every single fanwork on its platform.
everybody say thank you ao3
here's the list of things you need to know about ao3 if you're new to the platform
I never knew how much I needed and admired that beautiful punctuation until I started writing with it.
It's like comma version of a period, it’s so glorious.
Because commas are my first and all time favorite punctuation of all time, I love me a good Oxford comma. But semicolons have grown on me; they’ve shown me a new light.
I think the semicolon is top 3 punctuation of all time right along with the classic period and the stunning Oxford comma.
Oh? You wanna skip a meal? What if BND Peter Parker is in his feral spider state and wants to fuck but you can't even get on top of him from how malnourished you are. Exactly. Choose recovery and lock in bitch.
Marvel and Kevin Feige cancelling and shelving black actor-led projects like Wonder Man and Blade and sidelining characters like Monica Rambeau but has future plans to put fugly zionist and Thin Blue Line nutjob Jon Bernthal in several projects...it's so bleak.
It is also not lost on me the disproportionate spotlight female characters in the MCU get, but sure put this misogynist bum who goes out of his way to associate with Hollywood abusers and predators of women in everything Feige!
And the amount of women in the Marvel fandom continuing to shamelessly support this man especially on here 🥴

House arrest only kept you idle for almost two full days. Two days full of junk food and trash television. The days melted together as you and Bob did nothing but lounge about while the rest of the team did real superhero business.
But that changed when Bob was flipping through channels in search for Forensic Files which was schedule to play at the top of the hour. As he perused the different channels, a news channel was broadcasting live from the Damage Control facility in Manhattan. Bob thought nothing of it and went on to the next.
"Wait, go back Bobby." you asked, sitting up from your cozy spot on the couch.
"Okay," Bob replied and flipped back to the news station.
"Folks, what we are seeing right now may cause distress. The Hulk and Spider-man have fallen quite a ways down the main structure." The news anchor summarized as helicopter footage revealed the two in a heated battle.
"Oh shit," Bobby blurted out as the two were free falling out a top floor window.
Hulk was then webbed to the side of the building by Spider-man. But the restraints didn't work for long. The Hulk pushed himself off the building, ripping the exterior infrastructure, and took it down with him.
Spider-man then landed an electric uppercut against Hulk's chin mid fall. The two then crash landed onto another floor of the building. As the Hulk rose to his feet, he bore the weight of the debris due to it still being tethered to his body.
With all the might he could muster, Hulk brought down his fists with fury. Landing brutal blows and bringing down more debris on Peter. You held your breath as a massive green hand grabbed a hold of Spider-Man, with the other hand preparing for a fatal K.O.
But something stopped him, it was unclear to see on camera. Then the camera man panned down as the Hulk lost his footing and descend hundreds of feet to street level.
You shrieked and shielded your eyes before you were able to see him hit the ground. Alarmed by your reaction, Bob shot up from his seat and shut off the TV.
"Oh god," you sobbed, scarred by what you just witnessed.
"I'm so sorry," Bob sighed and moved to sit beside you.
"I should've been there," you said through gritted teeth and Bob frowned at your words. "I could've done something."
First, your father died defeating Thanos. Now Bruce, your dad's closest friend might have just lost his life. Right after being able to achieve a sense of normalcy.
Bob wrapped his arms around you, allowing you to cry into his shoulder. He didn't know what else to do besides rubbing your back in remorse. Then the realization hit you, making you pull away from his touch.
"B-but that doesn't make any sense," you sniffled, looking to Bob. "Uncle Bruce had a gamma regulation inhibitor." you explained, "Why would he take it off?" you wondered aloud.
"If you're thinking of sneaking out of the tower to find out, then I can't stop you." Bob replied as he gave you a knowing look.
"Thanks Bobby," you replied before pushing yourself off the couch and heading to the armory.
After tearing open the access panel in the elevator, you successfully got your suit back then made your way to Empire State University. You knew that there gotta be some clues as to why Uncle Bruce hulk-ed out. Arriving on campus, you made your way through the sea of reporters and nosy onlookers.
"Ms. Stark," a cop greeted as you waltzed up to the caution tape, still fully suited up.
"Official avengers business," you replied with a nod, lifting up the tape and heading inside the blocked off building. "I can't believe that worked," you mumbled to yourself after seeing that no one questioned your presence.
There were multiple cops and crime scene investigators, logging evidence and snapping photos of the eerily unscathed auditorium. Nothing seemed to be out of place, you weren't able to pick up anything with just one set of eyes.
"S.A.M., break it down for me," you muttered, loud enough for your Ai assistant to hear.
"It seems as though Banner was about to leave for the day, his belongings were packed up." he observed.
"Can you tap into the security footage?" you requested.
"Accessing the ESU surveillance database." S.A.M. replied before snapshots appeared on the screen inside your helmet.
An individual, face covered by their hood, was seen entering campus and heading straight for Bruce's classroom. They waited in the hall for class to end. After the auditorium emptied, they stepped inside. Minutes later, they emerged with Bruce right behind them. He mindlessly followed them right out the door with his inhibitor still fastened on his wrist.
"It could be the same person that possessed me a couple days back," you assumed.
"Iron Woman," an unknown voice called out, pulling you from your thoughts. You spun around quickly and saw a police officer sporting a lieutenant badge strolling up to you.
"Lieutenant," you nodded, feigning a voice of familiarity.
"Glad to have an avenger on our side," he smiled, offering a smile and a firm hand shake.
"It's vital that we get to the bottom of this," you reply as you two walked side by side.
"Yes ma'am, I've got New York's best working on it right now." he assured.
"What have you got for me?" you asked.
"According to the DODC, they locked up the person in charge of the break-ins across New York. Sent them off to a detention center on Roosevelt Island." he spoke. "Bruce Banner has been sent to a psychiatric ward for further analysis." he adds as you glanced at him.
"He survived?" you questioned and the lieutenant nodded, nervously fumbling with his thumbs. "What is it?" you pestered.
"The public wants a statement," he began, "But I don't got nothin' right now for em' that they don't already know," he shrugged as you approached the double doors of the building.
"Hey, I don't really think-" you started, hating the idea he was trying to ease you into.
"-Please Ms. Stark," he pleaded with exhaustion written all over his face. "The people need to hear something. They need a strong voice," he highlights, motioning to the podium on the front steps of the building.
You sighed, ultimately giving into his request and allowing your suit to retract into your bracelets. The reporters began throwing questions at you all at once. Cameras flashing continuously. But you weren't gonna have any of that.
"We're either gonna keep this professional or you're not getting a peep out of me." you spoke into the podium mic.
Everyone shut their mouths and their hands shot into the sky like eager kindergartners. Each of them flailing their wrists and eagerly hoping to be picked.
"Yes you, the one in the blue dress," you said, pointing into the crowd.
"Hello Ms. Stark. What can you tell us about the correlation between the DODC taking a telepathic individual into custody following the Hulk going rogue at one of their facilities?" the woman asked.
“We are being led to believe that Doctor Banner may have been targeted and provoked by that individual. In order for them to retrieve classified information.” you replied.
"And what could that be?" she questioned.
"We are still trying to identify the specific data they were searching for." you answered.
“What do you have to say about the latest attack on the Damage Control Facility?” a voice in the crowd shouted.
"You didn't wait you turn." you responded flatly and called on a man in a black coat.
“Do you have anything to say about Spider-man? He stopped the Hulk and thanks to him - there were no fatalities!” he said.
"Sounds like you have my answer." You shrugged before the crowd started acting up again.
"Where were the avengers?"
"Are we safe?"
"Is this the doing of a foreign government?"
"Is the country under attack?"
“Can you tell us about your thoughts on these monsters?” someone asked, you head snapped in the direction of that voice almost instantly.
“Elaborate,” you challenged, ticked off by their choice of words
“The public is only finding out now that a telepath was running around New York reeking havoc. Only when they've been finally caught." a man mentioned matter-of-fact like. "And Bruce Banner put hundreds of lives in danger today and is being sent off to a psych ward where he belongs." he adds. "Surely you have something to say about them! They've gotta answer for their crimes!” he demanded.
The crowd agreed in unison and pumped their fists in the air at his declaration. You were seeing red upon hearing their cruel words. They truly take for granted the good deeds enhanced individuals can do.
“They are not monsters and if we remember that they are people just like us - we’d speak on them with a little more humility.” You spoke with poise. "Mutants aren't the individuals we should be afraid of. Hatred shouldn't be the thing we all band together for.
Bruce Banner is the same man that was willing to lay down his life for all of us. He fought alongside my father in countless battles. He helped half of the universe return from the blip!” you reminded, the crowd dying down at your words.
"What he's done today was against his will and you all decide to paint him as the villain without getting all your facts straight!" you scoffed in astonishment at their ignorance.
"That's exactly the issue with you people and the government! You constantly keep secrets, leaving the public in the dark!" he roared.
"Has it ever occurred to any of you that keeping you all in the dark is the what's best at times? Wouldn't you rather hear that the problem was solved?" you retorted. "So you get to return to your homes and be with your loved ones? Not living in constant fear? While men and women around the world fight for your peace of mind?"
As you looked directly into every camera lens, your eyes landed on the man who was kicked up a storm just moments earlier. He gulped nervously as you leaned in, closer to the microphone.
"If you're not willing to stop hiding behind your camera equipment and put on a god damn super suit," you snipped. "You better leave saving the world to us people." your words were met with silence.
But the crowd suddenly erupted in agreement at your words. A newfound appreciation and understanding for superheroes had been successfully sown into the minds of viewers across the nation.
"Nice work, Stark." the Lieutenant chuckled, clapping you on the shoulder proudly.
You couldn't help but hope that your dad was somewhere, looking down on you, and feeling nothing but pride for his daughter.
Sorry no Peter this chapter but the next part will be filled with him!

Civilian!Peter Parker spends days indoors, finding more information on you; it almost worries you when you don’t see him on the streets or recording your fights. On the third night of you being lonely on patrol you decide the next morning if you don’t see him, you were going to his apartment and checking up on him.
The next morning you woke up, stretched and grabbed your phone to randomly scroll until you actually were ready to get up. And the first thing you see is an unread message from a random number. Did you give out your number and not remember? You hadn’t met anyone new recently. You clicked on the message and read it.
Spidey?
You stared at the message aghast, confused by its content and randomness. You contemplated texting back, did this person know your identity and you hand no idea who they were? Maybe it was some sort of prank?
Who is this?
You sent the text after a couple minutes, too anxious to send it and worried about the repercussions. Your phone buzzed.
It’s Peter! Did I scare you? 🕷️
How are you? I miss you!
You sighed as soon as you read the message but felt a small smirk fall on your face.
Peter, how did you get my number?
You watched as the text bubble popped up, went away and popped back up again as he typed.
Peter.
I mayyy have dropped a bug on you to connect to your phone.. only because I was worried about you!!!
I’m blocking you.
NO PLEASE
I swear I won’t text you
UNLESS NECESSARY
pretty please 🥺
Fine.
Thank you!!
So will you take me on your
next night patrol?
Hello?
Civilian!Peter Parker resisted all his urges to text you, he still typed the messages and deleted them just to ‘pretend’ he actually send it. He imagines how you’ll respond to him asking to come over, or him asking you to hang out and go on a date. But he knows how much it is a privilege to know you and isn’t stupid enough to text you something to so dumb.
But one night, it was in the early hours of the morning and the Spidey tracker had been planted on one place for the past two hours. You were across town and he became worried when you didn’t move. Usually it would update everything thirty minutes, and against all his gut feelings— he texted you.
Spidey?
Hello, Peter.
Hey! Sorry just checking up.
I’m fine, thank you.
Do you miss me?
Peter.
Sorry! Sorry..
…
Goodnight,Peter.
I see you typing, Peter.
I’m warning you.
Civilian!Peter Parker look around his apartment for you when his eyes landed on his window. There you were in all your glory, sitting on the roof across from him and the moon illuminated you so beautifully. A bright smile grew on his face, he waved to you and you waved back.
You look beautiful.
Thank you,Peter.
I miss you.
I know,Peter.
Have you been outside, lately?
Yeah. I went to the deli.
Can you come over?
Civilian!Peter Parker watched as the text bubble popped up then disappeared, he looked up at you and were already looking back. You were standing now, the night sky looks glorious behind you. You shook your head, and tapped on your phone a couple times before turning around and walking away.
Get some rest, Petey. Next time I see you, I wanna see those bright eyes; it’s my favorite part of the day. I miss MY Peter.
His heart thudded in his chest and he felt the tears well up in his eyes. He was tired; it felt like everything was crumbling on him but he thought he was doing good at hiding it. He typed back before heading to bed for what felt like the first time in days.
You’re my favorite part of everyday.
The next morning Peter woke up early to shower and go on a walk before the rest of the world was up. But when he opened his apartment door, a donut bag and coffee sat outside his door; a little spider drawn on the top of the white plastic coffee lid. About ten minutes later, your phone buzzed as you were taking a moments break in an ally from your patrol.
Thank you for breakfast, can’t wait to take you out to return the favor ;)
now that everyone is done watching bnd.. i’m expecting a shit ton of arachnid sensory overload! peter parker fics immediately at my desk by tomorrow morning with a side of canon compliance…
why do men get hotter whenever they’re depressed and bruised
