and to be clear: these things can coexist, im not saying they can't. it's just that with so many of the webtoons i've read, it always seems to me that when it comes down to it, the focus of a scene or panel isn't how the character feels- it's how they look.
there was this webcomic i read that was being praised for its beautiful art and visuals, and while it is incredibly visually appealing (nice colors, shading, lighting, line-art, etc) there's also something a bit... lifeless about it. the main characters never make 'ugly' expressions or poses- when they suffer, it's always in a way that we can appreciate how there's never a hair out of place or a blemish on their skin. displeasure or sadness is shown through shimmering tears and the slightest furrow of the character's brow, and nothing more. and the end result just leaves me feeling kind of detached, honestly- because at some point you stop noticing the beauty, and then what are you left with?
