Will humanity ever be free of the influence of Edna Mode? Can any of us so much as consider the character design for a hero or villain without her manifesting in the room, fully aware of our sins?
You know what, another layer of difficulty is when youâre thinking about villains, and the wise words of Megamind come into your head. You donât just want your child to be just a regular villain. But how do you make your villain a Supervillain with no cape? Where is the drama? But Edna says no capes, you must deny them the flair. It is impossible to please them both, and itâs tearing this family apart.
you. you get it.

Thank you to all the fan fic writers who wonât get a post dedicated to them today or any day. Your writing still matters, your writing is still important. Your fic touched someone, it is someones favorite fic, their comfort fic. Donât stop writing, donât ever give up. I appreciate you and your writing. Thank you for all you do.
i dont know when it happened but somewhere along the way âshippingâ got a new meaning for younger folk that seems to translate to âi want these people together for real asapâ. i think the media had something to do with it. but guys.
guys.
shipping absolutely Does Not mean demanding anything from people/creators. shipping isnât about expecting and waiting for the day it will certainly happen. it is not a direct translation to Happen Or Die.
shipping means you like the idea of two (or more) people together. you like the concept. you find it fun to imagine the dynamics. you even create fanon content of it (fic, art, edits). itâs all in your head and itâs Fine that way.
is it nice to have a ship become canon? oh my god, yes. but thatâs not what shipping is about and yall need to take a step back and breathe because being a jerk to people aint gonna change their mind about ships.
have a good night.

The water was already in the bath. It steamed but only mildly. The soap was in a little dish. The soap was shaped like a duck. He stared at the soap for a long while, sitting in the bath, waiting for his pain to lessen as per instructions. Why was the soap shaped like a duck. Was it a psychological test for the handler to give him soap shaped like a duck.

Unhappy with canon? In my fandom?
Itâs more likely thank youâd think.Â
I already had half a mind to go off about this and then a set of Eliot and Parker came across my dash from the same episode I was thinking of and that pushed me over the edge.
So letâs talk about The Big Bang Job in Leverage and something they pulled off only by nature of being Leverage because itâs practically magic tbh.
The thing about The Big Bang Job is that the climax of the episode is a gigantic, over the top shootout between one of the main characters (Eliot) and a literal warehouse full of goons with automatic weapons. And Eliot not only walks out of it without a scratch, he starts with only his fists to fight back with. Iâm talking complete and utter cheese; stormtrooper-like aim from the goons, Eliot never misses a shot, Eliot takes cover behind wooden boxes and doesnât get hit, infinite bullets, and the scene ends with Eliot sliding on his knees while spinning 360 firing all the while and hitting every single one of his remaining targets.
This scene is objectively utterly laughable, it should flop. It doesnât.Â
It doesnât because this is Eliot. Eliot, who the show is very, very careful to establish âdoesnât like gunsâ. Not, âdoesnât USE gunsâ, âdoesnât LIKE gunsâ. It has been consistent, up to this point and actually after this point, that Eliot before he met the team was not a nice person. Heâs a hitter, heâs not exactly the nicest person now, but before the team it is heavily implied that he did some nasty, assassin-esque work for an even nastier guy.Â
Heâs killed people before, for a living, and he was very good at it.
But by the time we meet him, by the time the team meets him, he is out of that line of work. He doesnât touch guns anymore, not for personal use. Every single time we see him with one on-screen itâs because heâs disarming someone else who had one and unloading it to make it useless in whatever fight is going on at the moment. Eliot doesnât like guns. Eliot doesnât use guns. And it is because that character fact is well and consistently established for three seasons before we get to The Big Bang Job that the over the top shootout is dramatically weighted instead of funny.
That scene, which should read as celebration of a gory bloodbath, is instead an extremely grim and serious character moment. This is Eliot breaking an unspoken vow; this is a promise that he made to himself and that we the audience have seen him hold himself to without fail, and we have to watch him go back on it, for the sake of his team. This is watching Eliot be the man, the monster, he believes he is, the person that he will spend the rest of his life atoning for without ever truly feeling he can have or deserves forgiveness.Â
It is the context of that character, the back story firmly in place and present in the moment he makes the decision, that makes the warehouse shootout devastatingly gutwrenching instead of what it should be.
It is the only reason Leverage gets away with it and significantly they never do it again. This is the only time we ever see this from Eliot and thatâs what gives that moment so much weight.Â
@copperbadge
This is a great meta about a really great moment in the show, and I agree with all of it. I would add that thereâs a second layer, which is that Eliot also clearly doesnât expect to survive that shootout. Heâs in a killbox and heâs making a calculated decision to sacrifice himself for the team and for a specific goal, and he makes that sacrifice after asking for a promise that the goal will be achieved.Â
So part of the gravitas comes from the fact that he goes in with just his fists and doesnât expect to make it out the other side, so heâs just looking to rip through them as far as possible to give the others a chance. Itâs a redemptive moment because itâs Eliot letting loose in direct opposition to Moreau, when probably the last time he behaved this violently was in service of Moreau.Â
Comedic aspect aside, that also explains why heâs so bouncy at the end of the San Lorenzo job, when he bursts in on Nate in bed â thatâs the ultimate closing of a loop for him, the fact that not only did he survive the previous episodeâs violence, he completed a redemption cycle. He used his violence, ultimately, to end the greatest cause of his violence. That must have been very freeing.
So I struggle badly with writing dialogue sometimes. Any tips for that?
-
My #1 tip for writing dialogue is to change paragraph every time you change speakers. Yes, even if they only say one word. That change of paragraph is a signal to the reader that a new person is talking, and not changing paragraphs makes dialogue a lot more difficult to read.Â
As for the actual words of dialogue, there are a few things that I do in my own fics which work for me. See if any of them seem like they might work for you:
pick a few slang terms or idioms that the character uses in character and use them once or twice in your fic. Careful: overdoing it could end up sounding unnatural.
which brings me to point 2: say your dialogue out loud. Or at least, play it out in your head without the narration that goes with it. Does it sound like a real conversation?Â
a way to make it sound more ârealâ is to have characters interrupt each other, or have them trail off without finishing their sentences
take into account the situation the characters are in and adjust their speech accordingly. People get more formal/casual in their speech depending on who theyâre talking to and what the purpose of the conversation is
donât feel like you need to have narration with every line. If the conversation is going back and forth really quickly, you can give a sense of that speed by just putting the dialogue text without saying âhe saidâ or âshe whisperedâ etc.Â
when you do add the narration, remember that âsaidâ is a wonderful word and great to use when it doesnât matter what tone or volume the character is using. Said is the default. Any time you use another word, that draws attention to the way the character is talking. Use that to your advantage! By using other words (shout, admonish, chide, etc) you draw your readerâs attention to that dialogue and that can be a great way to point out plot-relevant information or interactions
I could go on, but I donât want to load you down to much with my way of doing things. How about the rest of you? How do you write dialogue? And if youâre a reader, what kinds of things make you feel like the conversation was really happening?
This is all fantastic advice. Another thing to keep in mind is that people donât usually speak in more than a few sentences at a time unless theyâre explaining something detailed or especially impassioned about something. This isnât a hard and fast rule, but I try to keep it under three spoken sentences per paragraph.
Remember that different people speak differently. It seems obvious, but it can be easy to write dialogue that sounds natural in your head because itâs how you speak, but would sound ridiculous coming out of the mouth of your characters. I feel into this a lot when I was younger and my characters all sounded like teenagers even when they werenât. Keep an eye on your dialogue for slang, colloquialisms, phrasing, filler words, etc. When you are editing your work, consider how they fit the âvoiceâ of your character, the time period or geographical area, and the situation. A shy character or someone talking to a âsuperiorâ in period piece may make use of the passive voice, avoidant phrasing, etc. even if they are more forwards with friends and family. A gruff character may sound softer talking to their spouse and kids than they would to co-workers. Character voice can also be purposely used to show intent and hidden (in universe) characteristics. Maybe the questionable love interest speaks pleasantly to the main character but rudely to service staff. The character hiding a their past may slip up and use slang or terminology they shouldnât know when under duress.Â
to all my writer friends out there.
LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK.Â
use âsaidâ if you donât want to draw attention to the dialogue tag. peopleâs eyes kinda glide over the word while still consciously absorbing who is saying what. only use alternatives if there is something specific you want to emphasize about how they say it, i.e. saying âspatâ to indicate intense vitriol or âgruntedâ to show physical strain.
Habits, Tics, Stims, Compulsions, and Behaviors
You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You do. You feel no ill effects aside from maybe disappointment at having to stop. You tap your foot often. This is a habit.
You are tapping your foot, whether you want to or not. Someone asks you to stop. You canât. If you try to it feels like holding in a sneeze and the pressure builds up. It might come out in a different, even less controllable action. This is a tic.
You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You do, but immediately feel worse physically or emotionally. It was a way for you to express yourself and how you feel. You may feel pressure. This is a stim.
You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You canât, because if you do something bad will happen, possibly some specific bad thing. You know itâs irrational, but not doing it gives you anxiety. This is a compulsion.
You are tapping your foot. Someone asks you to stop. You canât, because if you do this specific bad thing will happen. It is not irrational to you, although it is to others. This is an erratic/disorganized behavior.
ao3 is a gift to humanity and we'll never be able to repay or thank the support team enough
Hey btw, another worldbuilding thing: You can, and actually should have weird and impractical cultural things. Theyâre not inherently unrealistic, for as long as you address the realistic consequences as well.
Letâs say youâve got a city where thereâs tame white doves everywhere. Theyâre not pests, theyâre regarded as sacred, holy protectors of the city, and the whole city cares for them and feeds them like theyâre pets. Theyâre so tame because itâs a social taboo to hurt or scare one. Nice pretty doves :)
Then someone points out that even if theyâre not seen as pests, doesnât having a completely unchecked feral pigeon population - that not only isnât being culled, but actively fed and cared for - mean that there would be bird shit absolutely all over the place?
A part of you wants to say no, because these are your nice, pretty doves. To explain that thereâs a reason why theyâre not shitting all over the place, maybe theyâre super-intelligent and specifically bred and trained to not shit all over the place. The logistics of how, exactly, could anyone breed and train a flock of feral birds go unaddressed.
An even worse solution would be to not have those birds, editing them out of the world. No, they spark joy, you canât just toss them out!
Now, consider: Yes, yes they would, but the city also has an extensive public sanitation service thatâs occupied 90% of the time by cleaning bird shit off of everything. One of the most common last names in the area actually translates to âone who scrapes off dove shitâ, and itâs a highly respected occupation. And thanks to the sheer necessity of constantly regularly cleaning everything, the city enjoys a much higher standard of cleanliness, and less public health issues caused by poor public sanitation.
The doves do protect the city. By shitting fucking everywhere.
