We have to teach linearity because, before a child learns to read, direction doesn't matter in what they see. The child can look at pictures from right to left or left to right or up to down, they can look at their world from right to left or left to right; it isn't until they enter school that they have to learn English texts are read from left to right, and this is difficult for them.
