I wish the best of success to any and all of you fighting for your rights right now, including (but not limited to) Sex workers, workers that are in their country illegally, and those forced to work in slavery in the prison system or otherwise. ❤️

I myself am privileged enough to live in a country where a lot of us get the day off, so I'll be using this free time to join some good old fashioned protesting.

Ironically, a lot of the actual working class people here still have to work. Otherwise, who would deliver the goods and services for those more privileged people who are trying to enjoy their day off??

In truth, around here this day is mostly an excuse to picnic and get drunk in the park, and for center-left politicians to peacock around and pretend they're real socialists.

My sympathies and support to anyone out there using the day for actual activism. ❤️

There’s actually a lot of history regarding the development writing systems and why there are different visual representations of numerals, but the short answer is: it’s regional, and you probably picked up how to make your numbers look based on your parents or your primary school teachers

I do it out of spite because in grade school a kids detective story identified the culprit by saying NO American wrote their sevens with a line and I thought that was super flimsy evidence and it made me so mad I started putting a line through my sevens so the fictional detective would be wrong and then kept doing it for several decades since.

the twist at the end of this episode gives away SFA's viewpoint really clearly, and i think that viewpoint is one of the defining features of this era of star trek:

the federation supply ship firing on civilians seeking aid, and the federation being on trial for that, is an obvious way for the show to comment on the us military and the harm it does. to then reveal that the particular incident being discussed was actually a complete misunderstanding where the federation actually didn't even fire a single shot is a wild piece of propaganda.

the earlier trek shows presented the federation as an idealized, utopian version of humanity that had evolved past the kinds of mistakes it had made and most of its systemic flaws, including those of the united states in particular. when those shows wanted to comment on the present-day us and/or its military, they had some other planet/group be the us stand-in, so the federation could go "wow that's fucked up, can you believe we used to do that, too? glad that's over." the idealism defined it, and the idea was that humanity could be better than it is someday. star trek was explicitly a future beyond the united states. (not saying trek always succeeded in portraying this, but that's what it was clearly aiming for.)

nutrek, however, knows that audiences are less idealistic now, so the depiction of the federation has gotten less utopian. the burn is the in-universe justification for this, but i think it started before that point in discovery. everyone knows the federation is based on the us, and everyone knows what the us actually does, but also the federation is still supposed to be the good guys. sfa in particular seems to say, "the utopian idealized future version of humanity is basically the same as the us we have today, just big enough to oppress multiple planets at a time." but then the one specific example of federation military brutality that they talk about in this episode--this entire season--turns out to not have been their fault at all. but it was totally believable to everyone in the room, in the galaxy, that the federation fired on a starving mining colony. there had to be other incidents just as damning to the federation that can't be fuckin columbo'd away.

sfa is drawing stronger parallels between the federation and the us than previous treks did, and there are two things this could mean: one is that they're saying that the united states is much better than it actually is, and the other is that the idealized version of humanity is closer to our present reality than it used to be shown as. nutrek is lowering the ceiling of its aspirations for our future and at the same time raising the floor of its perception of our present.

Funny that people are complaining about this new episode not being released last week, saying that a grief and trauma episode should've been directly after the episode that caused the grief and trauma... Hmm, guys do you know grief and trauma last like a really long time?

Consider that giving a gap episode helps ground the trauma and grief even more because it implies more time has passed and the kids are still not alright. Consider how it deepens the Sam storyline because it implies she's been suffering from the physical manifestations of her trauma for that long, and that's what makes it believable that she's in grave danger since they set up the hint that something was really wrong in the previous episode. Consider that the previous episode was necessary to set up the new Tarima storyline.

It's just funny to see people complain about a creative decision that's the result of objectively good storytelling. Yes, there was a gap episode. Yes, life goes on when you're grieving and traumatized. Yes, you eventually have to deal with it. That's how life works, so that's how it was written.

Oh wow.

I just watched the newest episode of Starfleet Academy, and, wow.

Ending genuinely brought a tear to my eye, and I can't remember the last time any piece of media did that. Tears don't come easy to me in general. (Part of that is also that I am processing other stuff right now that is making me especially emotional, but still)

In general the series is good so far. It's got that Star Trek spirit. It's hopeful despite hardship, it's looking forward, even when it's referencing the past.

But this episode in particular was spectacular. It's a big love letter to DS9, and to Avery Brooks in particular, which already earns it strong points, but it also does it, I feel, without falling into that sorta stale fanservice-y nostalgia that some of the newer treks have been guilty of.

Idk, I guess it just made me happy, and I wanted to share that. And if any of my like 5 followers take my recommendation and give Starfleet Academy a try, all the better.

My room did have a lock but my parents wouldn't let me have the key, so at some point when I was around 13 and started to care more about my privacy, I essentially taught myself to lockpick in order to be able to lock myself in.

I started studying (history and sociology of) religion at university a couple of years ago (I dropped out after a few semesters but i still pursue the topic as a hobby) And people always want me to have some profound reason why.

(Now I have some spiritual beliefs, sort of an agnostic with benefits, but I'm not religious in any traditional sense.)

Like, it's either "How can you study all these contradicting religions and still believe/Why would you as a believer study this subject which critiques your beliefs?".

Or it's "How can you not be swayed into becoming "religious for real" by all these accounts of how humans have believed for millennia/Why would you study this if you don't believe in it?"

And I'm always just like, why does it have to be like that? Can't I just find this unique and insanely impactful part of human culture interesting on it's own?

I don’t really know why I’m responding, since I know you’re not operating in good faith.

But for anyone who reads this and is confused, intersectionality is about how different axes of oppression overlap, and, yes, create a unique form of oppression.

However, and this is critical, there have to be At Least Two forms of oppression overlapping. If you have ever been in a car, yoi have likely come upon an intersection where two roads meet. The roads do not magically stop existing where they meet; they just overlap.

Now, can anyone find the two overlapping identities that supposedly create a unique form of oppression in “trans man”?

It seems rather odd to me to *want* to distinguish hatred against trans men so sharply from other forms of transphobia? As if you're deliberately trying to distance your identity from other trans people.

Like, of course transphobia manifests in different ways against different people, but it all boils down to not respecting gender identities, right? For comparison, racists use a myriad of different techniques of oppression against a myriad of different ethnicities, but it's all still racism innit?
