The most chilling thing about Primus saying that he sees no utility in commoners is that I absolutely believe that it's not only true, but also a guiding principle of his goals. In his perfect world, commoners have been wiped out, pressed into mindless servitude in death to toil on behalf of his imperial family's needs while bolstering their arcane power simply through their existence, which in his eyes is, considering his daughters' differences in opinion and the knowledge that he is relatively cash and land poor compared to the rest of the houses, the only power that means anything, and therefore the only power worth caring about. We see it also in his pursuit of every soul in death—the Drowned Men take great pains to evade this subjugation, and it is a point of frustration that Thjazi, a man who, with no detours in mind, would've likely walked the Old Path, has escaped their purview. If there is no utility in commoners for Primus—something that even Tansul seems not to have believed—it is because a population of the dead is utterly more under his control than can be said about the living. That this subjugation would be absolute and inescapable is wholly the point—I would venture to guess that in Primus's eyes, the Shapers greatest mistake was allowing for their subjects the capacity to have their own wills, which was the reason in the end that they were destroyed. Can the dead, once enslaved by the house of death, rebel?
The other noble houses, on the other hand, are worth something alive, of course, not only because this kind of absolute control would likely be less sweet without at least a few willing subjects, but also because the other thing Primus does seem to care about is the proliferation of his own house. We see this in the knowledge that without heirs on the horizon, Petra and Ryah have been passed over as prime inheritors, and the idea that House Royce is expendable and unworthy; given his concerns about his mundane son, Primus likely only cares about ensuring his descendants retain this arcane might that he believes necessary to rule.
The world that House Tachonis strives for is one in which life is only worth anything if it empowers their house alone. Thus far we know the most about the circumstances of the peoples shaped by three gods: Tansul, Azgra, and Sylandri, and Primus's aims echo each one in some way. Tansul, his own house's former master, is the obvious, in his imperial goals. Given the literal army of the dead that he is said to be amassing, this is his echo of Azgra. Yet the potential of this plan mirrors Sylandri's measure of control perhaps most acutely of all; the dead, in their impotence—their lack of will and inability to proliferate themselves—would be subjects that could be only what their rulers wish them to be. But where the goddess of life, such as she was, never withheld her people's will, a lord of the dead in this manner would correct her only mistake.
This is also extremely clear in the specific threat the Old Path poses to House Tachonis, why they are such a major threat to them. Both factions act, in a certain way, as psychopomps, of course, but as we've seen, the Old Path isn't concerned with death as such; they're concerned with reincarnation, and the cycles of renewal and rebirth. Death is a step in that cycle, and should not be discounted, but it is only a step. To subjugate the dead, even to remain in the throes of death, is anathema to the Old Path, and in the same vein, House Tachonis in their horrific plans cannot abide the cycles of life.
The funniest part of A New Hope is that Luke Skywalker is a 19 year old who has not locked in yet and plays with toys and sleeps in his childhood bedroom at his aunt and uncle’s house and Leia Organa is a 19 year old with a mission to save the galaxy from fascism. Luke has never left his hometown, Leia just watched her planet be blown up. He’s peeved his uncle is asking him to do his chores, she’s imprisoned for resisting the government. You relate to them both but they’re on complete opposite sides of the 19 year old life stage spectrum.

okay so, the writer part of me thinks that Teor's death works as a narrative beat in a way that gets better and better the more I look at it. Funnily enough, yesterday at the intro I was thinking to myself how unlikely it was for all 13 of our main characters to survive the main story -though I'll admit I was not happy to be proven correct so soon-, but the moment where this death arrives fits really well within the story the entire cast has been weaving:
It marks the end of the first act, for everyone, shows exactly what the stakes are, how difficult it really is to go toe to toe with the Sundered Houses, and how no one is fully safe from them. Brennan says that the last leader of the Torn Banner has fallen, right as the Schemers have painted and created a new revolutionary figure to follow (even Primus mentions and acknowledges this). Cyd was all but finished, and Teor had promised him earlier that, no matter what, wherever they would go next, they'd go together. It even comes full circle with Julien's decision, to leave Teor to his fate a second time, this occasion with devastating consequences. Within the narrative, it makes so much sense, and bringing him back in the next episode or so would, unless in certain specific circumstances, probably make it feel cheap.
All that being said, however, the fan part of me cried so much at losing one of her favourite characters that I need him back immediately, doesn't matter how. please and thank you.
I keep thinking how there's so much STUFF happening in the Underworld and it's like we're only seeing the very tip of the iceberg. All the way back to the overture, we've seen massive disturbances and only been aware of them as they surface to briefly interact with the living world, like the very tip of one flipper of a whale seen breaking the surface of the water as the whale swims under a boat. I've been thinking the only way to REALLY investigate what the Tachonises are up to down there is to go there. and now Teor has. It would be so cool if we start to see cold opens with Teor and Cyd exploring the Tenebral Reaches and working the Tachonis problem from that end. One last campaign for the Torn Banner, one last mission of freedom for these lost souls.
RIP Teor, you died but your light lives on.

Each time he's told someone about Aetheon, Wick has dropped in a monotone mention that filament is tattooed on his face, and the implications are pretty awful. The product of his family's torture basement is in his skin and he can't get it out. The Creed's iconography is on his skin and he can't get it off. Could it ever be covered, glowing as it is, by normal ink? It's so prominent, too. Wick's connection to a fake religion is the most visible thing about him no matter what he wears. People's feelings about the Creed color their interactions with him no matter what he says or does. Wick's negative feelings about the Creed must color his interactions with reflective surfaces. His grandmother is right: there's nowhere he can go to get away. Occtis is easy to sympathize with because he is walking evidence that his family did something terrible to him, and I hope it gets highlighted (so to speak) that Wick is as well.
the Vaelus and Azune scene is so funny because they're two characters who thematically mirror each other so well, particularly when it comes to the exact emotion that Vaelus is dealing with as she decides to shatter the Stone of Nightsong, that they do intuitively understand how to connect in this scene, but since they have absolutely no history with each other, what happened from her perspective was the virtual stranger she witnessed having a complete breakdown yesterday walked out of the woods, asked her what she wanted, said a word in an ancient tongue, summoned a fucking supposedly mythical dragon (not a metaphor) to finish the spirit bridge, and when that was settled, awkwardly asked her if she was coming back to watch the play. outstanding. I love C4.
