Oliver being a woman instead is such an interesting concept because I feel like things could have gone way different in that scenario. Anyways, your Farleigh fic was very enjoyable to read :)
thanks so much for reading i’m so glad u liked it! & yes i love the concept. while we’d def lose some elements of story that barry’s character had like how interesting oliver and farleigh’s relationship was, but it would be super interesting to see that pan out differently. like the relationship between venetia and a woman first of all (i may have just wanted to see her kiss a lady) & felix def wouldn’t have been as mad about it i think, honestly i think he’d be more upset abt her hooking up w farleigh. and bc women are sooooo often socialized to be receptive and accommodating to other’s needs/feelings/wants/etc they learn to fit in faster bc it becomes an intuitive skill, one i personally think oliver doesn’t possess and that’s why he’s forced to be so calculated. i’m not saying these things are exclusive to women and men obvi but it’s a lot more prominent so it would’ve been cool to see a character who had moments like ollie where their etiquette was incorrect but who was still able to smooth things over and could fake the family out a little bit better. like not totally fool them (farleigh would def still be able to see right thru it but he’d have a harder time finding ways to embarrass or insult them) and we could’ve seen how ollie’s plan would’ve panned out had felix not found out about the parent lie.
i have a continuation in the works sooo i’ll get to expand on that warning it will be freaky nasty but that’s kinda what my blog’s here for lol.
okay i wanna think on this.
"the relationship between venetia and a woman first of all ... & felix def wouldn’t have been as mad about it i think, honestly i think he’d be more upset abt her hooking up w farleigh." it's quickly made clear by venetia that felix's reason for being upset is out of possessiveness. venetia is fetishized and judged for her sexuality. in the same way that felix discusses farleigh's sexcapades with teachers, there is no empathy or understanding in regard to her or farleigh's sexuality. we, as viewers, understand that venetia was sexually driven by her insecurity. we, as viewers, should reasonably understand that any scenario where a teacher is having sexual relations with a student is abusive. neither felix nor his parents seem to understand or acknowledge the tragedy of venetia and farleigh's actions. understanding that leads me to think that venetia having a sexual relationship with another woman, especially one that "belongs" to felix, would genuinely freak felix out. it would be another level of sexual deviancy.
another interesting thing. felix hadn't even implied that he was "mad" at venetia, he was more-so mad at oliver. he was embarrassed by venetia. felix isn't mad at venetia because he, along with their parents, think that venetia lacks any agency or self-control. she just can't help herself. she's easy. perhaps the most interesting aspect of f!oliver, in that regard, would be how felix would see oliver. whether felix would consider oliver as having any agency. which leads me to another point you made, about oliver being able to slip into the catton family even more subtly. (just to add, felix sees farleigh's sexual relations in an entirely opposite way. venetia, as a white woman, is easily seen as having no control or agency over her choices. her sexuality is "masochistic," "incontinent." by contrast, farleigh, as a black man, is considered to have entire agency. his sexual relationships with authority figures are his fault, highlighted by the fact that he was expelled numerous times instead of a teacher being fired.)
women are very often considered a non-threat. this is for many reasons, all of which i'm sure we're aware. and, as much as it pains some viewers to acknowledge, felix is (at least mostly) heterosexual. there is a sense of ambiguity, sure, and the viewer can interpret felix's feelings about oliver in a lot of different ways. but if oliver was a girl... man i have no idea how that would work. it's boys, that felix brings back to saltburn. felix isn't indicated to have any long-lasting, close relationships with women. like, i just don't know how that would go over. would felix have been sexually attracted to oliver? would felix have been drawn to the chase of oliver? i think the way in which emerald wrote the characters sort of makes it sort of impossible to imagine the endless possibilities of f!oliver.
one of the most fascinating aspects of saltburn is its representation of different modes of privilege. i've talked about it extensively cuz i just eat that shit up. f!oliver would throw the entire intricate power dynamic off. no longer would oliver have the same power over venetia and farleigh. no longer would oliver be obsessed with felix for the exact same reasons. it would twist most of oliver's motivations, actually. my question is, if oliver had been a woman... would venetia have even wanted oliver? would oliver have been able to manipulate venetia, who cared so much about male validation? farleigh... that would be interesting. white woman tears scenario, there. bold commentary and a vastly more complicated dynamic than a white man and a black man. lorddd, this is truly an interesting thing to think about. i'm just rambling, though.
nooo pls keep going this is so interesting and so well thought out and i’m hanging onto every word u say, trust u clocked me in this bc i was so hell bent on seeing the tension between the og oliver and felix even tho ik it’s all in my head.
but another reason i didn’t rlly comment on f!oliver and felix is cuz, as u said felix obviously doesn’t have close relationships w women!!! like maybe aside from his mom and venetia deep down, every woman we see him with is just another of his ‘toys’ as venetia puts it. i don’t know if we ever got her name but the girl oliver hooked up with when felix ditched her is a prime example of that! almost all of his interactions w women revolved around sexuality unless they were in his family. we also never really hear of him dating so i think emerald establishes in the movie w many scenes felix has always been more of a playboy to than a lover of women. like yes he’s straight but i think he’d be miserable married and i think he’d only do it bc he felt like he had to.
but that is what went into my thinking about felix, i think with those values felix isn’t going to see a relationship w venetia as a threat if it were a woman because felix probably isn’t going to ecknowledge the gravity of it because he has no reference for understanding wlw relationships except for what is in popular media. and especially in the 2000’s the only wlw representation that most people were seeing was a sensationalized version of it, made for the sake of men, and usually these acts would still be performed by straight women. (i’m thinking making out with your girlfriends in a bar so guys can watch, ‘i kissed a girl’ by katy perry era, and all the fake lesbian p*rn that was gaining to much traction back then). felix can see this lack of agency not only in venetia but in f!oliver and i think that would affect the way he sees the validity of the relationship and if anything he’s going to brush it off as ‘experimentation’ and just wouldn’t believe it to be as serious as a woman and man or an mlm relationship. almost as though he believes that men should like women, so it makes sense for a woman to be interested in women. because that’s what he would chalk it up to, and interest or curiosity rather than a desire or a choice to be together.
but if felix had invited a woman to saltburn, it’s not going to be because they’re just that close, but because he’s interested in her. that was kind of my thinking w farleigh, because a huge theme of saltburn is how much farleigh depends on the catton’s and based on the conversation they had about ‘the begging bowl’ i could see felix being upset at yet another thing farleigh is taking from them without asking. and i think the fact that felix perceives farleigh as having total agency in even abusive situations, he’d see farleigh as being in complete control of taking one of his ‘toys’ from him rather than farleigh being manipulated by f!oliver.
i think felix is a very interesting character to think about in this situation because with m!oliver we get to see felix through his eyes, and even though mostly we see felix as a character who’s put on a pedestal because of his kindness towards oliver, we still get glimpses of the fact felix is still racist, misogynistic, and classist. with f!oliver i think we’d get to delve into those darker sides of felix a bit, and he wouldn’t have the cleaner image of him we get from m!oliver.
i think the chase theory is really interesting with f!oliver because it would changes oliver’s motivations so much like you said. like oliver’s plan was kind of just, to be there as much as he could until felix just kind of accepted him. like as long as oliver could get his foot in the door he knew he could make things work (at least for a little while) i think an f!oliver has the chance to take an entirely different approach, playing hard to get. doing things they know will make felix want them and driving him crazy because he just can’t put his finger on what he needs to do to win them over.
and i think f!oliver’s manipulation of venetia could’ve been so different because m!oliver preys on venetia’s need for male validation, so in a way, it’s not about him at all. he’s just a man who happens to be on his knees for her. now hear me out, i think venetia would’ve been jealous of f!oliver and felix more than anything. i think for her, inviting boys is one thing because it’s expected, but i know she’d have such a hard time with her family fawning over the fact felix finally brought a girl home.
she knows he doesn’t deserve the respect he’s getting (especially from his male elders), like she knew m!oliver wasn’t getting the respect he deserved from felix and it would just be worse for f!oliver. i think f!oliver could prey on that, that maybe if venetia shows her the attention she gets from felix then the catton’s will finally respect her like they respect felix. or she’d just be better than felix simply by treating f!oliver better than her brother does. they’d be able to carry the relationship longer and i think we could even see some emotional entanglement. god this and then the new layers of nuance it would provide in the tub scene??? i think it would tear me in two.
honestly i couldn’t really see f!oliver being obsessed with felix like in the original because he’s not going to have that ‘bro’ bond with them. but i very much think a f!oliver would be able to use their sexuality against venetia and farleigh in ways m!oliver couldn’t. especially the point about farleigh and white women’s tears. i mean getting him kicked out of saltburn could’ve gone sooo differently, and you know none of it would be recorded anywhere because people of that financial caliber prefer to take care of things ‘in house’.
like a lot of things you mentioned would make it so much harder for a woman to infiltrate saltburn in the same way m!oliver did, but they’d have so many abilities he didn’t, i am obsessed with pondering this. anyway you are super cool and honestly probably understand this material a lot better than i do (so this is mainly for entertainment purposes lol) but thanks for replying i love how u expanded on this you’re very intelligent <3
GAH sorry for making this thread so long but you are ABSOLUTELY so cool and real. thank you for expanding so much, i completely understand and agree with you.
like you expressed, some of those power dynamics would be so so fun to play with. one thing that i'm thinking about now is f!oliver's motivation... like, in canon, i interpreted the underlying motivation for oliver as his need to obtain the privilege he doesn't have. oliver is willing to use any position of privilege that he does have against venetia and farleigh, but felix is an uncontrollable, unobtainable object of jealousy and desire. f!oliver would have such an insane spin. the core of the film is to create the sense that oliver is grossly delusional and ambitious and greedy and on and on and on. he's ungrateful of what he has. in the same sense, f!oliver could play into this in a much more controversial way. f!oliver would be another step below felix, not only financially but now on a patriarchal level. the viewers would have a stronger inclination to root for f!oliver, in a sort of fem fatale way. think, "gone girl."
f!oliver and venetia would be a way to explore this concept of competition between women under the oppressive nature of patriarchy. f!oliver and farleigh would be a way to explore the power that white women have historically held over black men, and vice versa (two historically ambiguous power dynamics... dude). the stakes would be higher with f!oliver. people in this fandom seem sort of unaware of how low the saltburn stakes were, comparatively, to a lot of real-life situations. f!oliver would be so ambiguous, so dirty, so raw, even more-so than m!oliver. hehehahhaf. like, the uncomfortable nature of saltburn would be amplified SO much. it would also strip away the sort of escapist fantasy that many people have towards mlm; a largely hetero-centric film about power, class, privilege? viewers would have a much harder time ignoring their discomfort, i think. for the same reasons that a lot of people prefer queer "enemies to lovers" and such.
Oliver being a woman instead is such an interesting concept because I feel like things could have gone way different in that scenario. Anyways, your Farleigh fic was very enjoyable to read :)

the plus size reader blurb you wrote was useless. ‘cute little ass’ talking about a plus sized reader and at online did you mention that the reader was plus sized. really POOR work from you icl.
okay yeah i am so sorry i didn’t feel great abt posting it either and i changed the line cuz that was literally so grossly misplaced i should not have posted that without realizing how that sounded?? i was going for ‘little’ in a way that was adjacent to ‘tight’ but that’s so totally on me for not taking that out before i posted it.
im trying not to ramble ah but i spent some time reading plus sized fics to see what else i did wrong and in most other fics i found the fact the reader is plus sized is only mentioned if the plot revolved around them being plus sized and those fics were all about the reader being insecure in their bodies which i’m not gonna be posting about for many reasons.
im also hesitant to use physical descriptors because those aren’t one size fits all and making any mention of being plus-sized feels hollow to me unless it’s like essential to the plot or something because plus-sized people’s existence doesn’t revolve around their body type. it felt weirder to me to try and write something super specific because i can’t pretend i understand the experience and everyone is different so the more specific i get the more i alienate people who i’m trying to include. it also did not feel right mentioning it anywhere because the request/plot didn’t call for the reader’s size to be mentioned, just that the reader was that size.
of course, as u pointed out, i most definitely failed at trying to write neutral bodies in my recent blurb i absolutely should have been more careful and thoughtful. i take full responsibility and blame for that cuz that’s on me, and ur so right anon that was very poor work on my part. i will be reading more and educating myself to see where i can do better to be inclusive without being completely neutral as to be more inclusive in my writing and be way more careful checking my works from now on so i don’t make a mistake like this again and offend anyone because i truly want anyone and everyone to be able to enjoy what i write.
again i am deeply sorry if you were affected by my last post, while i can assure that being negative about any body type was not my intent nor is that reflective of my own feelings, my impact was just that and that is my fault and i am so sorry if you or anyone else was hurt by my words. thank you for the criticism anon.
could u do the couch scene with oliver and farleigh except its reader and farleigh? and just kind of expand on that scene please🤭

Somehow, it’s the least of your worries.” this PERFECTLY articulates that tension and sense of “should we be doing this?” UGHHH OH MY GODD
