Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 broke apart in July 1992 and the fragments collided with Jupiter beginning on July 16, 1994. For the first time, humans directly observed a collision between two bodies in the solar system. The largest fragment, Fragment G, released energy estimated at 600 times the combined yield of every nuclear weapon on Earth.

The impact craters were more pronounced than scientists had thought they would be, and were visible to amateur telescopes for months. A black spot was created by the impacts, the Scar of Jupiter, roughly the size of the Pacific Ocean.

The event significantly advanced research into planetary defense.
