Important Info:
-> This Jim Gordon is in an AU where it is currently pre-bat signal, meaning pre-batfamily or anything of the likes. Barbara has yet to become batgirl, the batman is an urban myth, and GCPD has yet to decide if they should silently arrest the batman without the public knowing or let the truth out.

My main inspo for Jim comes from Batman: Black Mirror, Batman: Year One, Batman: Night Cries, the Arkham trilogy, and many misc comics here and there. Jim is my ALL TIME favorite DC character and I hope I do him a little justice as the depressing hardboiled man he is.
I woke up a little earlier than usual this afternoon. So many night shifts, you start to enjoy the small times of rest you have. I think Iāve been getting better with sleep, or I thought at least. I sleep better than I should, thatās for damn sure. Iāve been thinking about what Barbara told me the other day and sheās right, as always. Having all my thoughts rattling around in my brain hasnāt been doing me any good these past few days.
Itās been about 27 days since Motherās Day, which already has its own special kind of oddness. I already had to call in after promising Barbara take her to Kentucky to see the derby, any surprise there was a hostage situation when I promised to go with her to Chicago? Iām bound to break the promises I make, feels like that more often than not. You fail a kid by failing a marriage, I suppose. She never got to really know the Barbara she was named after.
I think the hardest part of any crisis situation isnāt exactly the subduing but rather having the meet the victims afterwards. Iāve learned over the years how to comfort those Iāll maybe never see again, I learned from going through that hell myself, I learned because I realized these people gotten so used to this hell that being apart of it was more a shock than hearing about it. The report said 12 hostages, 3 infants in their midsts. And, well, Iām not all that used to commissioner work staying in an office. When I heard they were keeping familiesā single mothers and their kids, even. Widows, teenage girls, already in their own personal hell let alone Gotham. Always made me think about Barbara in Chicago on her own, after our split. We never got a proper divorce, for a long time I thought we would. But it never happened, we just decided to separate until I was done with Gotham and ready to go back. But I never really was done, Loeb kept running for anything and cops kept turning blind eyes and Iād find insubordination unpunished daily. And maybe a part of being was relieved I had to go in for Motherās Day.
We lost one of the babies in the hostage situation. No more than 5 months old, his mother was 17 and had been kicked out of her house for her pregnancy. She had been living in the Narrows with a few prostitutes in the red light district, which led us to a few culprits with east side. The man who kept them hostage made a good deal to keep his tracks clean with little evidence. His one mistake was keeping the witnesses alive. Still, it was surreal to hold a limp baby in your arms. Had it been James, would I still held him as tightly if he hadnāt survived the fall? Of course, Iād jump over the bridge a thousand times over for him. You just get to thinking sometimes and you canāt stop thinking.
Anyways, Fatherās Day is coming up soon and I donāt know if I should make another promise and hope really hard itāll happen or to keep to myself. Just making it through one day at a time.
