The time has come to admit defeat. I already know this about myself— I’m no good at multiple accounts. But since I do still want to develop Dési further and play with all you guys, I’ve decided to remake him as a sideblog.       Roxy has been told an infuriatingly low amount about her contact. She’s at Gare de Lyon in Paris, waiting to meet up with the French secret service, but her mission file gave the scantest of details. To risk compromising her, of course. Maybe it’s all in her mind, but it seems to her that Kingsman and its equivalent entities are far more worried about a woman spilling top secrets than they are any of their men. All this hardly matters, anyway, for when someone grabs her arm, she immediately reacts. He’s hardly had time to say “Pardon me, mademoiselle,” before her fist connects with his cheek. It’s not the most devastating punch she’s ever thrown, but certainly enough to ward off an attacker.

     Training could only account for so much. If reflexes didn’t also play their part, an agent was... well, ‘in trouble’ was putting it mildly, but of course if the discrepancy was too wide they would never have made agent at all. Neither was true of the man coded as Guignolet (in what the English cheekly called “the French Kingsman,” as if to thumb their noses at their Gaulish colleagues). Well-trained by the agency as well as doing many of his own stunts, the man was swift in reacting. Not enough to prevent collision entirely, but at least to deflect the force.

     “Careful, that’s my best cheek.” Delivered in complete deadpan.

Whiskey’s smile was a thin one as the guy kept talking. He could be diplomatic when he wanted to be, but the very presence of the guy threatened to bring the worst out of him. He dropped all attempts to be more courteous than he had to be for business’s sake. Were he really an asshole, he’d conduct their meeting entirely in French.

“Our contract will take one of my junior agents is undercover. She gotta go through Calais and maybe Paris. Normally wouldn’t be a problem in the old days, but I hear y’all stepped up your security lately, so her goods ain’t gonna be easy to get past the normal channels. We’re open to couriers or other suggestions. Don’t wanna involve Kingsman unless it is absolutely necessary.”

The razor-thin distinction was lost on Dési— or as he would be known to the American, code name Guignolet. Whiskey’s casual yet brash attitude grated on his nerves after hardly five minutes. He craved excitement, not torture. That this was somehow both, and also painted with the limiting veneer of the profession (if not professionality) made it just bearable. He still would have labeled Whiskey an asshole.

Then again, who was to say it wasn’t a compliment of sorts? Neither country was known for courtesy; if the rashness got things done, he wasn’t going to say a word against it. He just wasn’t bound to enjoy it either. He nodded. “I think we might have something for you. She’s American? Have her travel in the wine business. Regardless of quality, you do make what is generously called wine. And if she connects through us, she has a natural path to Paris if she needs it.” Their main headquarters, after all, was just outside the city, in the guise of a winery.

“Underwhelming, if I’m being honest.” His lips barely twitched at his own terrible pun. He leaned one gloved hand against the desk between them, lowering himself a little more to catch the man’s eye.

“But to be serious for a moment, what do you have on the drug runner? Don’t want to step on any more toes than necessary this time around. At least that’s the story my organization’s sticking to.”

A wry smile ensued, something between amusement and defense. “That’s fair.” There was no point denying reality. One could only make the best of it. For Dési, that meant ignoring it as much as possible. Whatever he told himself otherwise, people didn’t look to short people instinctively for solutions and he did have his pride.

What he couldn’t make up for in height he made up for in memory. At least with important things. He could only say where he’d left his coffee half the time. “Wise, considering it was your organization making all the clumsy dance moves.” Any attack he made on the ally wasn’t personal, just as he would assume of the reverse. “Last time. With coordination we have a chance to avoid such a... cock-up.” (He probably savored that word a little too much.) “The main thing is, we know he’s operating in Paris and we’d rather he didn’t.”

     Prime proof that he’s no saint: he’s enjoying this all too much. Not because it’s at someone else’s expense though; she just happens to be collateral damage. La pauvre! Once the ephemeral pleasure passes, a matter of seconds, this sentiment of camaraderie returns. “I do know.” As close as he’ll come to admitting he’s been in her place before. “And I hate to see a lady struggle.”

His solo raised eyebrow asked loudly, ‘isn’t it obvious?’ before he answered with words. “Your opinion. I assume you have one... right or wrong. I’d like to know yours so I can argue with you.” Despite the wording, this still had an air of amiable invitation, even delivered with a smile.
