I looooove love love the color fill tool to help me block stuff out concept wise, but BOY does it also enable my bad habits when it comes to fundamental sketch errors like anatomy or perspective.

rough drafts for some drake studies/explorations im trying where they got progressively more snake like for a story idea ive been incubating.

Image 1 was me trying out a running/raptor like dragon, where their wing limbs end up stumpier and more armored like, figured they'd just run at and ram things and bludgeon them with punches from the armored wings, and defend a delicate rib cage system with the arms as shields. I was thinking 7 foot tall so it would still be able to enter indoors, but also encumbered by a tight environment. Potentially one rider, or pulling a cart/sled with a harness system between the upper four limbs. Image 2 i was thinking of "Cuter" design, still trying for flightless runner, potentially floating/bouncing with magic. Channeled my inner horse girl for the jaw anatomy, and made the size noticeably bigger, to accomodate multiple riders compared to the "one and only rider" a lot of stories have. I liked imagining them with a scrunched up back, and short limbs like a ferret mobility wise, but skittish and quick to scatter. One main rider directly behind the head gripping to the top horns, potentially a sling seat binded to the bottom set of horns to keep them stable, but would get in the way of the neck undulating and scrapped. Image 3 I was curious about fluffy but menacing dragons. I liked the idea of styling the dragon in human culture to mark them as claimed and attaching beads and such to use as a form of currency specific to the dragons in human society. Still maintaining hope for horns, but struggling to imagine them being used in a fight scenario with another dragon.

Image 4 is more fluffy dragon exploration, with purple spiky one being based off of dolphins face, and still attached to the big fish eyes and some form of horns in eyebrow ridges. Distantly remembered a video of an aquatic viper that had managed to become completely engulfed in moss, and played with that idea. Movement wise fully aquatic in nature, breeching and peeking through the surface is appealing to me visually, so trying a more snake like vibe. "Rider" would be a very sarcastic way to describe being transported by these, as they dragged you every which way. Lots of regular people would be put off by their movement causing motion sickness.

Image 5 is definitely more eel like in design, with all limbs becoming vestigial spikes along their stomach. tried turning the horn idea into tusks that protrude through the skin, providing eye protection at the expense of a large blind spot. Eyes generally in the nostril area, with the jaw extending past the tusks to make the head noticeably bigger. I think the moss being maintained to along the spine as an aesthetic choice and using them as reigns and mounting loops would be good for multiple seats, while allowing for a wild and overgrown vibe when they're not in human company. Can use the claws on the underside to cling to another dragon's moss and start wailing with its head like a giraffe, or trying to bite through the spine after latching onto one. The false head tail could have functioning spikes and they could turn quickly and whip each other with it if they're being pursued. Could potentially still have limbs, just have them tucked up against the body when in motion and then prop themselves up when they're being struggling on the surface.

Testing some colors on a side blog for some fish themed cursors how I found how to install on your blog I keep watching vids of bettas and kuhli loaches and blue dream shrimp tanks and this is the time/space/money compromise

^Whoops forgot one, this one I used on the bottom arm to get that oil effect. This was me trying to get an interesting set of painterly brushes in medibang for my tablet, and here’s a tutorial for the last one to show how to get its texture effect right, but until I feel like posting an actual drawing here’s something for everyone else to play with. Brush settings: I start off with 1 to get the base color down and then switch to mix easier, but experiment and find something that works for you. 1) mixing=40 load = 90 2) mixing=30 load 19

Those four lines on top are the actual brush I used, available in this set here. You can definitely make it cleaner/more even than this, but I needed an example. It’s the closest I’ve gotten so far to something similar to digital painting, so I’m happy with it.

There's a method using an overlay layer filled with 50% gray and painted black and white as needed that might get you a similar effect though!

one more draft tossed out real quick. Tried doing sharpies on plastic wrap a few months ago to see if a transparent unbleedable sheet would help me get more confident. Everywhere thats yellow was every time I messed up a pose.

I forgot this was in my drafts for like a year lmao. I was playing around with a dried out nasty king sized sharpie because man that was fun and I got a lot of texture out of it.

Do you have any examples of art that used an outline brush? When I google it all I get is stuff with a slight border fill around a finished image or a thick line art brush setting with tapered ends.

I was trying to go for a cool inverted color effect with a homework assignment, but I forgot to accommodate the text bubbles and didn’t finish the last panel.

My friend got me a few oil based sharpies a while back for my birthday and I sorely regret not messing with them earlier because they have such a funky way of blending, except for the purple but still it's great. This is also what a normal page in my sketchbook looks like too sadly enough, I wish I was one of those artists that could actually get one idea only on the page and not get a new idea halfway through. Best effect was oil sharpie on regular sharpie filled areas.
