The trope of girls fighting over a man is overused, I agree with that, and I hate it when the only development girls usually get in a shonen manga is about the male MC.

HOWEVER.

Could you imagine what went down when Yuta and Maki first hooked up? Rika would never allow something like that. We know she would do anything to protect Yuta, that she loves him and - she respects power.

My point, Maki definitely kicked Rika's ass at some point and "deserved" the right to be Yuta.

Because Rika agreed they could protect him together.
