Lae'zel's character and her entire situation at the beginning of the game becomes so much more funny when you find out she's 22. It makes so much sense. Imagine you're 22 and you're exposed to this dangerous toxin or chemical or something - but not to worry, you learnt that this can be easily fixed, you just need to dial 911 real quick. Common knowledge. Everyone knows that. You learnt that in kindergarten, it's up there with fire alarm drills.
But the people you're stuck with have no concept of modern medicine and when you say "let's go to the hospital" they will say shit like "i think they kill people at the hospital" and "we should ask this swamp lady" or "this guy over there told me about this homoeopathic healer kind of guy but he got abducted" or "this random bard wants to help" and "I'm not going to dial 911 because I don't want the government to know my home address" or "maybe we should consider a deal with Satan". And then a bunch of them KEEP consuming the chemical because it makes them "stronger". One guy might explode for unrelated reasons. You have a few days before this situation is getting critical and suddenly they're solving crime and doing general charity for the community.
And FOR SOME REASON you still try to help these idiots and you STILL want to help them get the cure even though they all keep insisting the "doctors" at the "hospital" might try to "kill them" and they don't have insurance. And you keep telling them to just. go. to. the. hospital. before the time runs out and you all die very horribly of a very treatable condition.
And also you're 22 in a foreign country and you're responsible for shepherding this gaggle of idiots who are all ranging anywhere from 24 to 240 years old.
and then you get to the hospital and the doctors try to kill you
if a terf even looks at this they will die in seven days just to clarify
*looks at polyamorous triad* so which of you is the soldier and which is the poet and which is the king
this is the perfect reblog post cancelled
Imagine that-- she's using a tumblr note to vent about personal shit again. What is this, the 2010's?
I've been working with my therapist on irrigating creative energy blocked by anger-- finding root causes, being aware of unmet needs, overcoming deeeeeeep resentment, relinquishing the need for control. Good stuff.
And so at school, we're now being expected to log that we've provided accommodations for every student on a weekly basis. Also we have to log that we've sent parent communications, five per week. Also I have to deal with tables in a space that barely accommodates the number of students, with ukuleles and acting exercises. Also I have two study halls per day. Also I have to be in charge of academic advising for six students. Also my incentive allotment (and yearly retention bonus) is now going to be determined by yet ANOTHER test that the students have to take along with all the other exams, now for a total of possibly over 15 tests they have to do throughout the year. These are 4th and 5th graders btw.
Baseline testing is conducted at the beginning and end of the school year for their core subjects: ELA, Math, and Science. Interim STAAR plus STAAR. Now exams for Engineering, Visual Arts, Music, and maybe even Performing Arts. I would be responsible for both Music and Performing Arts. Also the rubric was written by some incompetent rando so even he didn't have an answer for how my hybrid class would test. Also our admin team is more compact and departmentalized now.
Is this supposed to be fucking sustainable? Am I just supposed to be okay with this? Charter life is absolutely wild. I don't think I can do this job anymore. I gotta get outta here. My big hang-up is how much I love the students and my friends I've made here.
Idk what to do at this point but I'm reaaaaaallllllyyyyyy nervous about going into my third year. I'm trying not to let all this veer me from my trajectory but I don't see myself doing all this for very long before crashing out. Time to aggressively revamp my self-care routines I guess.
Anyway it's all terrible and that's just the state of my little corner of education. 🤷 Feel free to reblog to spread awareness, comment to validate or commiserate or maybe send it along to anyone who might be able to offer any insight that would be great.
as humiliating as it is to repost myself from a light-mode-user's reddit screenshot, i cannot allow this year's zenquish to go uncelebrated.
celebrate my favorite holiday with me, my friends.
if the emperors of rome can add extra months that actually fuck the calendar up i'm allowed to add a new month that lasts 0.0000 picoseconds
the last holiday that hasn't been commercialized
i made this up when i was a little kid and nothing would make me happier than to see people celebrating it for years to come
zenquish approaches. prepare to rejoice! briefly!

writing advice that actually made my writing worse
okay but can we talk about writing advice that actually made my writing worse for a second
like not in a “this is bad advice for everyone” way in a “this absolutely sabotaged me personally” way
because ??? some of this set me BACK
1. “show don’t tell” (taken too literally) this one almost ruined my prose
i got so scared of “telling” anything that every sentence turned into… over-explained action
instead of writing:
she was nervous
i’d write:
her fingers tapped against the table, her leg bouncing, her breath uneven, her gaze flickering toward the door--
and it just KEPT GOING
like yes, showing is important but at some point you’re not “immersive” you’re just exhausting
2. “cut all adverbs” this made my writing feel so stiff it hurt
i started replacing simple phrasing with weird, clunky sentences just to avoid using one single “-ly” word
like… why am i doing gymnastics to avoid “quietly”
no one is giving out medals for adverb avoidance 😭
3. “write every day no matter what” this one burned me OUT
because instead of listening to my brain when it was fried, i forced myself to produce words i knew weren’t going anywhere
and then i’d reread it later and hate everything i wrote
which made me want to avoid writing even more
consistency matters, yes but forcing it when you’re running on fumes just trains you to associate writing with dread
4. “plan everything before you start” this killed my excitement SO fast
i’d spend weeks outlining every detail and by the time i actually started writing…
the story already felt “done” in my head
no curiosity left. no momentum.
now i leave gaps on purpose so i actually want to keep going
5. “make your writing sound pretty” this is the one that made my writing feel the most fake
i was so focused on making sentences sound “good” that i stopped focusing on what was actually happening
everything turned vague. floaty. kind of… nothing
like yeah it sounded nice but nothing hit
now i care way more about clarity and impact than sounding impressive
6. “your first draft should be terrible” okay this one is half true but also messed with my head
because i took it as: “don’t even TRY”
so i’d write things i knew weren’t working and just leave them
instead of… fixing them a little? making them better?
your draft doesn’t have to be perfect but it also doesn’t have to be painful to read 😭
idk i think the biggest thing i’ve learned is:
advice isn’t universal
what helps one writer can absolutely wreck another
so if something is making your writing worse, harder, or more miserable
you are allowed to drop it. immediately.
no guilt. no “but everyone says this works”
like okay… it doesn’t work for ME.
and that’s enough.
