The funniest thing about HTTYD subtext/ hidden humour is the way they treat the non dragon animals.

There is no level of care or interest in fish whatsoever bucks of wish will be lavished on the dragons with little mind. Which yeah makes sense cause they’re carnivorous but there’s a fair few times where it goes beyond simple feeding.

Yaks are basically just live balls of fur being thrown around.

And just like can we take a moment to imagine being a dragon hunter or heck just straight the man himself viggo? (who is not straight but anyways) and just spending your entire life viewing dragons as monsters but you’ve done it. You’ve gone through your redemption arc and you have your own dragon. Hiccup the man who lead you into the light comes up to places his hand on your shoulder and says. “You wanna play catch the yak.” And the man goes onto explain how they literally use their powerful scary dragons to hunt down defenceless creatures for sport then place em in restrictive nets and tight spaces for profit. And uhh just having to come to terms with that…

y'all ever think how viggo could've escaped from death's clutches for the second time? cause like, the first time he 'died' in that volcano after he pretty much dived after the dragon eye, we didn't see his body. and when we see him later in the series, he has a burn scar on one side of his face. but the next time he was meant to 'die' (i refuse to believe he's actually dead, sue me), he's in the cave, right? and he has the skrill with him. and we see arrows sticking out his back.

i'm just wondering what kind of scars and physiological effects it would have on him later on. i imagine he'd have dents where the arrows were with discolouration (idk the right word for it), and he'd probably have some kind of sharp phantom pains as well. maybe the sharp feeling of the initial piercing of the skin, with a duller but still painful in its own right kind of feeling? you know when you hear a loud noise and you get that ringing noise in your ears, then it's like everything else is muffled slightly but you can still hear that ringing sound? like that but with Viggo's arrow pains thing

In the episodes of Shell Shocked, Ruffnut and Tuffnut mention how Viggo would actually be fun to hang with if he didn't try to kill them all the time. Can you imagine Viggo being among the chaos of the Edge? I'm telling you, he wouldn't last a week.

y'all know how Darwin used to study evolution and such. in one of his studies, he discovered a group of birds (and I am paraphrasing bc it's 2am and icba find sources rn) native to one place got swept away in a storm and essentially got redistributed onto another place. the food and wildlife being different in the new place, the birds had to find away to survive, and through trial and error (i.e. evolution), they basically mutated/evolved to survive the new place, which took years

the point i'm trying to make is that it does not make complete sense to me that Grimmel managed to single handedly wipe out all of the fury family of dragons (night furies, light furies, etc.).

the fury family of dragons (FFoD – i'm being lazy, sue me), must've AT LEAST been native to a land elsewhere. this could be the Hidden World, or literally anywhere outside the archipelago, and a small number of these dragons got swept away to where Grimmel could reach and kill them.

we already know that dragons cannot fly for extended periods of time without rest. so it's *possible* that some of the FFoD got separated from the rest of them. anyways, that's my two cents on this

One of my most favourite, yet absolutely heart wrenching headcanons that keep me awake at night, is that Hiccup missed Viggo after his death.

Because here’s the thing. Apart from the fact Viggo sacrificed himself for Hiccup, Toothless and their cause, and apparently grew to understand and respect the creatures he once sold and killed, he was the only antagonist who truly ever matched Hiccup. The only one who could really keep up with his intellect, strategies, ways of thinking, and challenge him himself, so much they became obsessed with each other.

And I think for someone like Hiccup, who has always felt like he didn’t quite fit even among his own people, having an opponent who had the mental capacity to comprehend all of Hiccup (and being pretty much the only one), was both exhilarating and terrifying. You can come at me for saying this, but Viggo held much more respect for Hiccup’s ingenious mind than the Riders and Berkians ever did.

I personally don’t think it went as far as liking Viggo as a person. But it was about the strange way an enemy can become a mirror. And once the mirror broke by Viggo’s demise, Hiccup caught himself unconsciously staring at the pieces with a painful realization. Realization, that he misses that mind, equaling his own, that challenge, that presence and maybe if he ever let himself think for too long, he missed Viggo himself.
