Hiccup was born with shit hearing and it just gets worse with age. Born early, hearing canal never formed or whatever idk he just got shit hearing.
Snotlout loses his hearing from the multiple lightning strikes (I LOOKED IT UP OK).
When it happens, it's the one time that Hiccup is the one that can be near Snotlout.
He just sits down next to him, and writes I Know on the ground in front of Snotlout.
Because he does. He's HoH too, almost dead by the time rtte happens, and Snotlout is 13 and scared, and Hiccup is 13, upset for his cousin, and the only one who can comfort him.
Their arguments are no longer loud like they would be in canon.
They're quiet and full of hand motions in their own made up language (they made their own sign language to talk to each other - the adults are confused by it, Spitelout hates it but Stoick and Gobber think it's Great and kind of adorable they have their own secret language now), and they both let out frustrated noises but without words.
The implement the "hand language" (as Stoick called it once) with the riders.
It's the most used language on the edge during missions.
Viggo has spent way too long trying to decode it.

Johann had no idea that was a language he thought the 2 were just flapping their hands at each other. Krogan is pissed Johann had no idea because they could've cracked their language because of him.
Heather is visiting the gang, but she doesn't know Snotlout is a girl. Snotlout, fearing Heather's reaction, asks that no one correct her while she's there. So Heather spends the entire time using the wrong pronouns with Snotlout (unintentionally; she just doesn't realize she's doing it wrong). Snotlout is just afraid Heather will see her differently, so lying seems right, even though it's bad for both of them. Heather has no idea she's hurting one of her friends and will feel terrible when she finds out the truth, and maybe even angry that they didn't trust her enough to tell her something so important. They were friends; they should have trusted her enough to talk about it
Besides the fact that Snotlout acts like a complete idiot throughout the visit, lying and hiding the truth from Heather, it's uncomfortable acting like that version of herself when she wasn't herself. It's disgusting, and she wants to vomit every time she has to act that way again, the others realize she's not okay with having to pretend to be something she's not.

It was something small, at first.
A snide comment, one that shouldn’t even matter.
Snotlout flinched a bit at it.
Eret narrowed his eyes.
He knew his lover had a rather sour relationship with his father, but that flinch told Eret that it most likely was more than just sour.
But it was one comment – a small one.
And the look Astrid gave Eret told him to let it go.

The second time, Snotlout came over looking…
Sad.
Like he’d been crying, but was trying to not to anymore.
“What happened, Love?” Eret asked softly, and Snotlout shrugged quietly.
“Just a fight with my dad. Nothing new.” He mumbled.

“Come here.” Eret wrapped him up in his arms, letting Snotlout lay his head on his chest, and-
There were the tears.

Before he could get more context from Hiccup or Astrid or Fishlegs or even the twins, Eret actually witnessed a fight.
Snotlout had gone to the forge – starting to take over for Gobber, learning properly from the older man, who seemed a bit more than just happy to teach Snotlout so he could retire1.
While there, Spitelout – it had to be, because he looked so much like Snotlout – had approached the forge, and Hiccup swore, and made a beeline for the forge, right behind Spitelout.
Eret followed, because his lover was in there, and Hiccup swearing and practically running over told Eret he needed to be there.
He got there in time to see Snotlout go down, and Gobber hollering at Spitelout, getting between them immediately, and Eret looked at Snotlout, as Hiccup ran to him, and checked him over.
Narrowing his eyes, Eret grabbed Spitelout by the back of his shirt, and threw him out of the forge, and stepped out, as his new chief, his lover, and Gobber watched with wide eyes.
“Hiccup, I don’t think I’m going to have a dad after this.” He faintly heard Snotlout said.
“Sure you will – you still got Gobber.”

Eret looked up from doing the dishes, finding Astrid there.
Snotlout was with Hiccup, Gobber, and Valka, and telling them everything at this point, because apparently nobody had full confirmation before, despite Snotlout having been running to Gobber’s house for a safe space since he was a child.
Well, they got confirmation now.
The problem was Adelaide, really – the toddler was Snotlout’s baby sister, and where she was going was in the air, since Snotlout’s mother died having her.
(Realistically, she should go to Snotlout.)
“I assure you – I did.” Eret said, turning away from the future Chieftess.
“Okay, yeah, he needed an ass kicking like, forever ago.” Astrid said, “But it didn’t have to be you.”
“Well it wasn’t going to be anyone else.”
“No, pretty sure Gobber was close to doing it – he finally got confirmation that Spitelout was beating Snotlout, he was damn ready to kill’im.” Astrid said, amused. “Gobber pretty much raised Snotlout.”
“So I’ve heard.” Eret said flatly, and Astrid sighed.
“Snotlout said he never told you how bad things were.”
“He said they had a sour relationship. That is not sour – that is abuse.” Eret said, frowning.
“I know.” Astrid sighed again. “We all sort of knew, but Snotlout wouldn’t say anything, and we could never really prove it. Not until now, at least.”
“So, am I really in trouble for defending my partner?”
“Absolutely not.” Astrid said, leaning against the doorway. “Hiccup told me to tell you that what you did is considered an act of defense in our village. It would’ve been if you’d have killed him too.”
“I had no plans on killing him, but I can’t say I would’ve stopped if he didn’t go down the first time.” Eret said.
“Yeah, well, it’s pretty much guaranteed you and ‘Lout are getting Adelaide, so. Try to not murder in front of her.” Astrid said, more amused than concerned that their new viking in the village said he would’ve murdered Spitelout. “I wouldn’t admit to that in front of Valka, though. We were all kind of… avoiding. Telling her. Snotlout especially begged us to not tell her his dad’s an ass.”
That told Eret a lot, too.
He didn’t say anything, as he turned back to the dishes.
When Snotlout got home a few hours later, dinner was ready and waiting, and with him was a little girl with black hair and green eyes, clinging to him as he carried her.
“Um. I, um.” Snotlout hesitated, as Adelaide – a girl he only heard stories of from Snotlout and Hiccup – shied into Snotlout’s neck.
Eret simply smiled.
“Hi. I’m Eret, son of Eret.” He introduced himself to her.
And that did it.
Adelaide was pushing herself up from Snotlout, looking baffled.
“Did your daddy not know any names?” She asked, and Eret grinned, as Snotlout paled.
“Adelaide-”
“It’s fine, ‘Lout.” Eret said, amused. “And if you must know, he knew plenty of them. He was just vain enough to want to name his only son after himself.”
“What a dick.”
“ADELAIDE!” Snotlout barked, as Eret burst into laughter.
“What!? He is!”

oh my god i love going into the long-term effects of lightning strikes!! like... Snotlout canonically has brain damage, and it's treated like a joke. evil.
And it's not just that!! Chronic pain is one. Migraines is another. HEARING LOSS.
Snotlout has got to be a lot more messed up from the lightning than is explored in canon and I hate that it's all treated like a joke. Like Hiccup with 1 instance I can see being ignored by canon. From what I looked up he could be fine or have migraines or minor side effects from it. But repeated strikes is where issues arise, so there is NO way Snotlout is fine.
The first night Snotlout spends at Gobber's after being permanently removed from his parents' home, he's quiet.
Too quiet.
Much like when he was first brought in when he was a kid.
Gobber doesn't like it, but he was patient with the lad before, and he'd be patient again.
The other kids don't seem to realize that he'd been removed from the Jorgenson home.
Not until about a week after it happens, when Hiccup goes over, sees his cousin, and asks Gobber "what's Snotlout doing here?"
"He lives here now."
Hiccup is quiet at that.
He doesn't say anything, but he sees Gobber tell Snotlout that he is the one making dinner for them, not Snotlout, and you'll remember in time, lad.
Hiccup goes home after dinner, and quietly asks Stoick, who sighs, and simply says that Spitelout and Freda were not fit to parent a child, and Gobber had already watched Snotlout before as a kid, so he took permanent custody.
"They hurt him, didn't they?"
"Less Freda, I think, but aye, they did."
The arguments between Snotlout and Hiccup don't stop, but they definitely change.
Hiccup stops calling Snotlout a useless mutton head, and Snotlout doesn't get physical back.
Astrid is the next to find out, and it's because she says she'll walk home with him, and he says they don't live nearby each other anymore.
Confused, she just says ok, we can still walk together.
She's less confused when she sees Snotlout walk to Gobber's, and - hesitantly - walks in without knocking (it still feels wrong to just walk in).
She sees Gobber welcome Snotlout back, and go oh, Astrid, what brings ye here, lass?.
She decidedly just says she was walking with Snotlout since they were headed in the same direction. Snotlout looks confused at the lie, but says nothing.
She goes to Hiccup immediately, and he tells her what he knows.
Fishlegs finds out next. They're technically neighbors now, he just hadn't realized Snotlout moved in permanently, since he remembers the smaller teen being taken care of by Gobber when they were kids, mostly from his mom telling his dad that it was so kind of Gobber to let Snotlout stay the night sometimes, when his parents weren't fit to care for him. He's upset he didn't notice sooner, and asks if Snotlout's ok. Snotlout just shrugs, doesn't really answer.
The twins find out last, mostly because they decided to prank Hiccup, but get Snotlout instead, and actually hurt him on accident.
Gobber is there immediately, since Hiccup shouted at Astrid to get him, and the twins realize Gobber is now Snotlout's guardian.
They set up a prank for his parents, and cause utter chaos for the two, until Stoick gets involved and makes the twins stop.
As a kid, Snotlout would sneak out of the house. I'm thinking age range of 5-12 years old, he would always sneak out of the house after his dad comes home, especially if the old man is in a bad mood.
After the 4th time, someone notices.
Gobber.
And he sighs, and just takes Snotlout home, and once the boy's asleep, he informs Stoick that "your nephew was outside, he's at my house, tell your brother in law"
In the morning, Snotlout would be quietly picked up by Stoick, and dropped off back home.
All his parents know is that he ran to stay with his Uncle Stoick, at least until he was 10, and then they realized Stoick was claiming it because he didn't want them starting shit with Gobber.
Spitelout is pissed. Freda is not, and tells her husband to knock it off, and at least someone is taking care of him when he decides to be a "little rebel".
She's letting him "rebel safely".
That safety lets him have a safe space to go to, and he goes until he's 12.
That's when Hiccup goes over to Gobber's more, and Snotlout feels pushed out.
So he stops going to Gobber's house.
He still runs off, but nobody realizes it this time. His parents think he's at Gobber's, and Gobber thinks he's at home.
He simply sits in a cave in the woods, now.
At 15, Hookfang notices his rider is leaving home, and nobody seems to care.
He throws a fit, and Gobber notices this time.
And this time, Gobber notices the black eye the teen is trying to hide.
This time, things escalate.
Snotlout lives with Gobber permanently, after that.
