Not gonna lie. Everytime I see her face on my insta feed, I immediately get up and do something. She has me trained.
we gotta get back to torrent distribution, i just watched someone eat eight grand in bandwidth charges because they ran a direct-download piracy site with local file hosting through cloudflare. torrents were invented literally for this exact reason
torrents work like this
i have a file or folder on my pc that i want to share with other people. let's call it gayshit.mp3
unfortunately gayshit.mp3 is 750mb and im not paying for discord nitro so i need another way to send it
i put it into qbittorrent and it makes a torrent file. this is essentially a very small file that points to gayshit.mp3 so other computers can find it. kinda like a treasure map
i send this tiny file to my friend, who loads it into qbittorrent. their computer takes a moment to find mine over the vast expanse of cyberspace and then (as long as my pc is running and the file is still where it should be), it gets copied from my hard drive to theirs
this is the cool part: if somebody else loads that tiny file, they can download it from both of us. if i'm offline but my friend is on, the third person can still get it. this also means that if two people have separate halves of the file, they can download the other half from each other. as long as some combination of people have the pieces between them, they can all have the whole thing.
crucially this does not require a server!!! you can just upload the file to a few people and as long as they keep it, it's still accessible. as long as somebody, somewhere is still connected, it's available forever. the only way it goes away is if everybody disconnects from it.
please learn to torrent
An expert guide to get started using torrentsTorrents are one of the most popular forms of file sharing on the internet, accounting for over
always use qbittorrent, do not use bitorrent or utorrent.

Having short hair really is just
I get up. I walk into the bathroom. I glance in the mirror. My hair is posed in a brand new, never-before-seen array that defies the laws of physics.
This a a reminder to not fall victim to the sunk-cost fallacy. Just because you invested time and energy into something, does not mean you should indefinitely waste more time and energy on it, if you decide itâs not what you want anymore. This goes for anything, from books, to relationships, to jobs, to hobbies, etc.
If itâs not serving you anymore, move on.
This is honestly one of the places I find Marie Kondo's advice most helpful. I stop, look at the thing I've spent time and money on only to realize I dislike, and I say, "Thank you for teaching me something about myself and my preferences. I think I've learned this particular lesson and we can part ways now."
And then I don't feel like I "wasted" things or made a mistake. I just tried one path of learning about myself, learned something, and now it's time for a different path. Works a lot better for my brain.
The time Marie Kondo said "you can thank a a shirt you've never worn for teaching you about your taste", thereby making it NOT A WASTE literally rewired my whole brain. Acknowledge the thing and move forward, even if that means leaving the thing behind.
âExplain yourselfâ followed by âstop making excusesâ has always baffled me because the fuck you think explaining myself is????
i need data for a statistics project for school, so be my sample data, worms. i need thirty people minimum so if there aren't enough voters yet i'd love if you could help. thank you very much. worms.

Bought my uncle a burger and milkshake in exchange for letting me disrupt the holiest day of the week, NFL Sunday Football, so I could install a Pi-hole and free the household of ads...the thing abt the specific boomers I live with is they told me not to trust people on the Internet but they do not understand the algorithm or online advertising and think that Facebook has their best interests at heart. And every time I have tried to explain to them that no, blorbo from my dashboard is not selling my kidneys on the dark web but Google from your capitalism is definitely selling your web searches to every advertising company on the planet, they think I am paranoid. How could their personal friend Mark Zuckerberg want anything bad to happen to them etc. I am fighting battles I did not know existed!!!
Update I have had Pi-Hole successfully installed for two (2) hours and have since learned that 40% of the web traffic in this household went to advertisements. FORTY FUCKING PERCENT. We live in hell. This is the greatest gift I have ever given my family that they will not understand or acknowledge or feel any gratitude for.
Update #2: it was rising all night but the number it finally settled on was...60%. 60% of the web traffic in this household went to advertisements. I can't tell if this high number is bc I live in Silicon Valley and probably am subject to the Algorithmic Internet in ways people outside of Silicon Valley are not or it is normal to have 2/3rds of your web traffic be ads, but it did make me set up a recurring donation of the EFF lmfao.
Okay I have had multiple people ask, so here are the useful websites that me and Beryl used to muddle our way through:
Using Pi-hole and Raspberry Pi (on the Raspberry Pi website, really good overview of what Pi-hole does)
Tumblr-archived Twitter thread about one household's experience with Pi-hole (this is what sold me on it. Also the tweets were published in 2022 and Pi-hole is actively being developed, so I think some of the teething problems he mentioned might have cleared up or are at least being addressed.)
Pi-hole website (gives broad strokes of the software and imho is not actually that helpful, however this proves that I am not making shit up)
Pi-hole documentation (read prerequisites carefully, you do NOT need the newest model of Raspberry Pi to run this thing!! You don't even need a Raspberry Pi at all, you can run it on a bunch of Linux systems however I'm very stupid when it comes to Linux and when my options are install and learn a whole ass new OS or spend $$ on a Raspberry Pi and hook it up to my TV with a wired mouse and keyboard I will unfortunately be spending money)
Privacy International's guide to setting up Pi-hole on a Raspberry Pi (bro this one saved our asses)
You guys can ask me questions if you want but I guarantee I will not know the answers bc I don't know shit about fuck, I just followed the directions and reaped the rewards. It did take us 2 hours to set up bc I'm bad at following directions (and it's kind of complicated if you've been out of the software game for a while like I have), and you do have to be sososo brave about fucking around with your internet provider's configuration. So make sure you eat before you do it!! However it has been so worth it for me so far, given that now all my devices at home are running faster and I'm not seeing any ads while web browsing. We will see what complaints my family comes up with, but I love it so far.
Also!! if you've never heard of Raspberry Pi, which I realize are not all of my followers are lost in the Silicon Valley sauce so you might not have, here's is their website and their page for using Raspberry Pi at home.
(And here is the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit that fights for digital privacy, free speech, and innovation, if you, like me, were presented with cold hard data about your personal internet usage and suddenly realized that our internet is fully a dystopia. haha.)
After a few months with pi-hole, I recently switched to AdGuard Home. It was recommended/is co-promoted in a pi-hole discord server, and it seems to be blocking a bit more successfully/consistently for me than the pi-hole did.
I also use Blokada on my phone when I'm not home and have the Windscribe browser extension which includes 10GB of free VPN traffic and has uBlock integrated into it. (AdGuard does technically make things that do this but I like those better; ymmv).
It all takes some setup and tinkering, but I highly, highly recommend taking steps to clear out some of the internet garbage and protect your info.
Hey runners (and walkers)! Thought this might be helpful :)
Shoelace Voodoo
The heel slipping one is awesome if you have to wear orthotics because it stops them from slipping round inside your shoe
Oh! Iâll have to try this
oh my god. oh, oh my god. the wide forefoot one⌠oh my god bless you you beautiful hero
Ianâs Shoelace Site â https://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/ â is the page for all these lacing patterns and more.
Heâs got specific lacing advice for skates and tall boots and there are decorative patterns and I recently relaced my skate shoes for both a wide forefoot and less friction on the laces so itâs easier to tighten and loosen them but he also has lace-locking patterns so that shoes stay exactly as tight as you laced them the first time and it is just a VERY GOOD website.
Like. Iâve been buying shoes the wrong size because itâs often hard to find wide shoes but the lacing pattern for a wide forefoot means that my big hobbit feet actually fit into the previously too-tight running shoes and sneakers I had.

What a Healthcare Event in Nanaimo, B.C., Revealed About Two Nations
This last weekend, my partner and I took a trip up to the beautiful Sunshine Coast of Vancouver Island for Tod Maffinâs Nanaimo Infusion. Tod is a Canadian journalist who has spent time on the internet as Americaâs emotional support Canadian, a role he has excelled at. The goal of the Infusion was to bring Americans and Canadians together to celebrate our common humanity and connect American healthcare workers to Canadian recruiters.
Disclaimer
Iâm going to say some things here that may offend certain demographics of the American population. My intention is not to offend, but to hold up a mirror to our society. If you are offended, then it is time to reflect on the image you see in the mirror.
So, hereâs what I can tell you.
Canadians Really Are That Nice.
From the moment we lined up on the ferry to the moment we were back in the U.S., almost every single Canadian we spoke with was happy to see us and understood that weâre going through some things in America right now. Conversations were easy, people were quiet but also disarming. Everywhere we went, people were unguarded, and the kindness we felt wasnât transactional.
One night, we went out to a Greek restaurant in the Old City Quarter district. Itâs the sort of establishment that feels like it didnât start out as a restaurant, but thatâs what it morphed into. The waitstaff was amazing, and even the owner made sure to come around to every one of his tables and speak with his patrons. The food was simply divine. When the owner got to our table, I told him that I hadnât had moussaka in close to a decade and that his was the best Iâd ever had. I shook his hand and told him we were happy to be there.
As we were paying our bill, two shots of ouzo came out to us, on the house. While I canât confirm it, we suspect the owner quietly sent them our way. The shots were delicious, powerful, and a quick reminder that we were seen and welcomed.
Everyone we met was kind and wanted to know our stories, especially at the actual Infusion event. As a treat for me, I got to listen to a lot of different stories as well. Some folks were Nanaimo natives, some had moved to B.C. from different provinces, and some were wayward Americans who had found their home in Canada. All of them had a keen interest in their communities and in looking out for their neighbors, including us Americans.
To everyoneâs surprise, B.C.âs Premier came out to speak and said that this event showed disputes happen between governments, not people, and that we will get through this together. I havenât heard anything remotely that encouraging since the start of the Trump administration. It was refreshing and beautiful, all at the same time. The consensus I found was that everyone still holds Americans in high regard, more or less, but despises our current administrationâand thatâs fair.
Which brings me to:
Americans Are Strung Out.
First and foremost, all the Americans we met were strung out and shellshocked. Most were healthcare workers, nurses, professionals, and people from marginalized communities. I met a young woman from Cleveland who simply couldnât fathom what it was like to be in a public space and not fear for your life. She was crying because all the Canadians in the park were genuinely happy to see her and were glad that she was there.
She marveled at the people and families in the park who were just hanging out. Children were playing on the playground, adults were walking along seaside trails, and nowhere was there a sense of fear, urgency, or reluctance. It was just people milling about and having a night out. This was her first time having that experience.
If I had to guess, she was young enough that she doesnât have any memory of an America where people just go to the park to hang out and relax, and where kids get to run free. I remember that America. It wasnât that long ago when kids still walked to school by themselves and hung out on the playground without adults constantly hovering over them. We donât do public spaces anymore, and children, by and large, do not go outside to play.
This change in America has been slow enough that many people arenât cognizant of it until they experience life abroad, or until theyâve been in parks so neglected that you wouldnât feel safe just sitting there, never mind allowing your children to run free and have their own unsupervised Lord of the Flies time with their play pals.
The people who came are deeply concerned about their own safety and welfare in America right now. Some were gay, some were Black, and a few were even there on asylum claims. I cannot overstate how shocking that was to hear, but thatâs also the reality many Americans are finding themselves in. Regardless, these are young people who grew up performing active-shooter drills and feel the U.S. government doesnât care about education, safety, or their well-being, and theyâre right.
One woman I spoke with informed me that the âprofessionalâ category of her degree was removed by the Department of Education, making future employment more difficult and delegitimizing the education she did receive. Sheâs worked in healthcare for years, but that could be in jeopardy because of the administrationâs attempt to ârein inâ student loan borrowing. Canada has a pathway for her.
A Crisis On Both Sides
Hereâs the thing: both Canada and the United States are in crisis, and I want to talk about one specific area where both nations are strugglingâhealthcare.
The Nanaimo Infusion didnât just happen. Canada has serious shortcomings in its healthcare system, not in the quality of care, but in the shortage of supply. At the same time, the United States is also experiencing a healthcare crisis, with the biggest issue being access to care via health insurance. Both of these crises are self-induced, and the end result is the same: people are dying while waiting for the care they need.
The difference is how the two countries are responding. Canada is actively recruiting healthcare professionals, and by all appearances, itâs working. Over a thousand Americans showed up for the recruiting event in Nanaimo. The model has been so successful in recruiting healthcare workers that other cities across Canada are actively creating their own Infusion events to replicate its success.
Meanwhile, the U.S. approach to healthcare is to continue down the path of a market-based solution. So far, what that has produced is increased insurance premiums, denied claims, patients not receiving the care their doctor is prescribing, and higher burdens are being placed on policyholders, resulting in medical bankruptcy. So, what is the point of insurance if that insurance is functionally useless?
Who will have better health outcomes ten years from now? Itâs hard to sayâbut my money is not on the U.S. We already have some of the lowest health outcomes in the industrialized world, with our average life expectancy dropping steadily, and since weâre not addressing it, thatâs not likely to change anytime soon.
At the end of the day, this is a tale of two countries that have chosen very different paths. Canada has decided to live up to the ideals of America as written by Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus, while the United States is turning its back on them. As someone who studies history, holds an advanced degree in the field, and understands pattern recognition in systems, itâs painful to watch my country go down this path of suicide.
On A Positive Note
Still, I want to end on something hopeful. Americans are hurting. Those who showed up in Nanaimo are questioning Americaâs future and their place in it. They feel targeted, and as someone who has voted against Donald Trump three times, I get it; I have been targeted too.
So, when the event organizers stated that it doesnât matter who you are, if you are gay, or have trans-kids, all are welcome in Canada, I canât adequately describe what I felt after hearing that. It gave me a sense of longing for home that Iâve rarely experienced anywhere in my life.
But the moment that stayed with me most was hearing about a man from Victoria who brought his kids to the event as a teachable moment. America isnât seen in the best light on the world stage right now. In some cases, Americans are painted as monsters because a majority of us chose this path. It wasnât forced; it was intentional. Go to any corner of your favorite social media app, and that monster element is present. So, he wanted his kids to see that weâre all human, and that Americans are not people to be fearedâeven if America, right now, is a scary place.
If youâve ever been branded an outsider, an âother,â or some kind of misfit, then you know what it feels like to be ostracized, to live in silence, and to constantly look over your shoulder. Iâve lived with that feeling for most of my life. So, hearing a father tell his children to interact with Americans and learn that weâre just people felt especially raw and tender.
There were no politics or slogans; just a lesson that the people on the other side of the border are nothing to be afraid of; theyâre simply neighbors they havenât met yet.
That moment stayed with me because it was the culmination of everything I felt all weekend. The kindness, safety, and calm curiosity we experienced have been reaffirmed across generations, and that feels wholesome and distinctly Canadian. That choice made Nanaimo and Canada feel comfortable, like your favorite shirt, and if only for a moment, it reminded me again of what home should feel like.
Iâve been thinking about thatâa lot.
I am grateful to the community of Nanaimo, the communities of Vancouver Island, and Canada for reminding me of what normal is. I see you, I got you, and I hope to be a part of that, please.

i wanted to reblog this as an awesome example of a homemade puzzle toy! i know weâve linked to a lot of buyable puzzle toys, but even if youâre on a budget you can make something great at home with stuff you have on hand. this whole thing is made with cardboard so itâs fine if your cat chews on it and there are lots of nooks and crannies to put treats or dry kibble in!
