It’s funny to me how with games like Rimworld, players will try to make the most evil colony possible and it’ll be like “yeah we run entirely on prison labor and when they die we skin them and turn them into hats” but it’s a very juvenile sense of evil that’s you’d expect to see in the margins of a middle school notebook

but when Cities: Skylines players want to do evil it’ll be “I built an urban freeway interchange and parking lots in accordance with real Texas zoning laws” and every comment is something like “this looks like Houston’s 290/10/160 interchange, I drive on it for work and dream about blowing it up every single day” or “you’re a real sick fuck you know that? Also good job with your frontage roads!”

oppression is eased when you are white, as you get extra privileges, and your whiteness is seen as a positive characteristic that in some ways counter-balances your other forms of being a minority. whiteness controls everything.

you are automatically way more innocent in your own oppression as a gay, trans, disabled person because of your whiteness.

the thing that strikes me about this latest wave of anti-trans hate and legislation in the U.S. is that it feels like it's *kind of* about trans people but really about a fear fundamental to all conservatives that a day will one day come when they will no longer be able to completely control their children

american conservatism is a death cult. trump made this incredibly obvious but it's been trending that way for a while. it is spiteful, bigoted, cruel, morally bankrupt, and all evidence in support of it has either been fabricated, forged, deceptively edited, or disproven. being conservative goes against a fundamental human desire to be kind to those around you and I think on some level conservatives know this, and thus, they know that the only reason children would subscribe to these values is if they are indoctrinated into them with cult-like single-mindedness

Conservatives have been pushing for homeschooling for decades, they've been raising concerns about teaching evolution in schools since the early 20th century, they've made wedge issues out of sex ed, history textbooks, and now gay and trans teachers. They want a world in which children are taught to be conservative from birth and any attempt to teach them anything else is a literal crime. They want this because they know, deep down inside, that most children would not agree with them unless they were literally brainwashed into it.

also worth pointing out that most child abuse (sexual or otherwise) takes place within a "traditional" family structure or a "traditional" religious institution and I have to wonder if people who want to abuse kids have a fundamental investment in preserving strict hierarchies in which adult men have unquestioned authority over children

This is another big reason why most conservatives bitch about higher education; a lot of younger people (myself included) undo their conservative upbringing brainwashing after being exposed to new ideas, meeting new and diverse people, and getting a higher-quality education when they attend college. 

This is also, of course, why conservative lawmakers constantly seek to undermine public education and make it shittier so the kids who go through it are more ignorant. An educated and well-informed populace is the GOP’s worst nightmare.

As someone who is went through that deconstruction at university- it really is their worst nightmare because a lot of the time kids go to school and suddenly the world doesn’t make sense anymore because you’re exposed to all these new ideas. A lot will try and bury themselves harder, but once those seeds are planted, nothing is the same again and it is terrifying.

But when you have all these ‘christian universities’ offering to keep their kids ‘safe’ after they were home schooled and cut off from the world, well. They can manage to keep the kids controlled for longer.

This is INCREDIBLY current. The deadline to submit comments is September 12, 2022. Please also keep in mind that this is a PUBLIC, GOVERNMENT platform. No threats, no sass. This isn’t some “vote blue no matter who” shit, this will play a hand in legislation related to trans youth.

Be diplomatic and tactful, but inexorable with comments. Be as general or personal as you wish–having a variety of accounts works great. If you’re a student, educator, or aspiring educator, definitely say so and give support from that lens.

If you’re not from the United States and wish to provide support, there’s an option to comment anonymously. I would recommend doing this with a VPN that sets your location to the United States, because, again, this is a government website.

Without access to a VPN, speaking up as a member of the international community will hold water, especially if you briefly describe how transgender regulation has affected your country and state that you hope the United States can achieve your country’s own level of acceptance or that they can evolve to a point your own country has not been able to reach at this point in time.

If anyone has any knowledge as to how to appeal to the U.S. Education Department in particular, please add on.

As a trans person, I’d like to note it isn’t just us this change would protect. More than a few cis girls, either from the ‘not presenting as female enough for my liking’ bullshit, envy over their skills, racism, or twenty other garbage reasons, have been caught up in trans panic, leading to all kinds of harassment and violence. Protection for trans people is protection for all.

So really the answer to “what is alienating conservatives” is “absolutely anything that reminds them of any new information they’ve learned about the world since they were a small child” and it becomes a lot more clear how futile it is to pretend you care about what they want

I have seen this among people who aren’t conservative at all. One old friend of mine who was an actual Marxist asked me one day why all of a sudden all these hijabis started showing up in Boston around 1997. I happened to know that 1997 was the year he moved to a different neighborhood and began to use a different subway line to commute to his job. I told him that it was his commute that had changed, that the hijabis had probably been there for decades. He didn’t believe me. He was convinced that He Knew The City and there was no way an entire immigrant group could have escaped his notice until chance brought them to his attention.

It may be more common among social conservatives, what with their idealization of childhood innocence, but it’s nowhere near unique to them.

Everyone mentions “but there are so many kids in foster care who need homes!” when someone talks about the connection between abortion bans and the adoption trade. Those adoptive parents do not want children with opinions, thoughts, traumas and experiences. They want infants. They do not want the effort of helping a child who has been in the system, they want an infant they can brainwash. This is why those freaky big Christian families often adopt lots of infants and toddlers but not older children. They see children as little pets instead of people with independent lives and personalities and the child being an infant when it comes into their care helps maintain that illusion.

Do not tell anti-abortion people to adopt. Do not. They do not deserve to ruin another child’s life. Not every home is healthy for a child. Not every family will be a family for that child.
