Hey if you have chronic pain, you gotta remember that the cognitive load of dealing with that is exhausting. Just that alone. Never mind what else you've got going on.
You're not lazy or being dramatic; you're overloaded.

The Skeleton Dance (1929) dir. Walt Disney
über den Tellerrand (hinaus-)schauen
literally: to look beyond the edge of the plate
to be open to new and unfamiliar things; to look beyond one's own horizons; to think out of the box; to not be wearing blinkers
Origin: The idiom likely originated in the second half of the 20th century in the worlds of politics and journalism. As early as 1953, journalist Arno Scholz used the term “Tellerand” (edge of the plate) in his book Berlin im Würgegriff (Berlin in a Stranglehold) as a metaphor for a narrow-minded outlook: “That’s how it is again now; a large portion of Germans once more see only as far as the edge of their own plate.” The idiom is said to have been popularized by former Federal Minister of Economics Karl Schiller. In his letter of resignation to Chancellor Willy Brandt in 1972, he wrote: “The government has a duty to look beyond the edge of its own plate—beyond the election date—and to tell the people in a timely manner what needs to be done and what needs to be demanded.”
lmfao
in case folk outside the UK aren't abreast of our news, the British press just hounded a black academic to death
a rough timeline of events (from memory, there may be inaccuracies, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
Cambridge professor of sociology Jason Arday is accused of plagiarism by another academic
the accuser is a "race realist" who believes that in a true meritocracy all university professors would be white. this is somehow not acknowledged much during the entire ordeal
this leads to several days of media coverage demanding an investigation, or that Arday is expelled from his post immediately
somehow this accusation that has no effect on the lives of 99.99% of the population becomes FRONT PAGE NEWS in all the newspapers for multiple days, above anything else happening in the UK or the world at large
following intense media scrutiny, Arday resigns his post as a Cambridge professor
today, august 14th, days after resigning, Arday is found dead at his home in Battersea
the British tabloid press remains, and will always be, fucking evil
Went to google more news about professor Jason Arday, and I swear to God the first two pages of research are rancid propaganda sites smearing the man's reputation, up to and including popular Brazilian news magazine Veja.
This article by professor Kehinde Andrews clarifies more about the story of racist harassment Arday has been suffering since he fucking got a teaching job at Cambridge in the first place, in 2023, as the FIRST Black professor in that fucking stupid institution, who sure is taking it's sweet time defending their worker, despite already fucking checking his work for plagiarism and saying he didn't do it:
https://www.voice-online.co.uk/opinion/comment/2026/08/07/ardays-resignation/
Arday's resignation has reignited questions about race and who is truly accepted at the highest levels of British academia
Several of the academics who harassed this man into suicide do not seem to have suffered at all in their academic careers. Actually, Dave Harris, who lost his Emeritus title for his racist behavior back in 2024 (something the news only call "criticizing Critical Race Theory", instead of "sent racist emails to fellow black academics"), was defended by Plymouth University, where he used to work, and fucking got the title back earlier this year.

My spouse and I are both disabled, queer, and native. The world continues kicking us, and Shay was laid off. We are unable to pay July rent without also having August rent at the same time, so we are needing to pull another $1700 together quickly.
Any help is appreciated.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
It's almost like something happened in 2020-now that is causing these problems.

THE NOTES ARE BROKEN! This has been reblogged so many times, Tumblr just shrugged and said “infinity”
reminder to all disabled people that you’re allowed to tell people “i can’t do that” about stuff you can ‘technically’ do but which harms you or requires a period of recovery or preparatory rest etc. you don’t have to explain the complex nuances of your condition to anybody who demands it. i’ve found it’s honestly better to give the least amount of info about your symptoms unless you trust a person a lot. you hold the power over your health information. you choose whether or not to share the details of your condition with people who might not understand.
