when people defend the “Cis white guy is default” thing like “He’s meant to be an everyman we can all relate to and project on!” kindly remind them the largest ethnic group in the WORLD is Han Chinese and the highest gender percentage fluctuates so if you want an ACTUAL “default” you want a 40 year old chinese person whose gender changes from year to year.
#give us the middle-aged gender fluid Chinese protagonist that we can all relate to and project on (via @mr-and-mr-pavus)

Posting on Tumblr vs Instagram is so funny because I just got caught up posting my Danganronpa fan art to Instagram and the piece I did of Junko that got 3 notes on Tumblr is at like 17 likes on Instagram and climbing compared to the rest that have significantly less than that. When I started playing the first game Junko was the only character I already knew about so I thought she was immensely popular LOL
There's a lot you can say about the writing in any Danganronpa game, but the one thing I enjoy about Trigger Happy Havoc specifically is that the characters are for the most part treated equally in terms of what characters get what story/screentime (although obviously characters like Leon and Sayaka serve early game purposes so they aren't as entirely complete as the others)...
Chihiro, although there are faults in the English localization that change the perception of the character, still has probably my favorite additional lore, as even after everything is said and done regarding their strength, they still showed immense understanding and care by creating Alter Ego within the confines of the school. Out of seemingly no materials and while considering themself the weakest of all ultimates, they were able to not only work on memory alone, but task Alter Ego with decoding information left on the laptop.
Even though it's later revealed that Junko knew about Alter Ego the entire time it still hits?
Like, having to grapple with the despair/hope/despair/hope cycle of Chihiro Dies, Alter Ego Is Found, Alter Ego Gets Destroyed, Alter Ego Saves Makoto... It was one of my favorite bits of the game and knowing that Chihiro got to be the strong person they'd always imagined themselves to be by simply JUST DOING WHAT CAME NATURALLY instead of Having to lift weights and become superficially strong just makes me a bit emo. I love Chihiro and Alter Ego deeply and I wish more people would draw fan art of the two of them.
I think at some point Alter Ego does become a character on their own, especially around the time Taka gets Mondo's blessing from beyond the grave through them. It's so fucked up in ways because as a society in 2026 we know the power of AI chat bots and how they are generally known for lying straight to your face in order to keep you coming back in personal conversations, it feels bizarre how Genuine the portrayal of Alter Ego is. It really feels like consciousness coded into a computer and it's endlessly intriguing to me considering the game came out in 2010.
Oh and also. Toko. I fucking love Toko ❤️ . I've been so curious to hear opinions on her and Jack/Jill from my system friends and I find it genuinely so intruiging how many people think she Becomes better rep the longer the character is in the game for and I cannot lie i get it. I mean, every character is a stereotype or at the very least a divergence from a popular stereotype in order to prove them Wrong or do twists with them and it is endlessly interesting to me how they simultaneously give her an incredibly awful stereotype and then make her Not act on it like, at all, and flesh out her condition in later medias. It weirdly switches up the way her character comes across, at least to me. It goes from "terrible rep for shock value" to "character who has deep and awful trauma and has an alter that was created to protect her who does less than ideal things in the name of protection because this is fiction" and as much as I agree she still isn't Good representation by any means she's kind of lovable to people who have DID so. Kind of a win at the end of the day even if she's kind of controversial favorite.
Also I do think her and byakuya are very freak4freak. You find out from Byakuya in I THINK his free time events how he became the heir to the togami "empire", and for that he did have to go through a pretty traumatic set of situations in order to prove himself. Especially considering he was the "youngest and smallest" of the possible heirs. I'm forgetting if he actually killed his half-siblings or just beat them in all battles of will, but regardless you can see how much it affects the character and how during the game he gets increasingly more aware of the fact that he is overcompensating for his lack of self worth (or rather his complex about his self worth being correlated to his usefulness... So if he isn't useful he's worth nothing) ... And towards the end when you have to fight him in the trial for not believing that you (makoto) would disagree with him /that he would be wrong.
He also does Meticulously study the way Genocide Jack kills people in order to craft a crime scene that looks like something she may have created herself knowing full well she was in the building with all of them. At the time of playing that trial I took it to be about him framing her but it almost feels like Appreciation or Reverence because it was pretty easy and quick to prove she wasn't responsible. And he's in the library staring at the case files for like, several in game days dude.
Also re: representation on Chihiro I have to say I think generally the Japanese version gets the point across further and I really like this as a guy who enjoys crossdressing/ being feminine. I am definitely someone who has been told before that I Have to be a woman if I want to dress like one which. Sucks badstyle. But I also seriously seriously thought Chihiro was MTF transgender when playing the game (I thought it was going to be the twist) since I played it in English so I'm really partial to that headcannon on the headcannon side of things but. Canon side of things I am still team Hormone Disorder. I do think we need more feminine men in media also, it's really weird to see people pushing binaries on gender nonconforming people even if it's pushing binary transness on them. I find it weird! (2 be clear I am transmasc) Even if I get it with Chihiro specifically
