i have a random issue with a handful of pre-srar fall out boy songs where I LOVE the the start of the song or just generally everything but the chorus, but the chorus itself i find kind of underwhelming (eg: ilalwtwiattgyo, ttotbo, igatrimeanomf, cfmrfrpfmsr, gblogbd(dyptstsasgts)
poor thing...walked straight into the electric fence

So, my iPod does this fucking genius factory thing where it forgets which artwork goes with which album and it makes guesses. Because it’s pretty sure I won’t notice.
Needless to say, I noticed.

unreliable narrator but it's just an aromantic writing romance
the author's barely concealed aromanticism

Well it all starts at an Antarctic research station when this weird dog gets chased by armed men in a helicopter
Guys, PSA, Misfits Market recectly added an AI feature that adds random shit to your cart based on your past purchases.
With the way misfits works, once your shopping window has closed it checks out, charges you, and delivers anything that was in your cart.
So this AI update means that the app will effectively just buy shit automatically, without your knowledge, without you ever opening the app!!!!!!!! I do not want AI using my credit card man fuck this
I had this app downloaded for whenever my car was out of commission and I needed stuff from anywhere too far to bike to. I used it once every couple months. And then I noticed it stole 43 fucking dollars from me and bought a bunch of shit I never even put in my cart and got it delivered to a house I don't even live in anymore 🙃 no I can't dispute the charge

rocky should be naked: an anthropological treatise
something maybe controversial that has been driving me BONKERS since the project hail mary book first came out that i finally just had to dig into my anthropology MA to bitch about:
it's fucking batshit that andy weir wrote the eridians as wearing clothes. there is no reason that eridians would ever develop something akin to human clothing.
like. do you know how long humans (not just hairy early hominin relatives of our, but straight-up anatomically modern homo sapiens) were rocking nothing but our birthday suits? LIKE NINETY THOUSAND FUCKING YEARS. HUMANS HAVE BEEN NAKED ALMOST THE WHOLE TIME WE'VE BEEN HUMANS, and we're famously leaky hairless apes, not hard-carapaced crab spiders with piston joints who live in boiling ammonia.
As much as I like the headcanon that Rocky, specifically, has been running around naked because he kind of went crazy after being alone on a spaceship for decades, didn't bother putting a shirt on for first contact, and then had to double down on it, you are correct.
With the addition that I think their echolocation can just go through clothing anyway? And that if their clothing was a material that blocked or scattered sound enough to not be effectively transparent to other eridians, isn't their sense of hearing distributed across their whole body surface so they'd be effectively "blindfolding" themselves?
^ thank you! All excellent points!
There's a lot of things where Andy "No Politics" Weir just straight up didn't question why we do things the way we do them and whether Eridians might do then differently. In the Eridian lore doc he briefly addresses their written language and says that 'printed writing takes the form of holes in the page so that the book takes up less space' and I was like hang on ... you just assumed that books-with-pages are the default? They're not even the default for most of human recorded history! I feel like if something felt more "culture" than "science" Weir just decided not to think about it.
i will never get over the fact that the eridian lore doc's section on heat rejection is 5x longer than the ENTIRE eridian culture/history section. reeeeeeally showing his priorities there lol. again, i get that weir has a very hard-science-based scifi focus which is cool & all but you simply cannot divorce the reality of 'soft' science as a whole from your otherwise-intended-to-be-plausible worldbuilding like this (at least not without getting bullied online by me). read some ursula k. leguin social-science-based scifi, weir!
True equality was reached in Jurassic Park 1993 with Robert Muldoon and Dr. Ellie Sattler wearing the same length shorts.
It was nice not having to cover them in blood and soot this time
Appreciation for The Data Stance
I think the reason modern vernacular sounds really off in the new Star Trek shows is because the old writers treated Star Trek as a period piece and purposefully scrubbed the language of as many time-period identifiers as they could.
Small things slip in occasionally, and it’s usually limited to certain characters. Geordi speaks more casually than Picard, Picard speaks more casually than Worf, etc. But Star Trek has always had, as Patrick Stewart puts it, “elevated language” to enhance the sense that we are watching something in a time set apart from our own. I'm not just postulating here, multiple writers talk about this in behind the scenes content.
Language usage is vital for world building. This is a writing 101 rule.
Imagine if Mr. Darcy told Elizabeth Bennett that he thought she was “super hot”. Or if he even said “that’s cool”. It would sound ridiculous, right?
With futuristic periods, some writers like to create slang. This has mixed results and is usually distracting. So, the OG Trek teams did the other option which is to keep language formal. Scrub it. Slang changes by the year, formal language changes by the century. This also adds to the disciplined setting of Starfleet.
I know the new writing teams think the mid 2020’s style speech is “more relatable” but it’s actually a pretty big technical blunder on the world-building front. It will also result in the shows aging poorly because now they’ve been branded with period-specific language that will inevitably go out of use. Which is something the older shows have largely avoided.
