you can't always rely on "believe survivors" as a buzzphrase, because it's an extremely common abuse tactic to try to obscure the truth of who is actually the survivor and who is the perpetrator. this is especially easy to do against marginalized groups that people are already primed to imagine as violent. you have to first collect enough information to know who is actually the survivor in order to actually believe the survivor and not their abuser

a lot has been written about how nobody would ever falsify an accusation of rape, and like, I get why. accusations against white men are rarely believed or taken seriously. people often treat those who come forward about white men's actions like shit. people largely do not give a shit about survivors and they do not take sexual assault seriously. against a white man there truly is rarely anything to gain by coming forward, let alone fabricating an accusation

this is not true, however, about demographics you are socially and systemically incentivized to whip. demographics who have been routinely scapegoated by media and government. the reason an accusation against a trans woman is widely believed and taken seriously is not because people spontaneously start caring about survivors if the accused is a trans woman. the reason is literally just bigotry

whipping the whipping girl is what you're already incentivized to do. an accusation provides permission to whip as hard as you like. a trans woman's rapist will happily hand you the whip. you have to ensure you are not being recruited as an accomplice in their abuse

Obon Festival

Obon (お盆) is an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one’s ancestors. It is believed that each year during obon, the ancestors’ spirits return to this world in order to visit their relatives.

Traditionally, lanterns are hung in front of houses to guide the ancestors’ spirits, obon dances (bon odori) are performed, graves are visited and food offerings are made at house altars and temples. At the end of Obon, floating lanterns are put into rivers, lakes and seas in order to guide the spirits back into their world. The customs followed vary strongly from region to region.

Obon is observed around the 15th day of the 7th month of the year, which is July according to the solar calendar; however, it roughly corresponds to August according to the formerly used lunar calendar. As a result, Obon is mainly observed from August 13 to 16, although in some areas it is also observed in mid July.

The Obon week in mid August is one of Japan’s three major holiday seasons (alongside New Year and Golden Week), accompanied by intensive domestic and international travel activities and increased accommodation rates. In recent years, travel activitiy in mid August has become somewhat more spread out and less concentrated, but it is still considerable on certain days.

I'm sure false etymology posts aren't like actually more common than any other type of misinformation on this website, it just happens to be a type of misinformation I'm better at spotting and a type of misinformation that shows up in the type of posts people I follow tend to reblog. but dang false etymology posts sure are common

tips for spotting false etymology:

if you happen to know what common greek and latin roots mean you can spot someone mistranslating them, which comes in handy very often

normal sounding words are almost never coined as acronyms. if someone claims something is an acronym you should literally always fact check it

sometimes the story presented by a proposed etymology falls apart if you like. think about it. why would a hypothetical continent be named after an animal speculated to not live there? why would an idiom's original form be something that very obviously sounds like something you'd say as a comeback to the version everyone already knows?

that one happens enough to get its own numbered point on this list, if someone claims a common expression is the "short version" of another older phrase that means the opposite thing they are either lying or uncritically repeating something they saw on tumblr once. you almost don't even need to fact check this, you can just assume they're wrong
