"Aww, somebody got a cute text from their wife," Chifuyu teases, grinning wide over at Takemichi, who's beaming at his phone as if it's showing him the most beautiful thing in the world. Well, to him, it probably is.
"Shut up! Hina-chan just sent me a really cute selfie," Takemichi gloats with glowing cheeks and shows off his screen to everyone at the table.
Hakkai, Chifuyu, and Takemichi have a habit of dropping by you and Mitsuya's shared apartment. Your boyfriend was supposed to be off work today to hang out, but he had to take care of an emergency at the studio. You hardly mind entertaining them, finding their presence akin to having a family full of rambunctious boys.
"Man, you're so lucky! I wish I had a girlfriend who would send me cute pictures," Chifuyu grumbles and slouches against the table.
"Simp," Hakkai scoffs, though he smiles when he sees Hina's picture.
"I think it's cute that you still get excited receiving pictures from her after all these years," you say wistfully.
"I bet Mitsuya feels the same when you send him a selfie," Takemichi beams.
You tilt your head and raise a brow.
"Is that something couples are supposed to do?"
All three of the guys slap their hands on the table and lean towards you as if you said something to upset them.
"That's like, one of the top benefits to being in a relationship: Exclusive photos!" Chifuyu nearly barks.
"Gee, here I am sending Taka-chan all my sample photos as soon as I receive them from a shoot," Hakkai says unassumingly.
"You don't exchange pictures at all?" Takemichi asks. His face is pale as though you told him you run a children's fighting ring in your spare time instead.
"He knows what I look like. We see each other every day." You shrug.
"You don't understand a man's heart at all," Chifuyu laments dramatically.
"Quick, Hakkai! Your phone!"
Hakkai seems to know exactly what Takemichi's yelling about. He quickly unlocks his phone and holds the screen to your face, giving you an eyeful of your boyfriend's handsome side profile taken candidly a few years ago back when he was still dying his hair. You can't help yourself from smiling at the image, reminded of how much time you spend in the early morning hours glancing over at him while he sleeps and questioning how anyone could be so perfect.
"Oh look at that smile! You are a sap!" Chifuyu chuckles, pointing out the soft smile on your face and the drunken look in your eyes.
"See! Mitsuya would have the same reaction if you sent him a picture," Takemichi says, making you roll your eyes at how he acts like he's the love guru of the group for being in the longest ongoing relationship.
"Takashi isn't like you guys. I don't think he gets excited about that stuff. At best, he'd probably look at it and go, cool," you say, doing your best imitation of Mitsuya's voice.
You try to ignore the odd strain in your chest and the fuzzy feeling on the back of your neck. You don't think you're wrong, but part of you wishes you were.
Hakkai speaks and narrows his eyes at you, "If you're sure about that, then send him a pic right now."
You know what he's really saying: "I've known him longer and I know him better than you."
You sigh, pulling your phone out of your back pocket and opening up the front camera.
The boys watch with interest as you move your arm around and twist your body, looking for the best light and angle, and testing out different smiles and expressions. This goes on for all but a minute before you frown and let your phone flop out of your hand and onto the table in defeat.
"Whatever," you huff.
"Don't give up! It's just a picture. We'll take one for you," Takemichi tries to encourage you. Even Hakkai looks perturbed at you giving up so easily.
"It's fine. He'll see us all when he comes home from work," you brush it off with a smile and stand up.
You excuse yourself to bring more snacks from the kitchen. Your heart feels a little funny. You know it isn't a big deal, but there's a part of you that fears having the audacity to think you look nice enough to bother Mitsuya with a reminder of something he's seen a thousand times before, and receiving a predictably mild reaction.
Mitsuya is great, the ultimate dream in terms of a relationship. Never once has he ever made you feel lesser or bothersome. It's taken you some time even to feel secure with feeling so secure with someone. You're always wondering why your relationship works so well, and while you can credit most of it to Mitsuya's reasonable and sympathetic nature, the main reason why you think it works is that you two allow yourselves a fair amount of independence. No need to constantly inundate him with reminders of your presence. You're sure living together is reminder enough.
You're certainly reminded of him when you bring back some snacks and bottled drinks to the living room and see his lifelong friends leaning on one another like littermates as they scroll their phones. Even when he's traveling for work, it still feels like he's around when Mana and Luna stop by after cram school. Hell, most of the clothes you wear are made by him.
Your heart stops for a moment when you wonder if you're that present in his life.
Maybe the boys are right.
Before you can worry about it too much, Chifuyu is asking you if you can set up the Switch so all of you can play Mario Kart. Soon enough you're hunched over trying to concentrate on catching up to Takemichi as Hakkai gripes about being electrocuted out of first place. A few races turn into rounds of Smash instead. Takemichi and Hakkai are horrible at it, leaving you and Chifuyu duking it out well past the 100% mark on your damage meters.
"I'm home."
You're not sure why, but you flinch and let Chifuyu's Fox knock your Samus off a cliff when you hear Mitsuya's voice. You were so absorbed in the game that you don't even hear the door to your apartment open and close. You turn your head and see your boyfriend's lavender eyes looking at the guys sharply before settling in on you. Something is telling you that he's irritated despite his neutral expression.
"Welcome back. You're home early," you say, quickly getting up and ignoring Chifuyu's victory celebration.
Mitsuya's face softens when you climb over the back of the couch to stand in front of him.
"Was everything okay at work?" You ask, reaching to touch his cheek with your palm. Your worry overrides any concerns about PDA.
"It's fine. I fixed the problem. Just wanted to get out of there and come home," he answers and turns his jaw to place a kiss on the heel of your palm before moving to take your spot on the couch.
You relax as he exchanges greetings with his friends, who excitedly bombard him with questions and anecdotes. Hakkai and Takemichi nearly talk over one another, happy to see their friend until Chifuyu clears his throat a little too loudly.
"Oh! We promised Inui that we'd help him with that thing at the bike shop!"
"Huh? The shop is close– ow! Oh, yeah the shop is closed today so it's the perfect time to work on that, uh, thing," Takemichi fumbles as he sheepishly darts his eyes between Hakkai and Chifuyu.
You raise a brow and Mitsuya narrows his eyes at the suspicious blunder. You ask if they're sure that they have to go since he just got home, but they all smile and insist, slapping Mitsuya on the back as they say their farewells and apologies for cutting their visit short, and seem to hustle out of your apartment all too quickly.
When the door clicks behind them, you go to comment on the strange flurry that just happened. However, Mitsuya is on you in an instant, wrapping his arms around you and walking you backward until you fall into the couch. You yelp in surprise and he lets go to catch himself by his hands on either side of your head.
"Is everything alright?" You ask tentatively, heart racing as you look up at him and try to read the impassive look on his face.
"Yeah. I'm sorry I had to work on my day off," he says. He doesn't take his eyes off you, and you still suspect he's bothered about something.
"Hm? It's fine. I wasn't lonely with the boys around. I'm glad you're home now, though," you tell him, smiling at him gently.
"Did you say something to them?"
You tilt your head against the cushion and give him a concerned look. Mitsuya huffs through his nose and shifts his weight to one arm as he pulls his phone out and taps a few buttons before showing you the screen.
Your eyes go wide and you wish the couch would just swallow you up when you see a text thread and numerous candid photos taken of you in the last hour. There are little messages beneath each one, each seemingly harmless – "cute outfit, did you make it?" from Takemichi, "mitsuya come home soon” from Chifuyu, and a simple heart emoji from Hakkai. You didn’t think they’d go that far.
“That’s– They were just shocked that I don’t send you pictures of myself when you’re away. I think they’re just messing with me,” you say flippantly, hoping that the intense burning in your neck and ears will ease off.
Mitsuya looks you over with keen eyes and then sighs before dropping his weight on you.
“I thought you were mad at me for leaving you for work,” he says muffled into the space by your neck.
“I’d never be! I know your work is important to you,” you tell him and wrap your arms around him, running your fingertips through the short dark hairs at the base of his skull.
“Yeah, but it’s still work. I don’t want to spend my day off doing it, especially knowing you’re here looking all cute,” he grumbles.
“Stop!” You giggle bashfully. “You would’ve seen me soon anyways.”
“I know, but as soon as I saw the pictures, I got distracted. Kinda half-assed the fix to get home sooner.”
“Don’t half-ass your work because of me! I knew I was right not to bother you with selfies and such,” you sigh, though you don’t think your face could feel any warmer without melting off.
“No, please bother me more,” Mitsuya says and moves his face to hover above yours. The tip of his nose grazes your cheek as he leans in, his breath warm on your lips.
“You’re not sick of my face?”
“Don’t be ridiculous."
He kisses you smooth and slow, and presses himself further into you until you feel the need to gasp for air. He's going to show you just how much he likes being reminded of you.
