“Essek wouldn’t tell Trent all that” Essek would absolutely tell Trent all that. Essek agreed to teach an empire mage dunamacy because he made a cat paw and needed to keep an eye on him, and started hurling blasphemy around at dinner with people he barely knew because they were nice to him. And Trent is a notorious manipulative son-of-a-bitch, good at convincing people he’s trust worthy and correct even though he’s clearly a piece of slime given human form. Essek is the loneliest bitch living in the wastes of the god war, it is not nearly as difficult as it should be given his position to get him to show his hand because he’s so alone that he’s absolutely chomping at the bit to be able to talk about it with someone. And offering shit like this is how Trent gets people under his fuckass wings. So, unfortunately, regrettably, Essek “Lord Lord from Around” Theylss would tell Trent all that.

Plus, Trent was actively exhausting Essek. He was psychologically torturing Essek subtly by pushing him to keep reopening the Beacon. To bring in another and another and another victim test subject. Trent was actively pushing Essek to his breaking point so that he'd be more easily swayed to agree to teach him how to open/use the Beacon.

And Essek, tired, magically exhausted, in pain, so fucking lonely, caved. And realized far too late the grave mistake he had made.
