Some women are conditioned to be fragile and weak, and to believe that it's a sin to outperform a man. Her feminism would involve allowing women to be strong.
Some women are expected to be strong at times when they can't. Her feminism would involve reassuring her that it's okay to not be strong.
Some neurodivergent people are raised to believe that they're too stupid to ever amount to anything. Their disability activism would involve reassuring them that they're capable.
Some neurodivergent people are raised to believe that they're smart and gifted, and are expected to live up to impossible standards. Their disability activism would involve allowing them to fail, make mistakes, be stupid, etc.
Some children are constantly reminded "you're the child, I'm the adult" in order to deny their autonomy. Their youth rights activism would involve treating them like an adult at times when they feel ready for it.
Some children are treated like adults in order to justify increased expectations or to downplay abuse against them. Their youth rights activism would involve allowing them to be a child.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to oppression. Each individual person's experience is different. Whatever trauma is caused by their oppression, the activism should focus on undoing it.
Thinking about junk heirlooms.
I don't mean family heirlooms that feel like junk but that you can't get rid of because they're important. I mean the opposite -- things of no importance that were passed down through generations incidentally.
My grandmother owned a dish towel with a distinct checkerboard pattern. It wasn't important to her, just one of many dish towels. When she died my parents kept some of her stuff because of sentimental value, but some just because it was perfectly fine stuff they could use, and they ended up with it.
Years later I was moving to another state and my parents asked if I needed any old towels since they were getting new ones. I got a box of rags, which included my grandmother's dish towel (which had been downgraded to 'rag' by then, tbh it was in that category even when my grandmother owned it.) I literally have a rag that's been passed down through multiple generations.
It's not sentimental or anything, I still use it as a rag, but sometimes I look at it and picture it on the handle of my grandmother's oven door and feel shrimp emotions.

Hey you ever think about The Characters so much to the point where
Even worse when you can't articulate your own thoughts and it just ends up feeling like this
i have so many hobbies and interests but each day the four horsemen (instant gratification, shortened attention span, procrastination, exhaustion) grab me by the throat and shake me until i collapse in my comfy bed
Re: the tags in your answer for nibs. Is there noodlers drama???
the noodlers guy has always been a shithead but for over a decade i have watched pen enthusiasts shrug and say "haha, that wacky libertarian noodlers guy!" and ignore that he made inks like
this isn't a new thing, the whole reason he built up a following was that he sold american-made artisanal inks with properties like being waterproof or making it impossible to forge checks. he had a real fixation on check forgery. there was a lot of libertarian, borderline sovcit shit going on with him from the beginning.
whenever anyone brought it up it was like "let's not talk about politics, agree to disagree, stay on topic everyone" because fountain pen enthusiasts are sometimes artists but also sometimes rich assholes spending thousands of dollars on a pen that looks like garbage. reddit mods on the most popular pen subreddits would immediately lock any attempt at a discussion about this guy's politics. also everyone just shrugged about noodlers absolutely abysmal quality control. fucking mess all around.
anyway someone finally made a post on reddit while the mods were asleep or something to say "hey what's up with the antisemitic ink" and a bunch of people were SHOCKED and HORRIFIED to learn that the noodlers guy was a nightmare. in fairness there was definitely a large swathe of people who never actually bought his shit and had no idea about it because of how quickly discussions would get squashed. it blew up enough that it couldn't really get swept under any rugs and got to the point that different sellers had to make announcements that they wouldn't carry his ink anymore, noodlers guy apologized and insisted he had no idea that bad things were bad and gave money to the adl, etc etc he literally made an ink label complaining about hr department tyranny and the decline of """western civilization""" why would anyone believe this man.
part of the blowup was that the goulet family, owner of goulet pens, said they were very saddened but also he was their friend and they knew him and he definitely didn't have any hate in his heart because he just cares a lot about the free market and freedom of speech and fiscal responsibility. just a profound density of conservative dogwhistles favored by people who know better than to say the quiet part loud. which is why i don't buy from goulet anymore.
these days i do my pen ogling on anderson pens because they dropped noodlers like a hot potato and i like their vibe
you will be shocked to learn that reddit just noticed goulet might be a shithead who's good at keeping his mouth shut
The Goulets have been linked (pictures on Instagram and/or other social media) to starting a new branch of the Christian Cornerstone church, in their area. Their church is a sister church to a Christian Vertical Church which has had some very public and very pointed comments about their anti-LGBTQ+ stance. It is unclear at this time if the Cornerstone church will actually follow—or has to follow, for that matter—the views of the Vertical church.
According to a Discord announcement post on the official Goulet Discord, they state that the views that started this whole thing were made by “one member,” and do not reflect the views of the Goulets or other church members. They also do not wish to discuss the matter any further.
Uh, doubt. Sorry, I'm supposed to believe that one member, on a podcast hosted on the church's website, said this stuff, and no one else in that church harbors similar views? This guy just came up with that take entirely on his own, and during the interview itself and then the editing and posting process, at no point did anyone in the church hierarchy (the hierarchy who have their membership sign a covenant to stay in line with church teachings!) step in and say, "Hey, uh, we're not gonna put that crap on our website"? That's almost as insulting as what was actually said, that they genuinely think anyone would believe that shtuss.
how to find literally any post on a blog in seconds (on desktop)
there are so many posts about ~tumblr is so broken, you can’t find any post on your own blog, it’s impossible, bluhrblub~
I am here to tell you otherwise! it is in fact INCREDIBLY easy to find a post on a blog if you’re on desktop/browser and you know what you’re doing:
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant. every single post, every single time. in chronological order starting with the most recent post. note: it will not find #croissants or that time you made the typo #croidnssants. for a tag with multiple words, it’s just /tagged/my-croissant and it will show you everything with the exact phrase #my croissant
url.tumblr.com/tagged/croissant/chrono will bring up EVERY post on the blog tagged with the exact phrase #croissant, but it will show them in reverse order with the oldest first
url.tumblr.com/search/croissant isn’t as perfect at finding everything, but it’s generally loads better than the search on mobile. it will find a good array of posts that have the word croissant in them somewhere. could be in the body of the post (op captioned it “look at my croissant”) or in the tags (#man I want a croissant). it won’t necessarily find EVERYTHING like /tagged/ does, but I find it’s still more reliable than search on mobile. you can sometimes even find posts by a specific user by searching their url. also, unlike whatever random assortment tumblr mobile pulls up, it will still show them in a more logically chronological order
url.tumblr.com/day/2020/11/05 will show you every post on the blog from november 5th, 2020, in case you’re taking a break from croissants to look for destiel election memes
url.tumblr.com/archive/ is search paradise. easily go to a particular month and see all posts as thumbnails! search by post type! search by tags but as thumbnails now
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio will show you every audio post on your blog (you can also filter by other post types). sometimes a little imperfect if you’re looking for a video when the op embedded the video in a text post instead of posting as a video post, etc
url.tumblr.com/archive/tagged/croissant will show you EVERY post on the blog tagged with the specific and exact phrase #croissant, but it will show you them in the archive thumbnail view divided by months. very useful if you’re looking for a specific picture of a croissant that was reblogged 6 months ago and want to be able to scan for it quickly
url.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/audio/tagged/croissant will show you every audio post tagged with the specific phrase #croissant (you can also filter by photo or text instead, because I don’t know why you have audio posts tagged croissant)
the tag system on desktop tumblr is GENUINELY amazing for searching within a specific blog!
caveat: this assumes a person HAS a desktop theme (or “custom theme”) enabled. a “custom theme” is url.tumblr.com, as opposed to tumblr.com/url. I’ve heard you have to opt-into the former now, when it used to be the default, so not everyone HAS a custom theme where you can use all those neat url tricks.
if the person doesn’t have a “custom theme” enabled, you’re beholden to the search bar. still, I’ve found the search bar on tumblr.com/url is WAY more reliable than search on mobile. for starters, it tends to bring posts up in a sensible order, instead of dredging up random posts from 2013 before anything else
if you’re on mobile, I’m sorry. godspeed and good luck finding anything. (my one tip is that if you’re able to click ON a tag rather than go through the search bar, you’ll have better luck. if your mutual has recently reblogged a post tagged #croissant, you can click #croissant and it’ll bring up everything tagged #croissant just like /tagged/croissant. but if there’s no readily available tag to click on, you have to rely on the mobile search bar and its weird bizarre whims)
the archive/tagged trick is a lifesaver!!
a caveat on op’s caveat is that if your blog/the blog you want to search is older than [whenever they forced everybody into the tumblr.com/user change], most of these tricks will still work whether or not they have enabled “custom theme.”
tumblr works it’s just a closely guarded secret
comics as an art form make me insane. they’re so difficult to do well. there’s so many different ways to make sequential art work and most of them are deeply unintuitive. onomatopoeia that feels completely ridiculous to put down often reads seamlessly. panels on a page become a fractally nested image composition challenge that’s only possible to lose because if you do a good job no one will notice. you have to direct the readers’ eyes on a specific path across the page but also account for the fact that they won’t follow it. comic time isn’t linear. if the order of events isn’t crystal clear the story becomes incomprehensible. sometimes you need to do this on purpose. all this for a medium almost universally considered less effective than animation and less respectable than plain text. even its own name doesn’t take it seriously
it's kinda comforting to me when my friends are a little annoying or longwinded or abrasive or tired and inarticulate, or they don't do the exact politest thing in every interaction, and stuff, because I know I'm sometimes annoying, or take up a more than my share of conversational space, or forget to ask them questions, etc etc, and... like, I'm always working to be nice to my friends and to get better and better at friend-ing, but it just makes me feel more human about it :}
anyway I love you friends plz know I'm not counting, in fact I feel great affection toward you even (especially) when conversations go less than Perfectly Ideal
I'm not proud to say it but this line from a 60 year old detective novel made me re-think some things about friendship
This is what Rasputin would've wanted.
I feel like I'm being seduced like one of those fancy rainforest birds
is it working
Yes
Found in the ask box this AM
”I've been playing with [a major AI-driven chat bot] and I asked it to write a young wizards fanfic that contains dialogue. ...I wish i could paste it here, but the character limit won't let me.”
(hiding eyes)
(a) Once more, the reminder: please, please don't send me story ideas or fics set in my universes. Reading them would expose me legally in ways I can't permit. If such things turn up in my ask box, I delete them unread. If through a lapse of concentration or some similar error I find myself mistakenly reading a story idea or fic, I am required to make a note of it for legal purposes, and then can never use those ideas in my own writing, ever, anywhere.
So please understand that sending me a story idea or a fic set in my universes (or others where I write) will guarantee that the idea never happens in my work. It may seem paradoxical and/or counterintuitive, but if you have an idea that you wish I'd do something with, the odds of that happening are significantly increased by you making sure that I never see it.
(This, BTW, is one of the reasons I had to close my ask box to anon asks; some repeat offenders were making it impossible for me to protect myself... as when people refuse to stop sending me such things, I block them. My apologies to all the well-intentioned would-be nonnies out there—but the actions of some of you have destroyed an avenue of access for everybody else.)
(b) Please do not purposefully expose my IPs to the attention of any AI/LLM-based chat platform, anywhere. Unscrupulous whole-book AI-oriented scraping has stolen enough of my stuff already this year. (As my search of the Books3 pirated books database, widely used for AI training, shows here.) It's infuriating enough that bad actors have taken my writing and will be using the expertise inherent in it to put other living, breathing writers out of work. Please don't help them do more of that.
(sigh) Thanks.
All same.
I don't have any real followers, I don't think, but I'll throw this message-in-a-bottle out into the ocean, I guess.
Does anyone remember that trend of "Character Memes" on Deviantart, like, in the early 2000's? I wanna talk about those.
Facts:
Inklings and Simon Belmont both appear in Smash Bros.
Respawn points are canonically a real technology in the Splatoon universe, and it's impossible for an Inkling to permanently die while they're synchronised with one.
Simon Belmont is canonically Christian.
This information in mind, I want you to imagine Simon Belmont trying to explain the miracle of the Resurrection to an Inkling.
"So, it's like God and the Devil are in a great big 'Turf War,' but instead of 'Inking Territory,' it's about the moral condition of mankind's souls. In that sense, the death and resurrection of our Redeemer is like a supercharged 'Booyeah Bomb' that covers a lot of territory at once..."
#in my art history courses i was taught that all art#all art ever made#has both an element of the sacred and an element of the erotic
the inherent eroticism of pokemon: the movie: mewtwo strikes back
This is framed like it's some kind of "gotcha!" But children's cartoons are basically easy mode for this concept because they're usually stripped bare of anything society at large considers strongly morally questionable so you can really see the contrasts easily.
Take the human characters. They all wear clothes, clothes that cover their genitals. Women characters may wear pants or shorts but always cover their chests. This is in contrast to cultures that consider women's hair to be too private to be shown in public- the female characters in Pokemon by and large do not employ a headscarf nor are they banned from wearing pants. Using this information you can get a baseline for the level of eroticism considered appropriate for all audiences in the culture the film came from.
Compare it to art you might see in an indigenous African nation where women's breasts are not considered inappropriate. Would women be bare chested in their version of the Pokémon cartoon, if they'd made one? Would you be shocked to see it on TV?
Then take the pokemon themselves. Many pokemon have near human or above human intelligence, but being basically animals, none of them wear clothes. Yet despite being essentially animals and being fully nude, none of them are depicted with visible genitalia either, even on animals where it's very visible on the real life counterpart.
Using this information you can infer that the presence of genitalia has no non-erotic purpose in the mind of the society that created the film. Not even an animal is permitted to simply exist nakedly in a nonsexual context. Despite the relatively liberal sensibilities behind allowing Misty to wear shorts, the creators of the work are adhering to a set of rules that treat any and all genitalia or even breasts as something to be censored or removed and the beings therein to be rendered sexless, with only certain context clues or other forms of gendered coding telling you what animal is meant to be male or female.
Now, Japan has different sensibilities about nudity than America, with bath houses and shared baths being much more common there than here- but any media depicting this is not likely to have as much mass market wide appeal as something more closely aligned to American sensibilities.
If you look closely you can see this American aversion towards any depiction of genitalia in lots of films other than Pokemon. You can even find a lot of more abstract fetishes in American cartoons, but you will almost never see a nakee body or even a pair of breasts and even shirtless male characters are often depicted without nipples.
There was an entire internal debate on the set of Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron on whether or not it was appropriate to draw the titular stallion with a sheath or if he should be smooth like a Ken doll because secretly while Americans like to believe they're very free and modern they're so scared of nudity they can't even handle looking at a nude animal without being weird about it.
There is, to put it bluntly, a whole lot of information regarding the author's attitudes towards the erotic in cartoons. Not being able or willing to parse that information doesn't mean it isn't in there man.
Everyone's so upset about what's going on on my normal and functional space ship.
Excellent you can join ranks with that one doctor who this story made late for surgery
#same#started reading suddenly it was 5 fucking am
Read about my normal and functional spaceship to absolutely destroy your sleep schedule
This happened to me with their (now finished) serial novel Curse Words, and then their (currently unfinished) story Charlie MacNamara, Galactic Ace when I caught up to Curse Words while it was still in progress.
Simply put, it’s just a thing that happens when it comes to reading Derin’s stories.
I've been reliably informed by many, many readers that these stories are specifically crack for ADHD people who usually have difficulty reading and I HAVE NO IDEA WHY. That's such a random demographic.
Look it happens
#cannot start reading it is already Late
Do you have to do surgery tomorrow? No? Then how bad could it be to start reading.
#me watching horror movies: noooo why would you open the door covered in warnings not to do that!#me reading thos blog post: I should start reading time to orbit
You should do it, nothing will go wrong. You are the master of your sleep schedule and will get plenty of rest. It'll be fine.
#I am one sentence in and my suspected adhd brain started to fucking. VIBRATE#what the FUCK#I am so happy and am going to get a normal amount of sleep tonight
Ahaha yes another one
Join the ADHD Reader Army
Congratulations, you did invent time travel after all! Unfortunately, instead of the Soviet moon conspiracy thing, all it’s good for is warping your readers several hours into the future.
... I'll take it.
#why is it always 3:30 when I spot this post
Because that's the ideal time to start reading the story
Congratulations for creating an infohazard for ADHD people specifically
#i'm at work and it's 9am#I should totally read this instead of work right?#what's the worst that could happen?
Yes you should
