Was genuinely so thrilled to pick up a copy of the book of dust today and realize that the sticker on the front is actually a STICKER and not some monstrosity printed with the cover that you can't remove it and having checked it's the same for all three of the series and I already liked them but it's just so nice to have noticed something positive when everything is AI and plagiarism and things becoming more commercial and inconvenient.

And they have pictures. Relevant illustrations. By a real artist. They've bothered caring how we read and experience it (and I'm saying they cos I dont know how much controll Philip gets over it)
It's been almost 10 years since the first book of dust and they've maintained their integrity

"fun fact: as a DV survivor i cannot register to vote because doing so makes my address public. anyone who is fleeing or hiding from an abuser is automatically disenfranchised from the political process and this is a feature, not a bug"]
I don’t know of the original poster might not be aware
but!
if you’ve been a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking, you can enroll into the address confidentiality program (free of cost!) and be registered to vote as an absentee voter and your name and address will not be made available for the public
it is super easy to get enrolled - the application takes like 5 minutes, but it has to be with someone who is certified to do it (most likely an advocate! try going to a family justice center in your area or calling the Attorney Generals office in your area!!!!)
ALSO :
you don’t need to have any police reports or have a protection order to qualify!!! you just have to sign stating that you’ve been a victim of one of the aforementioned crimes.
sometimes I’m reminded that there are still people who don’t know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers — and the site’s sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms — and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.
you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.
ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.
ao3’s main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.
there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I don’t want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you won’t see the things you don’t want to see.
it’s your job to curate what you see. it’s not other people’s jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.
also you cannot censor “only the things you personally hate” without expecting everything else, that isn’t of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think “why do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? they’re grooming children”.
if you allow the things that you hate to be censored — because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.
I was going to save this to go in my review/suggested changes for the Mandalorian movie, but it’s concise enough I want to share it now:
There are a lot of ways the movie fails because of a lack of specificity to the characters and the story, but also to just the worldbuilding. The whole salt thing on Shakari is what comes to mind first: salt isn’t shown to be a necessity here, it’s a commodity. The concept doesn’t have any buildup into its inclusion, it’s not really that interesting, and it literally does not affect the main characters in any material way or carry any weight whatsoever. It’s just a way for the Ardennian vendor to tell Mando where to go next and it feels like the writers were trying to force worldbuilding to happen for there to be something more interesting to Shakari than the vague cyberpunk city vibes.
(We’ve seen cage matches and arena fights in Star Wars before, and that in and of itself isn’t a new concept). Rotta and the dejarik match are the only interesting things about this world to me.
If you want relevant worldbuilding specific to these characters and to this story that contributes to the world and raises the stakes, it’s not even that hard to edit/pivot just a little to the side to find something:
Make Shakari known for its cuisine and highlight the street food vendors some more. Show more than just the Ardennian, and highlight how much live catch you can choose from in the market and have prepared for you right then. Once you’ve shown all these space chickens and crab-fish or whatever, move on to the more sentient stuff like Kowakian monkey-lizards being roasted on kebabs with others in cages hanging nearby the closer you get to the arena (“Oh Hounds that’s so mean, how could you—!” oh boo hoo that exact thing is literally in THE PILOT EPISODE. OF THE SHOW. THIS MOVIE IS BASED ON.)
Additionally, since we as the audience already know that Hutts are known for eating stuff live and wriggling, contrasting Rotta with that by having him eat just like, normal food while also being willing to share food with the kid will have more weight to it and will contrast with the visuals the rest of the time around consumption at the expense of/detriment to others.
Now. Once we’ve established the exotic animal trade and competitive, diverse cuisine as part of Shakari all the way up to Din going to find Janu at the bar, him walking in to see all these little critters up in cages above an array of sushi chefs and giant open flame stir fry griddles down below is already going to set you up with a sense of unease, and it’s going to make the Iktotchi’s offer to buy/threat to the kid suddenly a lot more personal and direct. The whole bar fight is now suddenly about more than just making contact with Janu, it’s about making sure the kid isn’t the next thing on the menu.
If you want to strengthen Janu’s character and make him more specific at the same time, here’s where you have him eyeing the kid while he talks to Mando with an array of food set out before him that he picks from while the two of them bargain over Rotta. Make Janu look like the Hutt in this story and you’ve already made him a more interesting and intimidating and nasty villain.
Now when we see the kid in one of those cages at the dejarik match surrounded by a crowd of people buying roasted meat and stadium food made from the creatures we’ve seen up to now, it has a lot more weight. When Mando sees the kid upon his entrance it’s not just a generic fear of what might happen to the child, it’s a very specific fear of what might happen to him. Now your bad guys have a bargaining chip compelling Mando to fight Rotta beyond Rotta just going on the offense because as long as he does, the kid is safe. Mando understands that the second he shows any resistance or looks like he’s pulling his punches or looks like he’s going to yield, that he’s not going to put on a show, the kid is going to be put in immediate danger by the specific people he’s with.
The question then becomes, “How long can a Mandalorian fight?”
(And if you actually gave these fights consequences and showed Mando actually being affected and challenged and injured and beaten, the tension would have ratcheted up immediately. You know what should happen to a Mandalorian when it’s squashed by a creature that weighs a literal ton? Same thing that happens to everything else.)
None of that would have taken any more work or screentime than what we already see. The writers were able to convey the exact concept and tone of location in two seconds in the pilot episode of the show when Mando is walking through Nevarro on his way to see the Client. It doesn’t have to be overt until it is overt. It’s organic and builds off of everything before it without explicitly broadcasting “LOOK GUYS HERE’S SOME WORLDBUILDING,” it’s relevant to your main characters and affects the story in a very tangible way, and it’s a lot more interesting than rationing salt.
There was no point in the sacrifice of crowley and aziraphale. God's been already absent for two seasons (6000 years?). We weren't shown the effects of heaven and hell in lives of normal people anyway (except from occasional armageddon that mostly went unnoticed). I've never felt like people didn't have free will in the show. And angels and demons weren't that different from people in the first place. Also the new universe feels completely the same? The only ones that were really affected by toxicity of heaven are aziraphale and crowley. And they're dead.
I dont understand how anyone can possibly be mad about the ending, Jesus and the antichrist ended up together. there is literally nothing more we could have asked for
For all the discourse and chaos going on in the good omens fandom rn, I for one, am having a lot of fun writing fanfiction and I think we'd all feel a little better if we stopped ranting and started doing what fandom does best. Writing (or reading!) our own ending
everyone's talking about good omens 3 and the questionable ending but I need boots on the ground investigative journalism on why crowleys hair gradually reddens as the show goes on
The craziest part about that ending is how easy it would have been not to mess it up. It's not like the new writers had been written into a corner. It was so obvious throughout the entire show that Crowley and Aziraphale were supposed to spend the rest of eternity together and somehow instead the writers came up with the most convoluted, bizarre ending possible and made it seem necessary because of rules they made up literally seconds before. This is truly the worst timeline because who even thinks to do that???
so i'm gathering that Good Omens should have chosen "The Good Place" route, yet instead chose to hit the ol' Copy & Paste with minor editing... which i find depictions of heaven and hell and angels and demons in media would do much better if they instead chose "The Good Place" route
new chapter email in your inbox. oh! exciting! it’s an ao3 fic you’ve been following for years and years. that you’ve loved and commented on and you even found friends in the comment section. it’s the final chapter of an extremely long and plotty and funny and romantic fic. you open it. the tags have changed. suddenly it’s tagged major character death. that’s what watching the good omens finale felt like
I really thought that Aziraphale and Crowley were going to rewrite the Book of Life.
I really thought they were going to become the Illustrator and Author.
I really thought that's why all the books in the shop were made blank.
I really thought God wasn't going to actually exist in a true form, and instead be a kind of omnipresent power of creation.
I really thought that they were going to have their forced-proximity-making-up-with-each-other as they were required to work together to write the new Book of Life.
I really thought that they were going to choose *their* humanity and not a new one.
I really thought they would still be themselves at the end.
I really thought the moral of the story was that the humanity they had was worth protecting, and that life itself (whether mortal or otherwise) was beautiful and inherently important.
I really thought this story was about a love that transcends.
I understand the path they took. However. I do think it missed the mark on what the show was really trying to say.
the main problem with the good omens finale has nothing to do with kissing
there's definitely multiple problems, but if there's one main reason that people are unsatisfied, it's this: no one likes to watch the plot be undone at the end. there's no weaker premise than "it was all a dream" or "we went back in time and it never happened" or in this case "we erased the universe completely but heres a new one". it makes your audience feel cheated because the characters you see at the end aren't the same characters you just watched because they haven't had the same experiences. character growth is driven by experiences, and undoing the events is undoing the very characters we love. it was an insult to the audience to show us two different people named Anthony and Asa with completely different experiences and personalities fall in love and act like it mattered. if they wanted to destroy the universe in the name of a better humanity, fine. erase Aziraphale and Crowley. kill them off and let us watch a beautiful saying goodbye. give us a beautiful last scene and then end it. maybe give us a scene on new earth where everyone is happy and we see the things and people they cared about for a moment, and maybe we see a black item and white item next to each other and have it be this idea that their love is the fundamental base of that universe, blah blah blah whatever. but destroying them and cheapening their story to essentially an AU was, at heart, an insult to the audiences relationship with the characters.
yeah, they didn't kiss. they never needed to kiss and it's fine that they didn't. but an ending that requires the story before it to stop existing isn't an ending. it's bad writing. and it's deeply disappointing.
