Ralfe Band - Barricades (by HighlineRecs
From the brilliant new album "Son be Wise" - Ā and the video is co-directed by Julian Barratt! Ā
Saw the band live last night in Manchester - a magical gig, spoilt only by the fact we had to leave early to catch the last train home.Ā
This is my personal mantra every morning before I set out to work...
Ralfe Band - Come On Go Wild (by HighlineRecs)
Next time you find yourself lurking in the corner at a party, watching the disgusting fun unfold around you, start saying the word ādespairā out loud. Begin the incantation at conversational level, then increase the volume incrementally until someone asks you to leave. I guarantee youāll be bellowing at the top of your lungs before anyone even notices. If youāre lucky, someone elseāll join in, and then youāve made a new friend. I know; Iāve tried it myself.

the boosh fandom waiting for new stuff;
The rather lovely Oly Ralfe. Ā Please hurry up with the new album boys - I urgently need new Ralfe Band music in my life.

Undoubtedly cute, and pretty, and manages to bring out the motherly in me.Ā (Christ knows it takes a lot.)Ā And yet, still so frigginā annoying somehow.
Heās very much an introvertās comedian; I can see why some people might find him annoying, but only Amstell could write a āsitcom about depression, disconnectedness and isolationā (SA) and actually make it funny! Ā You really, really should watch Grandmasās House or āNumbā - I think youād love them. Ā āNumbā is on iPlayer atm - if you get the time check it out!
But what I find annoying is that Iām worse than him. I find him extremely extroverted, actually. ET-continue-explaining: which makes me so much worse than him, who already says heās the worst that can be, while heās having friends all over the world, looking gorgeous and being professionally funny. I just realised, writing this, Iād like him to acknowledge just once heās not the only one and not the worst off? He must have said that, surely? Once?
I know, I know... it can be hard to suspend disbelief when someone this successful and attractive goes on about how isolated, sad, depressed, etc, etc they are...I can see how that can be quite irritating.... to be fair though, he's self aware and self deprecating enough take the piss out of his own self pity and i'm glad he exists amongst the more glittery and brash comedians - he kind of validates being a certain type of angsty outsider - e.g. when he talks about having hated school parties so much "couldn't wait to turn 17 in order get a driving licence and drive away from all the fun" etc. Ā I dunno, I suppose I'm just a massive sucker for his awkward, sensitive outsider schtick - it feels real enough to me :)
āDouble the morphine and bring me Atticus Finch!ā
Love Simon Amstellās neurotic, honest, unblokey stand-up. Ā If youāve not seen Numb or the sublime āGrandmaās Houseā yet youāre missing out. Ā

The Hitcher's Speech: A Christmassy Message To The Nation
(The Hitcher has his back to the camera, and is mumbling. Itās not clear whether heās mumbling at someone who is just out of shot, or purely to himself. His back view: he is wearing a tweed pencil skirt, slightly baggy, and a pink angora high-necked sweater. Also a slightly greying chestnut wig, which is styled along the lines of a decorous little-old-lady bubble perm. He is wearing chunky-heeled oxblood brogues, and a small chihuahua languishes there at his feet. It is very still. Very still indeed. Itās probably stuffed. He coughs, chokes, swallows down a cigar stub and chokes some more, and turns around. His giant Polo monocle wobbles in his eye.)
HITCHER: What? Boy, what is that muck? You take that motherdiddling turkey and stick it up your chuff, bring me turkey pie and mash with a side order of pearly queen sago pud else Iāll cut you, boy, Iāll cut you deep and theyāll have to relocate your arse for your gentlemen callers to get better access.
(Off-screen murmur. Hitcher starts in faint surprise, turns around and leans and leers into the camera suspiciously.)

Don Kenn
Sinister, grotesque yet strangely cute. Love Don Kenn and his post-it-note art.

Another unmarked one + more reviews: Julian will probably enjoy these descriptions, but Iām starting to wonder how complimentary persuasively cynical and devious and horrifically plausible as creepy are ⦠*ggg* So far, the DM alone finds it a real turn off (while most others rightly say it doesnāt add anything to Nathan Barley) - so it must be good! But even DM revises itās opinion of Julianās whispery calm as āunderdoing itā to him being realistically sadistic ⦠canāt wait? *g*
