I've came to notice that I never did the "get to know me" kinda post that everyone pins on their blogs so... let's do it!

● My name is Laura, argentinian, born in 1992 (so you do the math!) aspiring writer... Publicist against her own career, reluctant interpreter (it pays the bills 🙄) NEWSFLASH: I got fired and hopefully I'll never go back to interpreting... sort of guitar player, I guess... creative beyond measure but too burned out to do stuff (and I hate it!).

● My main blog is @illegalbilingual but I haven't updated anything in years, at first because I got a job and I didn't have much free time... now because I still have a job that doesn't get me much free time + it's been so long that is kinda weird to go back... right?

• On the same vein my newest project Subtitles by Lau translates old classic argentinian movies to English so everybody can enjoy them (subtitles in Spanish and English are also for the Hearing Impaired). If you like what I do, you can support me on Patreon.

◇ If you wonder about my moniker or blog name, it is thanks to an Agatha Christie character (Mr. Harley Quin) he's such a weird turn into Christie's detective stories that I became obsessed so I tracked down as much as I could around her invention to discover that she inspired herself on the Commedia dell Arte where sometimes the Harlequin was invisible, something he took advantage of to cause havoc until was eventually captured and beaten up... given that I always (in school, highschool and college) tried to be invisible but all my teachers would always find me and put me front center as an example I was like "hey, just like me" and decided to adopt that name.

● I'm learning Russian in a Communitty Club from the Argentinian Slavic Community (we represent Belarus, Ukraine and Russia) where my great grandparents and grandmother used to go. I am a member of the Board of Directors and representative of the club in the KSORS (basically a Russian association devoted to lick Putin's boot overseas, but there are some cool people in it -mostly descendants like me that are also involved in other clubs and don't give a flying f*ck about pleasing Moscow and do what they want to do-).

● Even if I was born on the 90s I'm an 80s girl in both musical & movie taste (with exceptions, of course I don't live isolated of everything that is current but the musical landscape today isn't my jam... so you'll prey my 80s and 90s bands off my cold dead hands).

● What else? Well... you can read some of my stories (retellings of classic tales like):

♧ Cinderella (The Lady of the Well) (La Dama del Pozo)

♧ Snowhite (The Cursed Prince) (El Príncipe Maldito) <- this one got written at 4 AM in the morning, on my cellphone, there are a few mistakes that I fixed on the Word document I've saved but I didn't change here. So, shhh! don't be mean.

♧ Or one inspired by a throw-away-line said in The Sandman Netflix show (The Fish-wolf)

◇ And weirdly enough I decided to delve into fanfic (usually I create my own characters and stories, using other people's characters feels wrong) because sometimes an idea creeps in your mind and you just can't let go.

I am one big skeptic HOWEVER stuff has happened that I cannot deny.

1. Around age 7:

I was going next door to my aunt Irene's house with my grandmother. As any other child, instead of running/walking I was skipping on the empty sidewalk. My grandma was locking our door and I was half-way through the few meters that separate both houses... and then I felt a hand on my left shoulder (I could feel the palm's weight and the fingers and thumb dangling down my arm and clavicle). I turned as soon as it grabbed me thinking that it was my grandma but she was still at our door (and had varicose veins that caused her lots of pain, so she couldn't have run after touching me as a joke). I stopped skipping and just walked the remaining distance.

Around that time I would also feel someone touching my face while sleeping, I would wake up and there was nobody there.

2. At age 20/21

In my country sometimes a person would have to dig up their dead family members at the cementery to either change their location (from the ground to a niche or crypt) or to cremate them (with options to put them either in a niche/crypt or to take the ashes to their house). It is not a tradition, it is more like city cementeries run out of space rather quickly and need to use the ground again & again unless you pay "rent" for that location (ground/niche/crypt) so, it is cheaper to just cremate them and have them in your house.

I was in College and the time had come to cremate one of my grandfather's sisters. It was already done and my aunt Elena had brought her ashes home the day before. It was early in the morning and I was preparing to go to class, my grandpa and I were having breakfast (he used to go with me to the train station to take care of me till I was on my bus stop and then he would take his bus to go to work) and I was getting my stuff ready. Then I hear a "chist, chist" I went to my aunt thinking that she called me to the other room, but it wasn't her. Thinking that it could've been someone on the street, I went back to my stuff... and then I hear it again. Once again my aunt tells me that it wasn't her and, of course, it wasn't my grandpa either (and nobody else was awake at that time). I let it go despite of it happening again (I was convinced that my aunt was pulling my leg).

When I came back home after my classes my aunt tells me that she remembered that that very night she also heard a "chist, chist" but she said outloud "bah, leave me alone. Let me sleep" and it didn't bothered her anymore.

3. The year 2019, a very intense year for me (age 27

The first event was on a very early morning. I could feel like someone was watching me in my sleep and that their face was VERY close to mine. For whatever reason I knew that something bad would happened if I opened my eyes so I didn't until that sensation disappeared. When I did, I saw that it was 3 AM.

The second event is a shared one, so I know that I'm not crazy. I was preparing my merienda (argentinian equivalent to the 5 o'clock tea) and I started to hear a music box. I went to my aunt Elena's room that is right next to the kitchen to ask her which one was it. She told me that she thought that I was the one with the music box and of course I replied "why would I have a music box in the kitchen?". She then said "maybe is someone on the street" which I had my doubts about it because my neighbours aren't the kind that would appreciate a music box, still I went to the window to see if by chance there was a child playing with one... but the closer I got to the window, the music would faint to the point that I couldn't hear it anymore. I told her about it while going back to my previous position and I started to hear it again. I was next to an armoir where we keep all kinds of knick-knacks and I thought that perhaps it could've been something in there that got activated by a vibration. So I pressed my ear against the wood and not only I could hear it better but I could almost feel the mechanism moving. My aunt took it upon her to find out what it was, we checked all music boxes there but not only none of them was activated but their music was entirely different. She kept searching at home for other music boxes but it was futile, those weren't activated and the song was different. We didn't noticed that the music box had stopped at some point in our search and we weren't able to remember the tune either.

Third and last event.

I woke up very early in the morning, like 5 AM but it was clear because it was summer. I heard a scratching on the wall but it was my (then) puppy Benny that had found out that he liked to lick the sand that fell from it (he's weird, I know). So I turned around in bed, decided to keep on sleeping when I started to feel the pressure of two hands on my shoulders. Given that it felt like when my grandpa grabbed me by the shoulders (he was dead for 3 years by then), I didn't worry "my grandfather wouldn't hurt me" I thought and closed my eyes to try to fall asleep again. That pressure changed and little by little I started to feel like someone was spooning me "this is really awkward if this is my grandpa" I thought but I let it pass. I could feel knees behind my knees, the superior part of the legs, a hip, an arm in my back (the one that you don't know where to put it when spooning someone so it ends up kind of curled up inbetween both bodies), a hand grabbing my left arm from behind and the weight of another head behind mine in the pillow. It was uncomfortable but I kept going "well, if it is my grandpa: I'm fine". With my eyes closed I heard a female voice in my ear: "Hello". I opened my eyes really big because I just couldn't believe it, I wasn't able to hear the voice but I felt the air moving around my left ear as if someone was whispering. I closed my eyes and I was able to hear her again "...76. Artist... I'm here... to salute you. Let's be friends" every place where I was being touched started to feel hotter and hotter, the voice sounded like someone rather young (around 35 or 40) and like she was struggling to catch her breath. Now, I am skeptic but I'm not stupid: you just don't invite incorporeal voices to "be friends" so I asked out loud "Who?" (as in "Who are you?) and then the presence started to dissapear.

This reminds me a time I was interpreting a medical appointment and the answer to whatever the nurse asked was:

I can't

So I said in my heavily british-influenced English: I CAH-NT

The american nurse went silent for a moment and then: "I'm sorry interpreter, can you repeat?"

Me: I can't.

Nurse: What did you say?

Me: I can't.

Nurse: Are you saying "KEYNT"?

Me: 🤦🏻‍♀️ Yes 🙄

Aside from the linguistic aspect that is just extra fun for me... I get surprised by the narrative and writting choices of that time.

In here we see grandma, still dressed in a "old fashioned" way for the time (1951) but she seems to be far more modern than Isabel at least in her way of thinking. And this was writen by a man, no less!

"The town has a sheriff now" is a western-style musical comedy set in the Cuyan area of Argentina.

Sgt. Paniagua is dirty and as lazy as an officer can be. His little town (literally his, he founded it) sees itself upside-down when a bandit called El Negro (not the slur, we use that nickname for everyone in Argentina) comes to town.

Small piece of Kentucky lore: There is a Versailles, Kentucky and it is pronounced ver-SALES. Unlike the Versailles in France, which is pronounced normal. It's not that we don't know how to pronounce Versailles, France, it's just that Kentucky Versailles is a different one and it's pronounced ver-SALES.

This is one of the easiest ways to clock someone who isn't from here
