Very Quick Intro

Hello, I'm Marie (Or Harper)! I like Greek mythology mostly, sometimes comics. Usually I think about Hecuba, Atalanta, Paris, the House of Atreus, and just the Iliad generally

i think my very first introduction to the beauty of latin literature were cicero's private letters tbh. we have novel-worthy correspondence between him and his bestie. he also wrote a lot to his devoted ex-slave who worked for him until he died and gosh the way he cared, saying stuff like "please my dear, take care of yourself. it's very important that you do, you'll make me very happy."

and not to even mention his family!! the way he wrote to his wife is just aoughhh. "honey, my soul, my love, I love you very much and I miss you. I want nothing but to be in your arms right now. oh, and give the kids a kiss for me." and he was such a girl dad too omg, always asking about his beloved daughter whom he called "my light" and "my sweet joy". people don't know enough about this

ik that pentheus' 'what, shall i stop being classified as male and become a woman?' line is generally seen to represent his restrictive ideas surrounding gender + his belief that clothing = gender identity (which shows the complete contrast between dionysus + pentheus r.e concepts of gender imo) + when ive discussed it w ppl the general reaction has been 'haha silly pentheus thinks that putting on a dress will magically give him tits'. but the thing is that, by dressing as a woman, pentheus is in some way renouncing his claim 2 masculinity, altho obviously there is a difference between not being seen as a man + being seen as a woman...i quote the priests of cybele as an example of this. crossdressing is a transgression of gender norms + for a man as determined to appear so masculine as pentheus, it is a huge step back from the gender roles he is used 2 filling. does this mean that he will literally become 1 of the women? well, judging by the reactions of the bacchants, no, but his behaviour will also isolate him from the men of thebes. + on a more metatheatrical level, this is tragedy, this is theatre, where the costume + mask define the character. + so in some fundamental level, by adopting a female costume, a female persona, does pentheus in some way become a female character? we know that agave + pentheus were played by the same actor + so pentheus' character was defined by the mask since the 2 of them would be dressed exactly the same. so rlly, pentheus is right; by dressing as a woman he is able to fulfill the wish he expresses later on - that of becoming more like his mother

not only did i forget about that one iliupersis cup where the pestle-wielding woman is inscribed as andromache with astyanax shielded behind her, and got suckerpunched once again by reading michael anderson's description of it

but then anderson points out how well the composition is balanced with neoptolemus wielding astyanax' corpse in a similar way on the opposite end of the cup

astyanax is alive at one end, dead at the other. we're seeing both andromache's desperate attempt to protect him and the tragic reveal that she couldn't.
