🩸 - Aerodrakons: Love of my life. My beautiful horrible science experiment of a story. A Cold War horror narrative about planes that are reverse engineered into biological organisms and the terrible consequences that follow. My long term publishing goal.
I decided that this is my one and only story. I realised that I don’t have much to say beyond this, so I am going to pour all of my energy into crafting this book and making art for it here on tumblr.

The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 ‘Foxbat’ Aerodrakon has for a long time been a source of great speculation and anxiety for western intelligence. With recorded top speeds of Mach 3.2 and an altitude record of approximately 20,700 metres and an absolute record of 37,650 meters. The Foxbat has also been noted for its exceptionally large wings and dorsal tails, suggesting that is a highly manoeuvrable ‘Soviet-superfighter’ as dubbed by US intelligence.
The Foxbat in its most present iteration began in 1964. The organism was noted as having an extremely stout neck even by Aerodrakon standards, and an extremely prominent set of air intakes, so much so that the supporting undercarriage makes up part of the intake’s anatomy. They also have squat legs partially splayed out to the side, and are noted as having gaits similar to that of varanids or crocodilians.
Another thing that became extremely apparent in their early operational history was the engineering of their nervous systems. Even without a Central Command Nexus established, new Soviet aircrews that arrived to begin work on the MiG-25 noted it was particularly flighty and had a predilection to snap or bolt away when touched. Whether or not the high-strung nature of their bodily hemispheres is a production error or purposeful inclusion has not been verified. As a result, the MiG-25s have been responsible for many injuries and deaths, partially caused by aircrew attempting to accession its alcohol coolant glands in secret when no special restraint procedures have been applied.
The Foxbats have one of the largest mouth-to-body ratios of any fighter-Aerodrakon, capable of opening disproportionately wide and delivering exceptionally powerful bites that kill almost instantly. They are noted as having partially forward-facing, flat teeth similar to some prehistoric sharks like Edestus.
The latest and most advanced offshoot of the Foxbat is the MiG-25P, outfitted with greater pilot-to-Aerodrakon integration systems and a more advanced sensory mapping field. Sensory dampening is apparently still an ongoing issue, with many pilots returning drenched in sweat even on cold days, or even with minor burn wounds.
The MiG-25 has only one pilot-to-Aerodrakon integration module unless it is a trainer variant, as if the standard for most emerging fighter aircraft.
Presently, much of the Foxbat’s design, combat capabilities, and process of genetic sequencing are unknown to NATO and US intelligence, with extreme caution being advised to reconnaissance and patrol aircraft set to fly near the border of the Soviet Union, but the gathering on launch data and scramble-intercept timing is also considered to be of paramount importance in understanding the nature of this new aircraft, which would remain unbeknownst to the US until Viktor Ivanovich Belenko’s defection in September of 1976.

Sequence number 17966 or as she is more colloquially and affectionately known; ‘Black Betty’ is a Lockheed SR-71 Aerodrakon. She has the prestige of being one of only twenty surviving bodies with the designation ‘SR-71’ within the Blackbird family. Among these twenty airframes she has the even greater privilege of being one of the first successful production models to emerge from Skunk Work’s embryonic development facilities without any major mutations or deficiencies, signifying that the investment into the Blackbird’s particular design was well worth the incredible cost.
Black Betty has a storied but otherwise nominal developmental and operational history. Black Betty was developed from a specially devised genomic sequence which encoded for the anatomical and functional extremities seen in her design. Maturation was reached at some point in the early 1960s and her early stationing was exclusively at Beale AFB among 12 other Blackbirds where she was used to train the first sets of handlers cleared to work on the top-secret SR-71 program.
Tracking well in the first years of her life, Black Betty was one of the first two SR-71s to be sent out to Kadena Air Force Base as Detachment One. There, she flew reconnaissance missions to Southeast Asia during Vietnam. Since then she’s been to most detachments and flown to most contested locations grabbing electronic, biological, and geographical data on every member of the Drakon family of organic machines.
In 1971 her crew was changed over, then in 1976 was changed over again to her current duo of airmen pilot Major James ‘EagleEye’ Bernadette-Marshall and RSO Major Oliver ‘Twigs’ Miller. Those knuckleheads will be the first to take Black Betty over the Soviet border to the Primorsky Krai region of Soviet Russia.
As most Aerodrakons are, she is visually indistinct from her kin and items of personification come in the form of tail art and accessories for public viewing or shits and giggles. The SR-71 has a standard two layers of skin, a pigmented outer layer mimicking the tensile strength and shock-absorbing capabilities of metal, in this case titanium, and a thinner mesoepidermis that is essentially a mucosal later to retain moisture. One such difference is that her dermal plates (the epidermis) have microsutures in which blood-fuel coagulant leaks through as a means of thermoregulation at subsonic speeds. The internal musculature is a standard network of ossified cartilage, tendons, viscera, enamelled teeth, connective tissue, and muscle, albeit large sections of her body are comprised of spongiform tissue to enable the coagulant to leak through while retaining some so the receptacles aren’t totally empty. It also means that she is comparatively lightweight relative to size but not by a significant amount. Betty is also a void. The pigmentation of her epidermis is extremely dark.
Like all Aerodrakons Black Betty has a decentralised nervous system organised into two bodily hemispheres. Actions are coordinated by a singular connective node somewhere along the lumbar spine. In the event the crew is centralised with the Blackbird the two bodily hemispheres are organised into one and neurological commands are then routed from the cockpit (otherwise known as the Central Command Nexus.)
In day-to-day Air Force life Black Betty is the subject of many inside jokes and artistic depictions. Photography is not yet allowed. Crews have described her temperament to be docile and easygoing, highly receptive to routine and procedural activities. There have been no recorded instances of Network Rejection or Ganglion Rebellion and she has acclimated to her new aircrew quite nicely.
As an aside, yes I did use a pose from one of Hydrothrax’s drawings. I really liked the concept of Blackbird and Blackbird-adjacent creatures adopting an azhdarchidoform stance and I will be drawing a front and side view of Betty to ensure there’s some greater originality. It might be a while since the Aerodrakons story itself is prose only, and this aircraft is bloody hard to draw from various angles. I do not have much money saved but in the future I would consider commissioning a Black Betty 3D model.
The ideal book is 500 blank pages which act as a safe space that allows the reader full control over the narrative without running the risk of nonconsentually forcing their train of thought or violating their cognitive boundaries
Don’t usually reblog but since I’m a “writer” writing a supposedly “devastatingly depressing book”- Bookslop’s ideal book is 500 pages of inconsistent threadbare plot, uninspired worldbuilding that does not enhance the story in any meaningful way, and misogynistic rape porn disguised as “dark romance” or “romantasy”

I wanted to do a full drawing instead of just a concept sketch but couldn’t quite figure out how to do the blood. But the idea’s out now. Its fine. Its ok. I’m zen. I’m zen.
