In highschool I wrote a story about a middle-generation of stellar travelers. Their parents were born on earth and left as children, and the middle generation will not live long enough to see their destination. They live their entire lives on the ship and I wrote about them trying to find their place in everything. They will never know blue skies and warm beaches and open fields with warm breezes. Theyāll never know birdsong or crickets or frogs. Theyāll never hear the rain on the roof of a dreary day. I never could find the right way to end the story. I wanted it to be a happy ending, but I didnāt know how to do it.
I realize now that it was a book about me dealing with depression before I even knew it. Looking back at how blatant the projecting was, itās obvious now. It wasnāt then.
In the story, the middle-generation people are lost. Theyāre apathetic. Theyāre just a placeholder. The only job they have is to keep the ship running, have kids, and die. As the middle generation of people began becoming adults, suicide rates were skyrocketing. Crime and drug rates were jumping. This generation was completely apathetic because they felt that they had no use.
In the story, a small group of people in the middle-generation create the Weather Project. They turn the ship into a terrarium. They make magnificent gardens and take the DNA of animals they took with them and recreate them and they make this cold, metal spaceship that they have to live their entire lives on into a home. They take what little they have and they break it and rearrange it into something beautiful. They take this radical idea and turn the ship into a wonderful jungle of trees and birds and sunshine.
And I realize now how much it reflects my state of mind as I transitioned from a child into an adult while dealing with depression. You always hear āit gets betterā and āwhen youāre older things will be easierā and I was so sick of waiting for it to get better. I was in the middle-generation stage. And I was sick of it. I was so sick of waiting.
When I was in highschool I didnāt know how to end the story. I didnāt know how to have a happy ending. I didnāt have the life experience then to finish the story in a meaningful way. I didnāt know how to make it better for these middle-generation characters.
But now that Iām older, Iām learning. That if you sit and wait for things to get better, it never will. You have to take your life and break it apart and rearrange it into something beautiful. You have to make the cold metal ship into the garden that you deserve. You have to make your own meaning. You have to plant your own garden.
You have to teach yourself that being happy is not a radical idea.
God you guys I never thought this would become so popular š± I was gonna name it The Weather Project after the art installment that inspired it

This is the most important post that Iāve ever made. Its for screaming out with every fiber of your being that youāre worth something. Youāre worth everything.

One of my favorite tropes is post apocalyptic towns being named after dilapidated signs with missing letters, like Novac (no vacancy) and Eaden (dead end). Thereās something inexplicable about it

Mountain Stream in the Moonlight (1905) - Albert Rieger
most who met them thought they shared a mother. but in truth, they only went to the same school, far away from either of their homes and rich enough to turn them from rebels into citizens when they came of age.
one preferred green. one preferred gray. they each had a talent for the arts of life and death. together they learned, until the day they were offered a choice: to specialize, become greater. become someone worth being.
the one clad in green chose the path of life. she began by learning to treat cuts and scrapes, then gashes and broken bones, then organ damage and fatal wounds.
the one clad in gray chose the path of death. she began by learning the shape of bones, the stages of decay, the strength of failing flesh.
healer and resurrectionist. the healerās skill was great, and her power greater, and this endeared her to the people she served. she grew to whisper wounds shut in a single word, to cure a childās illness with a brush of her hand.
the resurrectionist was not as beloved, for she lacked a crucial power that people around her sought: to bring the dead back. that a spirit once departed could never return was common knowledge, but often logic left those in mourning. time and time again she had to say: i cannot bring them back. i cannot ease your pain.

āthey love you,ā said the resurrectionist. beyond the temple walls a crowd stood vigil - not in rememberence but in thanks. the healer had saved the life of the high priest earlier, when his heart had stopped in the middle of the solstice ceremony. āyouāre a hero,ā she said.
āit was nothing,ā the healer replied. āit was easy.ā
āit wonāt always be,ā said the resurrectionist. āsomeday youāll meet someone you canāt save.ā
the healer raised her chin. her eyes were hard in the darkness. āwe will see about that.ā

Iāve posted this to a sideblog that Iām hoping no one ever finds, but Iām gonna do it here too! My best bud Dylan wrote me a tender little snippet for my birthday, and because Iām missing theater something fierce, I decided to do a little⦠recording. The volume is probably quite low, and i ramble, but I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed getting to read this <3 If i decide itās fun enough and that I donāt completely suck, Iāll do podfics (with the understanding that itās with the authorās permission to record and/or post!) and look into better hosting situations than an audiofile on tumb. Feel free to give feedback and/or tell me to never talk again!!Ā
i posted this on twitter and wanted to see more cute pets!!! please tell me about your pets and what itās moveset would be if they were pokemon :ā) !!!
