Also to keep the timeline from changing further, Steve would have to just… ignore the return of Hydra.  “Peggy hired Arnim Zola as part of Operation Paperclip.  That sounds like a problem for past me.  By which I mean iceberg me’s future.” -Steve, probably.

Shall we also talk about how Endgame!Steve erased Peggy and (her real husband) Daniel Sousa’s kids from that timeline too? He did the exact thing Tony wasn’t willing to do when he first came to him with Scott’s Time Heist idea: potentially risk erasing children from existence by going back in time. And Steve didn’t even potentially risk it when he went back in time at the end of the movie, he actually purposely did it. You can’t tell me he didn’t know, or at the very least consider, the consequences of what – and who – he would be erasing by going back in time to be with Peggy. He knew she got married. He knew she had kids. He knew she moved on from him with her life and wanted him to do the same from her. He knew she was happy with how her life turned out. She TOLD him this in TWS. And yet he didn’t care. He took all of that away from her anyway. I don’t even like Peggy, but what Steve did to her character and story is misogynistic as fuck. 

And what about what Steve did to both versions of Bucky? Dooming alternate!Bucky to the exact same fate that his future self suffered by sitting around doing nothing to save him from being taken, tortured, brainwashed and weaponised by HYDRA. Abandoning present!Bucky, the man he caused collateral damage and even civilian casualties for in several European countries back in CW, and leaving him to now fend for himself in the present timeline with limited friends, support networks, or knowledge about the modern world. Remember, Bucky would still be a wanted fugitive for the crimes he committed (willingly or no) as the Winter Soldier, and Steve has essentially thrown him back to the same wolves he’d tried protecting him from in CW. So much for “til the end of the line”, right? “Even when I had nothing I had Bucky.” – well now Bucky has nothing because Steve wanted everything. 

There’s really no way to twist or justify Steve’s ending and make it unselfish, whether he went back to an alternate timeline or the same timeline or whatever else the four horsemen of Endgame have been trying to spin. Ya’ll hardcore Cap Stans can all scream about how he “deserved a happy ending” all you want, but that wasn’t it. Steve took away somebody else’s happy ending in order to get his. That’s not noble. That’s not selfless. That’s not heroic. That’s bullshit. It’s selfish, entitled and disgusting. And if you still think that that’s something he “deserved” to do, then I really don’t know what to say.

Not only that, but if you believe the writers Markus and McFeely in that Steve was part of the main timeline and not an alternate one all along, then that means Steve was around the whole time and he just lets all the bad things happen to everyone because he can’t risk his happy ending. I’ve been shouting all of this from the rooftops for months now, but on other social media platforms this kind of discourse is met with heaps of misogyny by toxic fanboys that don’t want to believe for a second that their perfect movie isn’t so perfect after all.

Endgame did literally everyone dirty. EVERYONE. We all deserved so much better than this garbage movie that shits on eleven years of character development. It would be nice if comic book films were allowed to be written by the people that truly love the characters and give a damn about characterization - that know them inside out.

Can I just note how when Tony falls, Steve offers him the arc reactor?

Subconsciously or not, he thinks that the arc reactor is still what's keeping Tony functioning. Tony giving it to him must have been what made him collapse; if Steve gives it back, Tony will be alright again.

As we all know by now, the arc reactor is representative of Tony's heart. That scene was him demonstrating to Steve that Steve's actions had figuratively and literally ripped his heart out. Old news.

The interesting part is that Steve tries to give it back. He sees how Tony is affected, and tries to offer back to him what was taken--but Tony collapses anyway, without accepting it.

Now here's my hot take: Steve is and has always been under the impression that things can just "become right again", that nothing he does has lasting negative consequences, but Tony collapsing is a very prominent demonstration of the repercussions of Steve's actions. The fact that Tony does not accept the proffered arc reactor is basically his way of saying, "You think that will fix this? Too late."

Just like in Steve's "apology" in Civil War, Steve functions under the assumption that no matter how much pain he causes, forgiveness and "the way things used to be" are always right around the corner. He's always been a man stuck in the past--he doesn't realize that getting things back to how they were is not that simple.

This is potentially the first time that Steve truly realizes how deeply he hurt Tony, and the actions in this scene speak even louder than Tony's agonizing words.

Because when Tony actually passes out, Steve doesn't know what to do.

His attempt at fixing things didn't work this time, and now he's lost, shocked at how deeply the ramifications of his impulsive and selfish actions run.

"I needed you. Past tense." And despite the fact that Steve lives in the past, there's now nothing he can do.

I'm not saying I totally disagree with all this, but I do think it's more of a Chris Evans "I have one hand free to reach for him so the other arc wielding hand is clearly in the shot" rather than Steve Rogers actually offering it back to him. If you look, Steve is reaching for him. It's not like he's going to put the arc reactor in his pocket or anything.
