We went to Vegas again! And Mephy and I got our own cart on the ferris wheel! She carried me bridal-style in her arms on the way to a hotel, but a cop NPC thought that she was kidnapping me, and we had to make a getaway!

The wrongdoing she did (/silly) was damaging a bunch of cars when she joined in on Nagiko's parkour getaway method.

She also disoriented the cops with a bomb, but I mean, come on. It was cops, and not even real cops at that, so everything is fine, don't worry about it. :)

You know i’ve always been kind of bugged at how Caeneus has been blackwashed by Fate? Like all of the tyrant king stuff and how he’s ultraviolent when in reality, he probably wasn’t any more violent than most greek heroes, and was so intensely loyal that his Lancer forms madness enhancement of ‘he’ll fucking kill you if he feels like it’ seems like such a weird stretch for the character- especially since his incredible loyalty was one of the reasons that the Centaurs had to drop an entire forest on him.

Like, his ‘tyrant king’ concept seems to be pulling from the idea that he’s the son of Elatus, a cheiftan of the Lapith tribe, but Caeneus was never noted to be tyrannical in any way. Based on the myths around Coronus (Caeneus’ son) and Leonteus (Caeneus’ grandson during the Trojan War), being related to Caeneus was a thing of honor because he was a famed hero, and while the Lapithae were a warrior tribe (Homer describes them as ‘the race of Mars’), they were an incredibly well-respected tribe in Greek mythology.

Which makes Fate’s take on Caeneus being a ‘tyrant’ entirely fictional, and it also doesn’t… make a ton of sense because his people weren’t these uncivilized brutes (they were actually presented as the reasonable ones during the Centauromachy), and several writers of Greek myths made heroes from the Lapith tribe blessed by the gods, or marry into other lineages in order to beef up just how awesome a hero or lineage was, or how powerful an army was for having someone of such repute on their side.

It’d be one thing if it was a personal interpretation based on Caeneus’ own sort of self-loathing, and part of it seems that way, but it also just seems to be partially presented as a fact in-universe? And I guess it was a way to make Wodime seem more like a ‘bad guy’ in the earlier chapters, if he teamed up with a ‘Grecian divine tyrant’ rather than a ‘Well-respected Grecian hero’.

Anyways there were a lot of cool Lapith heroes, and I kind of want to see some more mention of them, since they were connected to famous heroes like Theseus and Heracles.

And also, I feel like this is related to/the same reason for Wheel Monk being portrayed as this unforgivable sinner seeking redemption. In the actual Mahabarata afaik he was much like you describe Caeneus, incredibly violent but incredibly loyal and while morally gray in their actions very human and heroic in their intentions. But while Wheel Monk is only somewhat exaggerated since LB4’s…whole deal, and how amicable Pepe is, since Wojack is basically built up as big bad (even if we all knew he wouldn’t be the moment he was revealed as no.5) they vilified Caeneus to a proportionately higher degree.

Ashvatthama has the sin of committing essentially a war crime in the myth that he’s from though, so his darkness and path to repentance makes sense. Caeneus, on the other hand, has… a pretty clean record? As far as major myths go, you’d find darker takes on Achilles or Heracles. Caeneus isn’t really morally grey. He’s pretty heroic and well-respected, in all the information you’ll find about him. Which is admittedly kind of small, so I do realize that FGO had to improvise a few things.

It’s kind of hard to find specific takes on the Lapith people in myths outside of a general sense, kind of like how there aren’t many specific mythical centaurs that get much popular recognition outside of Chiron. That, alongside the fact that Ancient Thessaly was just… bursting with heroes (Jason and Achilles are both Thessalian) and other mythological creatures that the Lapithae were basically just another introduction of a demigod-like race of super people to add to the mythos. So Greek writers would occasionally drop in ‘_____ was a Lapith’ in order to emphasize that said character was basically absurdly strong, as in with Coronus and Leonteus who didn’t have much character outside of being Caeneus’ blood, since just that was enough to go ‘okay, this is a pretty tough hero then’.

The three major Lapithae that you’ll be able to get good mythological representations of are Caeneus (Mostly through Ovid’s Metamorphosis and some interpretations of the Argonautica), Pirithous (through the Iliad and Odyssey), and Polyphemus (Basically Heracles’ close friend in the original Argonautica, though you’ll probably find more about the Cyclops).

But based on Nestor’s account of Caeneus in Ovid’s works, he’s… basically one of the most idyllic Greek heroes because all Nestor does is praise him- which considering how big of a deal Nestor was during the Trojan War, is pretty high praise. Apollonius’ original Argonautica basically says ‘Caeneus was dead by this time, so here’s his son Coronus who’s pretty cool, but not as cool as his father Caeneus’. In most classical texts, Caeneus was essentially a stand-out hero that would cameo in important stories to help bolster them, so the ‘tyrant’ angle is either from an incredibly obscure source, or just something Type-MOON made up. He was a free-spirited, incredibly mighty and loyal warrior that was rumored to have been born a woman and gifted a male body by Poseidon.

Rider Caenis is actually a bit closer to how Caeneus was in myth, but considering he’s basically the same as his Lancer self without the overt cruelty and Madness Enhancement, it’s pretty clear to see which traits made him a bit more ‘problematic’ in FGO-lore.
