I have a post about it, but I cant find it so I'm just gonna paraphrase it here. The amount of social media pages/influencers who post blatant misandry and (successfully) pass it off as empowerment or supporting victims or whatever is just staggering.

I made the mistake of commenting on one via facebook, and the algorithm started recommending me literally dozens of pages like this:

Videos about how men are bad and women are inherently better. Videos about how everything is men's fault (i'm not even paraphrasing here. Some literally say "everything"). Videos about how men cant possibly understand basic human emotions. About how hating men is justified and anyone who disagrees is a misogynist.

And what's worse is how popular they are. So many comments of women agreeing. That violence against men is fine. That sexism against men is fine. That even when a man wasnt present during [bad thing], it's still men's fault.

Scary how sexism can so easily be spun as positive by the very people who claim to oppose it.

Like recently, I found a post about how men dont understand what it's like to be abused or have trouble seeking help. I posted (with proof) that male victims of abuse face trouble being believed by police, onloookers, and even abuse programs that are meant to help victims. That most abuse programs straight up reject male victims for being male.

The responses (along with laugh emojis) were about how men cant be abused, how they deserve abuse, or how encouragement for women to beat men more. All with at least a dozen likes.

It's like that scooby doo meme where behind the mask of protecting victims, it's actually just unapologetic misandry. Except it's not even well hidden.

Really just sounds like Canada wants to avoid caring for disabled and suffering people in their country.

"Age verification" systems are ultimately not going to protect children. Neither are they going to allow any form of intrusive mass-surveillance which hasn't already become widespread in this surveillance capitalist age.

As for claims of "private" age verification systems, anyone who knows a thing about computers understands that any system fundamentally relies upon trust in the person running it. There is no reason to assume age verification data will be any harder for governments to demand than your internet logs and personal movement history, which they can already easily access.

What age verification will achieve is the ability of governments everywhere to prosecute people for being anonymous online. It functionally serves as a ban on anonymity.

Do you run a website and refuse to take in your users' IDs? That's breaking the law. Do you believe in privacy and bypass ID gates on websites? That's breaking the law. Are you an activist, journalist, opposition politician or Belarusian Wikipedia editor who has a good excuse to want anonymity? You're breaking the law.

We need to be very careful not to normalise these systems; not to de-normalise bypassing and protesting them. A passport internet will not usher in mass surveillance, it will simply ban the concept of privacy. The latter is just as dangerous as the former.

Never give your ID to anything on the internet, ever.

I have extremely bad news for you about our lawmakers.

This is NOT a slippery slope argument, it is an argument with very clear precedents and lots of evidence of harm done. There isn't dangerous stuff going on in tech right now, there has been dangerous stuff going on in tech since "tech" has existed.

SESTA/FOSTA, passed by lawmakers to prevent human trafficking, is why it's so easy to get trans women on tumblr banned for posting 'mature content'. It has also made human trafficking worse, made sex work more dangerous, and sanitized the internet to the point that it's difficult to post photos of classical sculptures or instructions on how to perform a breast self-exam on most platforms.

The DMCA, passed by lawmakers to protect copyright holders online, is frequently used to censor criticism, cover up reporting on corporate malfeasance, and prevent buyers from having true ownership of digital purchases.

Lawmakers are CONSTANTLY attempting to use "But this would protect children/prevent the sharing of CSAM" to attack Section 230, a legal provision that prevents platforms from being held liable for the content they host. The proposed changes lawmakers idiotically present actually would drastically erode your ability to post ANY images online, would not make anyone safer, and would further consolidate the power held by platforms like Google and Meta while making it harder for smaller online platforms to exist.

The original sin of all of this (in the US at least) is the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, which was passed in 1986 to regulate charges and sentences for computer-based crime and has been used since to prosecute security researchers and activists, and has been responsible for tremendously disproportionate sentences levied against people charged with computer-related crimes.

The people who write and pass laws about computers and the internet don't understand computers or the internet. The people who advocate for these kinds of laws either don't anticipate the second-order consequences or anticipated the consequences and wanted fallout like the sanitation of the internet or the criminalization of downloading journal articles.

I am not fearmongering, I am someone who has been aware of the disastrous outcomes of legislating the internet for decades pointing to the specific ways that the sorts of rules people are proposing have demonstrably been fucking people over forever.

They're planning on making all DnD content switch over to digital only eventually, meaning any source material can only be accessed through DnD beyond, and the ones being charged won't just be the DMs, it'll be players too as they'll lock everything behind a pay wall that you need to pay into to play.

They'll most likely disable any ability to share the content with others, meaning each person wanting to play will need to buy access to the content.

BTW the new DnD CEO was a former Microsoft employee who was instrumental in implementing ever more microtransactions in video games.

They’ve switch the President of the D&D portion of WotC a couple times over the last few years. Mearls was an idiot, but then they replaced him with Ray Winninger, a guy who at least had some background in RPGs and Tabletop hobbies, but was clearly hired because of his background in trying to force tablet and app integration into games (which failed). Things under Winninger apparently didn’t impress the higher-ups. New guy, Dan Rawson, is a nepotistic pick from the current WotC President, Cynthia Williams, who also worked at Microsoft with Rawson. Williams is the one above being quoted about not monetizing their brands enough, Rawson’s entire career has been monetizing and e-commerce.

WotC has been a fucking terrible company for years. There’s been more than enough reasons to dump them entirely over the past decade, but over the past few years they’ve made a dedicated effort to prove that it can absolutely get worse. They’re currently trying to sell piece-meal content from their books on the DNDBeyond website.

Individual feats, stat blocks, items, and anything else they can break up. It’s cheaper to just buy the whole thing instead, but this shit shouldn’t even be an option. They’re doing this because they’re trying to see what they can get away with. They will try worse. They will do worse. They will try to stamp out competition. 

People will make excuses that they can just keep playing 5e and keep using homebrew, but they need to stop making excuses for why it’s okay to support WotC indirectly and WotC will continue to see what they can get away with because not enough people will have abandoned them to make an impact on their profits.
