Last of Us one-shot idea:

So, this is all based around immunologically privileged sites. Which are the locations in the body where the immune system is less likely to attack its own tissue, for example: the eyes. If your immune system were to recognize your eyes, they would be identified as a "foreign body" and would attack them.

So, Ellie's cordyceps: because of antibodies from her mother being bitten, the cordyceps believe they have already infected their host. She obviously isn't sick all the time because of them, so her immune system seems to ignore them. But, what if when the fireflies were doing their little tests and whatnot, it caused her immune system to react and "notice" the infection, causing it to attack. Creating a chain reaction of the cordyceps trying to survive and spreading further through Ellie.

Just an idea.
