@nurseconscience asked: ❛ don’t overthink it. ❜
the scalpel in whitaker's hand hovers over the patient -- the slight hesitation clearly evident to the nurse across from him. blue eyes look up to catch doctor robby giving him a small nod to continue before he glances at nurse nic. she'd see the brief smile of thanks from her encouragement on his face if it weren't for the mask covering his face. so instead, he nods and refocuses, placing the scalpel against flesh and cutting along the body.

@nurseconscience asked: ❛ you’re kidding me. ❜
" i thought-- it was ALL the machine had left in my size. " whitaker looks down at his scrubs, already knowing what he's going to see. he knew the blue was going to be noticeable but what other choice did he have? they were all out of his size in the black scrubs the doctors were required to wear in the emergency department. " i figured it was better for me to be back on the floor than waiting for clean ones to show up. " he adds sheepishly, not wanting to step on anyone's toes on his first day.
“what's wrong with huckleberry?" trinity questioned, a shit eating grin forming on her face that she was totally aware of. it was almost too easy to wind him up. brows raising, “i think it has a nice ring to it. meant it as a complement.” only she didn't. not really. their banter simply made the twelve hour shifts more bearable. elbows leaning on the desk, “dude, there's no way you'll survive here without a sense of humor. make up a nickname for me. even out the playing field."
" i don't like it and i've asked you to stop calling me that. " he responds, sounding more confident than he actually feels. " a compliment? -- sure. " it's hard not to roll his eyes. santos is ( still ) intimidating but not completely unreadable. he grew up with several older brothers and recognizes when someone is teasing him. " besides. . .i'm here to help people, not make fun of them. "
⊹ · ⸻ paging john frost : closed starter for @hcklebrry [ dennis whitaker ]
❛ i have been where you are. ❜ john puts his hand on dennis's shoulder. well maybe not to the point where he had to change into scrubs multiple times in the same shift, but the resident wanted to show support for the younger man. he knew what it felt like to lack confidence, and working in the ED was no easy feat. ❛ if you need anything, I am here for you okay? ❜
dennis is losing count of how many times he's changed his scrubs ( is this is fourth time in four hours? ) and this time? he's not so fortunate. the scrubs are the right size ( FINALLY ) but the wrong color. and even worse, they're morgue scrubs.
whitaker is looking over his last set of notes before fully stepping back out onto the floor to the never-ending list of patients waiting to be seen when he startles at a hand on his shoulder, his own shooting upwards as if doctor frost is a mother cat coming to wrangle him back to where he needs to be by the scruff of his neck. " you've been stuck in morgue scrubs, too? " he asks -- before realizing that the senior doctor probably hasn't even noticed.
so i started watching The Pitt… i only one episode in and i already have a favorite… he hold cup so gently

@elpasobrn ( gemma ) asked: ❛ maybe you’re right. ❜
whitaker is still getting used to talking to patients on his own and doesn't always realize that the medical terminology that flies off his tongue might sound harsh or confusing to others. " i am. . . " he says with a nod and, as if only now realizing how condescending he must sound, rushes to add more to his explanation. " --but it's not a bad thing. better to have someone look at it and it be nothing than have it be something and you don't get it looked at. " and offers a comforting smile. " luckily, everything looks good. i would ice it this evening to help the swelling and maybe try to stay off of it as much as possible for a day or two. . .i would also recommend taking ibuprofen for any lingering pain. other than that, you should be good. "
the way dr robby grabs whitaker by the collar whenever he wants to talk to him like he’s wrangling a puppy scurrying around the house gets me every time.

@drsant0s asked: ❛ that’s fucked up. ❜
" not really. . .it-it happens on farms all the time. " whitaker says with a quick glance towards javadi, silently hoping she'll have his back but she's already looking to be anywhere else but there. shoulders slump as he turns his attention back to santos and gives a small shrug. he's never thought about it being weird or ' fucked up ' as she claims; it's just daily life of a farmer. " i know it's not a common procedure on humans but there have been some successful cases. " he adds. he had hoped to share an interesting fact, something someone else in his field would find interesting but it seems it's backfiring spectacularly, instead.
