When I was little, I thought that the finalists would have to compete in Serena's final Master Class showcase. At the time, I didn't know Hoenn or Sinnoh even existed; after all, I only watched it on TV, and being very young, I didn't fully grasp the scale of what Pokémon was and still is.

Getting back to the topic, I thought there were going to be Pokémon battles, that the finalist would actually have to battle the Queen; Aria, in addition to giving a performance. That could have been a moment for Serena’s growth: grappling with how to face such a situation, yet drawing on her journey and the various fighting styles she had witnessed to adapt them for that kind of battle.

You can imagine a little girl feeling somewhat let down that there wasn't a battle, especially since I remembered the match between the disguised Aria and Serena ( in the EP868). But the real crushing disappointment came during Aria's performance; it was… crap. there’s no other word for it, especially with that lame excuse they came up with about the "smile" They should just be realistic and admit people voted for her because they already knew who she was.

On top of that, when I saw Hoenn and Sinnoh much later, let's just say I hated the creative decisions they made even more.

Damn, we missed out on so many interesting moves and funny moments. Just imagine if Ash and Clemont had participated (Ash out of curiosity and because he enjoys it, and Clemont perhaps because Bonnie insisted he join in and give it a try) We were blatantly robbed.

What about you? What do you think about the Showcases? Did you like what they did in Kalos, or not?

Ash but his stage fright never really 100% goes away

I love the Pokémon anime, that’s pretty obvious, but there is one detail.

I never watched the Johto arc. And believe me, I try; I swear I try. I wanted to see Totodile and the character development of Gary and Charizard, but…

I dropped it after two episodes and moved straight on to Hoenn; at most, I watched the Celebi movie and… that was it. I swear I tried to watch it (though I don't know where to watch Pokémon in Spanish now that AnimeFlv isn't working), but I couldn't; maybe because it was the same dynamic and the same characters, and I already knew how it was going to end, plus, I was really tired that day.

And you know the worst part? Even though I can't stand a single episode of Johto, I can watch the Unova ones without any problem… and that’s a really bad season! Even so, they were more bearable and interesting.

I don't know. Do you guys experience something similar with any Pokémon season or arc?

I understand why people are fascinated by hypothetical scenarios where Ash has a different starter Pokémon and is smarter.

Even so, I don’t want to read it; I simply don’t like those kinds of stories. Sure, I’m fine with you exploring scenarios where he gets an Eevee or a Riolu instead, but that’s not for me; I want the Pikachu that defeats Legendary Pokémon despite its terrible attitude, and I want a clumsy Ash who doesn’t know the ins and outs of Pokémon type matchups because ¡surprise! he’s a ten year old kid exploring the world.

So, if someone recommends a "great" fanfic based on those kinds of premises, I’m not going to read it. It doesn’t matter if it’s the eighth wonder of the world, if it includes clichés I usually enjoy, or if it portrays the characters well (for the most part); the moment I see a "Smart Ash" tag or a description like "What if Ash had woken up early?" or "What if his starter Pokémon had been a Riolu?", I automatically rule it out.

Of course, these are matters of personal taste; if you like them, that is completely respectable.

Also Pikachu evolving is something I will immediately rule out a story for. He wouldn't do that and I don't like it.

Though, I have had a thought regarding these before, and all of these examples actually share a common problem that kills my interest.

Smart Ash: Effectively replaces Ash with an OC

Pikachu Evolving: Effectively replaces Pikachu with an OC

Ash, Pikachu, or both are either effectively or literally replaced with OCs. They aren't actually making a real attempt at contending with these characters or their dynamic.

But, if I enjoy these characters and dynamic as they are, and am looking for more... If it's the thing that leads to me seeking out fics in the first place, of course I'm not going to enjoy stories that go against that. Their quality doesn't matter, I'm never going to like them no matter how well executed they are.

That’s true! I had forgotten about the fanfics where Pikachu evolves. After all, there are magnificent stories where Pikachu demonstrates—by his own choice—that he doesn't want to evolve, and where it’s shown that he is powerful just as he is (and that a Pokémon can be dangerous regardless of its evolutionary stage).

And yet, you bring up those story arcs and moments using rather… absurd pretexts—some of which are even disappointing.

Personally, they prefer fanfics where Pikachu is the protagonist, where we see his thoughts and his concern for his goofy human and their friends, or stories that explore how the characters' traumas manifest or affect their daily lives, rather than turning the character into the typical isekai protagonist who read the novel before dying.

I picture the relationship between Ash and Sanpei as a secret, long-distance one.

It’s secret because, well, Sanpei is a ninja from a hidden ninja village; the only ones who would know about it are the people in his village and Ash’s closest friends.

And it’s long-distance because Ash is always traveling to different places and regions, whereas Sanpei, even though he does more or less the same thing, stays within Kalos.

A quick Google search reveals that this pairing is called GreninjaShipping, quite fitting (though the only content for it is a fanfic that features other… concerning pairings).

Always remember to have a hobby unrelated to technology, whether you pursue it with others or on your own.

I could get obsessed with an extremely popular pairing and all kinds of fanfic and fan art.

Or a mid-tier couple with a solid fan base, even if they aren't hugely popular or among the top choices.

But NO I end up obsessed with a pairing that has only two fans: me and one friend, and she’s already fed up with my nonsense.

It involves a key character for Greninja, yet no one remembers it.

In fact, does this ship even have a name?

Even though my posts might make it seem like I hate Pokémon XYZ, that’s actually not the case; quite the opposite—it’s one of my favorite series. It’s how I discovered the Pokémon anime, and I loved the show so much that I was one of those silly people who criticized Pokémon Sun & Moon for its different animation style—even though, ironically, it’s now my favorite season (second only to Diamond & Pearl).

However, I think it was the fandom that actually made me grow to dislike this season. Looking back at the anime now, I can see both its strengths and its flaws more clearly.

There were videos criticizing Alain simply for beating Ash (which—if you look at my profile—I find stupid; the criticism regarding Alain should focus on other things), Serena being reduced to nothing more than an object of desire (especially in those YouTube fanfics I used to watch unironically when I was younger), or the lack of sufficient attention given to interesting characters like Sawyer, Sanpei and the Ninja Village, or even Aria herself.

But whenever I look for Pokémon XYZ content, all I find are things that have already been explored and discussed to death—nothing new is really being looked into (mind you, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I’d love to read other points of view).

Where are the theories about the Ninja Village?

Or comparisons between the Hoenn and Sinnoh contests and the ones in Kalos?

What about those strange yet brilliant dynamics—like, say, Clemont and Sanpei, or Miette and Aria?

And then there’s the fandom, attacking anyone who points out things they didn't like about the anime

though, luckily, that hasn't happened to me.

Instead, I read eighty Reddit posts debating whether or not Ash's defeat in Kalos was fair.

Please, let's talk about other aspects of the Kalos League; the other battles we were shown were just as good or interesting.

Anyway, I love Pokémon XYZ, but I wanted to contribute something new—or offer a different perspective—on this anime, which was very important to my childhood.

Probably not. That universe tries to respect some elements of the canon (obviously not all, because it would lose its charm), and in the series, Ash and his friends have been seen going weeks without contacting their parents. Also, remember the original series, specifically episode 68: "It's Mr. Mime Time" where Delia, well, seemed indifferent to her own son's kidnapping. I think the only way would be if Pikachu had stayed in his dimension, but since that's not the case, no, they wouldn't have noticed Ash's disappearance.

Thanks to this, I realized I wasn't too concerned about the story's chronology, mainly because I'm just sketching out the idea, not the story itself (for that, I'd write a fanfic on Ao3 or Wattpad).

There are only occasional references; like Ash being a World Champion or hints that the Bat-family exists within the timeline of a typical fanfic.

So I couldn't say exactly how long Ash spent in the DC universe you're referring to, but I can say how long he'll be in this universe: possibly two or three months before returning to his own world.

As everyone knows, in the Pokémon canon, everyone gets along and only clashes with those who harm Pokémon or are arrogant in a negative way

But the idea that Ash doesn't like Batman keeps nagging at me. He doesn't hate him, but their conversations can get tense. Perhaps it's because Batman, in his current portrayal by the fandom and the comics, is a control freak due to the trauma and death of his children, and he wants to prevent massive disasters. Furthermore, the city he protects doesn't help with this paranoia. This contrasts sharply with Ash, who actively chooses to trust the unknown without trying to control it or curse it to make it "safer.

Now I remember why I created this alternate universe. A curious contrast, isn't it?

The arguments about what to do with Pikachu are probably the most frequent, since Batman probably knows everything about Pikachu, down to the last detail, while Ash simply tells Batman that his best friend isn't an object he can control.

It's a bit better with the other members

Damian is good with the whole animal care thing, and Ash would definitely be fascinated by Titus, Goliath, Batacca, and Alfred the cat, while Robin definitely adores Ash's Pokémon, and I don't know why, but I imagine he gets along well with Dragonite. But it's not very pleasant to have a 13- or 14-year-old pointing a katana at you and repeating his father's speeches

And yes, Ash has his World Championship team; I didn't want to complicate things

Jason is complicated because my mind wants to make them unlikely best friends, but at the same time, Ash wouldn't like Jason's cruelty. But since it's my alternate universe, they are unlikely best friends. And to make it even funnier, Jason can understand Pokémon thanks to the Lazarus Pit, because I say so, and that's that

Then there's Cass. I don't know, I think they get along pretty well, but Cass's habit of appearing out of nowhere and from behind would definitely scare the Pokémon trainer. Besides, I think the first few days would be awkward, since Cass doesn't talk much and Ash is very sociable, but I think they'd get along fine in the end

Alfred would definitely get along with him; I think we all agree. Everyone adores that great butler

And I think I'll stop rambling about how they get along, since this is getting too long, but I'm definitely going to add more members
