I want to become a social worker and with that, I’m creating activities that the child can do and the social worker can do. What I’m wanting is for the child to read each book, then complete a “Character Wheel” for the main character. The three books that I choose are:

The Purple Balloon

My Brother Charlie

My Friend Suhana

Once each book is read, I want the child to complete a “Myself Wheel” to see if they can connect themselves to any of the characters or any of the aspects of the book. All at the same time, I’m going to create a sheet from the social worker to be filling out by asking questions. Outside of the activities, I’m going to write a paper explaining more in-depth about the activities and how they all work together for the child and social worker. For my paper, I’m going to find sources that support my ideas.

For most of the book, the pages are mostly graphics, but for this first page, it’s a full page graphic. I particularly liked the changed in the novel because I sensed a change of importance. Then when I continue reading and the size of the image made sense because they were being chase. And afterwards Hopper had a breakthrough with his jersey.

First reading Secret Coder, I was not excited or expecting to enjoy the novel because of the graphic layout of the novel. But after reading the novel for a couple of pages, I got used to the layout and I found some perks to the novel. With the graphics and the layout of the text bubbles, it was easier and faster to read. I found myself going through the novel faster than what I expected.

Another thought that I had is that with the context of the novel, I think the graphic novel idea works. I think if the author changed the concept of the novel to a “normal” novel then it would change the whole thing. To me, if I was reading Secret Coders as a “normal” novel it would be not as exciting as it is now with all the colors.

Out of all the exercises, I really enjoyed number 20. Although this is one of the more popular ones, I think this is the intention of Linda Liukas. Everyone can personalize each exercise to their liking.

By novel’s end, careful readers will have gathered that although Steve repeatedly distances himself from his crime and does win an acquittal, he is guilty as charged.

“What did she see?” by Tim Engles, Fern Kory

I read back over this and found this quote that matched a conversation that we had in class. As the reader, we know that Steve was in the drugstore because he wrote in one of his journal entries about looking at mints, but during his testimony he denies everything. I think it was important to realize that even though he got an acquittal for the murder charge, he was still guilty of being at the drugstore whether or not he gave a signal.

Monster by Walter Dean Myers pg. 229

Having the flashback of the “little game” of the cup with O’Brien and Steve became crucial to his testimony and the rest of his trial. The practicing of the answer made it apparent that Steve could not stray away from the answers at any point. His answers were so important because of O’Brien wanting to distance Steve from King and Bobo. The quote shows that Steve was revisiting the “little game” to remember how to answers even with the nerves he had.

Steve’s includes this quotes in his journal from his visit from his parents which caught my eye. In the sense that his mother is mourning him as if he were dead can mean a lot of different things. For one, an interpretation can be that she is thinking that he won’t be leaving jail and basically his life is dead. Or the second is a literal interpretation which is that he has the possibility of getting the death sentence for the crime.

For the first time that Steve’s mother comes to visit, you see that Steve has somewhat conformed to life in jail. He is gotten used to the lingo that they use and when he uses it with his mother, the reader along with his mother sees the change in his character. His explanation shows that although he’s private and keeps to himself while he’s there he’s picked up some of the slang.

I chose Not Alone by Kygo to go on the Monster soundtrack. I particularly liked these lyrics because I felt like they related to Steve in the fact that he doesn’t want to sleep or dream because of the nightmares. I also liked the rest of the song because it could relate to when he’s in his cell almost “dreaming” of his life before and after prison.

Reading where Petrocelli calls Steve a “monster” and he begins to write monster all over his pad, it almost seems like you see them appear on the page. Since Myer added the word to the page and had them crossed out like O’Brien did, you almost sense the pain that Steve is in. The addition of the images of “monster” crossed out gives the reader a sense of what is happening in the courtroom with reading the text.

If I were to recast the characters in A Wrinkle in Time, I would choose Mandy Moore to play as the happy medium because I feel that she gives off a welcoming and bright presence just as the character displays. In the majority of her roles in movies, Mandy usually plays a heartwarming character that lends her hand to others in need. On page 150, Mrs. Whatsit explains the character’s attitude as, “She’s very jolly. If I ever saw her looking unhappy, I would be very depressed myself. As long as she can laugh I’m sure everything is going to come out right in the end.” Here, I can envision Mandy’s positive demeanor while Mrs. Whatsit described the happy medium.

I completely agree with your decision for Mandy Moore for the recast as the Happy Medium. For the longest, I was struggling to find someone to recast for the Happy Medium, but I also feel like Mandy Moore could fill the spot. I like how you use the quote from the book, “She’s very jolly. If I ever saw her looking unhappy, I would be very depressed myself.” because I feel that way towards Mandy Moore. Every movie that she’s in, she brings this positive energy and brightness the mood which Meg would need in the book and movie.

“Mrs. Murry looked up from her letter, almost as though she were looking toward the children, and then her head drooped and she put it down on the paper, and sat there, huddled up, letting herself relax into an unhappiness that she never allowed her children to see.”

To me when reading the illustration of Mrs. Murry it was so contradictory of what the whole book has described her as. Since the beginning of the book, L ‘Engle has basically described her as this “perfect mother” who is beautiful and smart. Now when they’re all with the Happy Medium you see this different side of Mrs. Murry. Meg has always looked up to this mother who has all these wonderful traits and now that she sees another side, it takes away an aspect of Meg’s life perspective.

Reading L ‘Engle’s book after watching the movie you get a better sense of the feelings of the characters in their surroundings. When you’re watching the movie you see that Meg was comforted that Charles Wallace was in the kitchen, but the book goes into more detail of the atmosphere. The book lets the reader in on how Meg feels along with knowing what’s else is going on. But the perk of watching the movie first is that you had an image on what to expect and the book added to that image.

Lost Girls by Jane Yolen pg. 146

I really like that Yolen incorporated details from the original Peter Pan. Peter Pan in J.M. Barrie’s edition could never remember Wendy, Michael or John and now in Lost Girls, Peter can’t remember the different names. But what made Lost Girls different than Peter Pan is that Peter instead of just forgetting, he just named them all Wendy. I wonder if naming them all Wendy is significant to the relationship that he has with her?

After watching Hook, I wanted to go back to the last few chapters to see some of the differences between the two. In Hook, Wendy is introduced as an older woman rather than a young girl. She is rather referred to as a grandmother. But going back to Peter Pan, Wendy is a young girl that later grows up later in the novel. Peter eventually visits Wendy when she is a mother. Peter does not know that she is grown up or a mother until he is told. Rather than in Hook, Peter already knows some of these details. It just interested me that the movie and book had some differences that were both significant to each of the storylines.

“As in the novel, the film displays Lost Boys who are dreadful need of parenting, especially of discipline, but whereas in the book they appear confused and silly, in the film they are wild and aggressive.” - Tarr

Now that Peter is the main character and don’t necessarily need a mother the tone of the lost boys has changed. In the book, the Lost boys had Wendy and had the comfort of knowing that she would care for her. But in “Hook”, Peter was not going to comfort the Lost Boys so in reaction they were rebellious. The change in Lost Boys is because of the change in narrative between the novel and movie.

“The gentleman’s name,” Wendy continued, “was Mr. Darling, and her name was Mrs. Darling.”

“I knew them,” John said, to annoy the others.

“I think I knew them,” said Micheal rather doubtfully.

It was really interesting that Wendy’s story was about her and her sibling’s life before they got to Neverland. Before chapter 11, you saw that Wendy was testing her sibling’s memory about their parents and now the story is about them. Barrie even included that Wendy was using past tense because she wasn’t even for sure. Now that Wendy is telling the story, you can see that she is still trying to hold on to anything that she can remember.
