She held his face in her quivering hands, thumbs caressing his now paling cheeks. She spoke to him with a quivering voice, no, that wasn't right; it was more of a beg. She was begging him, making promises she'd never be able to keep, saying whatever came to mind in hopes that the color would return to his evanescent eyes as fat tears fell from hers.
The lovers last moments branded into the minds of the others. He stayed wrapped in loving arms well into the night, the body no longer radiating warmth. The air felt heavy, thick, almost choking her with each breath she drew. Who was she to greedily take what should going into his lungs? Who was she to stand by and let him sacrifice himself? Who was she-
"Hey..." A friend kneeled besides them, carefully placing a hand on her shoulder to help calm her down. Their mouth opened and closed a few times in hesitation, afraid that they'll say the wrong thing and set her off. "You know how weāre so, so deeply sorry... But we have to start a fire." They stared at down at their friends blank face watching her tears pool in the creases of his face.
She knew it was time. It was already dark, those things were most likely on their way to collect what they deem theirs and there was no way in hell she was going to let them have him. With a low hum of acknowledgment the others started preparing, grabbing logs and sticks to throw in a large pile.
Shaky legs were forced to stand, hooking her arms under his to drag him towards the pile. They watched her struggle at first, crying out in anguish before rushing to grab ahold of his feet.
They stood by the great fire as she cried, constant tears wetting her face as the muscles in her arms strained for relief but still she refused to let go.
She wished they had more time together, somehow in this dreadful new world they managed to find one another. āPleaseā¦ā One of them pleaded, their eyes drifting towards the humanoid screeching in the distance. She glanced towards the flickering flames, to the woods, then finally to her lover, she knew it wasnāt right to make them wait- they had a rule for a reason.
Her lips grazed his forehead for the last time, fingers gripping his rigid body before nodding. She let out a sorrowful cry as they threw him in, embers and black smoke billowing into the night sky. They couldnāt stay and watch him go, they didnāt have time to say their prayers or even grab his ashes. There was never enough.
