every time my mom cries to me about losing her mother, i feel like crying as well.
bcs even though mine's alive i feel like i don't have one either.
it's like were's both mourning a motherly prescence, motherly love.
my mom and i
i too know what it's like to feel small and wanting comfort from a mother but not being able to receive it.
no one to talk to and no shoulder to cry on
my mom and i
we both share the same grief
but she's still my mother at the end of the day
there's layers to this
Quiet dialogue: (be)longing
a collage i made a while ago.
I used still images from a video my mom captured for me in Nigeria.
I like the warm colors, the leaves and trees in general.
It's called 'Quiet dialogue: (be)longing', referring to being a child of the diaspora and everything tied to it: the search for identity, roots, spirituality, connections and ancestors. The title consists of a wordplay.
The word longing represents my search of (cultural) identity and community. It represents a yearning for home.
Belonging on the other hand symbolizes a connection, no matter where i am in the world.
The collage portrays a tree, soil and a yellow house symbolising rootedness and belonging. It represents an internal dialogue abt what i long for and my need to belong ~search of community.
I associate the tree and the soil with my roots and ancestors. my foundation.
The yellow house and the warm colours with the feeling of home and familiarity.
I feel at peace every time i look at this, it reminds me of home. The images speak to me, they bring me solace. and the fact that these were taken in Nigeria also reminds me of home, even though I'm a child of diaspora and I've only been home once when i was 15/16.
Nigeria isn't really my home in a literal sense bcs I wasn't born there and I'm not very connected to my roots because of my parents. but that shouldn't stop me from taking matters into my own hands and learning more about my culture, the languages and reconnecting
with or without their help.
ps ikno it's 'strength' not 'strenght' but it's to late to change it now ...
